Title: Stupidest Quirks?
Post by: Perry on January 28, 2012, 08:46
I was just uploading some pics to Depositphotos. When I was trying to submit an image, I got a red text saying "Please correct errors below: Title - (min length 6 chars)"

What the... My title was 5 characters. I can't understand why there has to be a limit like this, it just doesn't make any sense...?

What other strange "quirks" does other sites have that you would like to get rid of?

Yes... that's a stupid "feature" too, I can't understand the reasoning behind it.

just found a very curious one, if you search a number at PD it will give you many pics actually, per example 5, they look into title not only keywords :D

SS endlessly flagging keywords it thinks are misspelled - scientific names for example - and scolding me about plurals it says are redundant.

PD "can't be a number".

And categories.  Categories are a useless anachronism, and a plague.

Being a new contributor to SS I actually read a few of their FAQ's. The reason behind the singular and plural thing is that their key-wording system is actually quite intelligent, adding plurals itself as well a well known synonyms for keywords. Quite clever, but as they are the only site with this feature, I just ignore all those notes and go through the submit procedure twice (actually got clever and put the first run through without the 2 categories, so that all gets rejected and all get accepted with the second submit).

I get that, but we need the plurals in our IPTC for all the other sites that don't do this.  SS should just silently delete them and not pop up a scold-o-gram every single time.

In my workflow, filenames are very important. Every file has it's own name different from every other file and subsequent versions or revisions of a file keep the original name and merely append to it. I can find the original image almost instantly. Unfortunately, all the microstock houses strip that information out when you upload an image and apply their own file naming convention. Unless I keep my own records when I upload, I cannot tie the file I uploaded back to my own copy. Same for model and property releases. Which one was attached during the upload?

It would be very nice if the microstock houses would keep that information for us but only make it visible to the contributor as part of a 'Contributor's Data' field similar to the description.

I'm only new but I also was wondering what the heck categories are for, as I assume most buyers search using keywords. I can only presume that if you can't fit your image into a category then it's not worthy, which is a fairly good filter from their pov....

Here's one I found funny. I set an image to be deleted on Zoonar, they only delete after 6 months. A day or 2 later I wrote to them asking for it not to be deleted. This particular image is only on Zoonar and not with any of its partners and I informed them of this. They wrote to me and said they are unable to prevent the deletion from happening (from their own site).

i hate hate HATE how fotolia's rejection/acceptance emails only contain the file number... no title? no thumbnail?  COME ON!  How hard could it be??  Instead, I have to dig to find out which photo they are talking about.

I agree categories are useless.  I also keyword for every site including plurals because the other sites don't strip those out.  DT making you upload your additionals after the jpgs why can't they do that at the same time like hello they're named the same but with different extensions.

Oh another one I can't stand is having to make 2 separate jpg files for SS.  1 preview image and 1 large raster.  If they would just combine that it would streamline my upload process a lot.
