New addition next to our avatars - So we can now add to a members reputation? It will all end in tears :D
-
Ha ha... i know :)
:'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
But I am not finished fiddling with it yet :)
I am thinking/testing adding a button to click if you think the post was helpful. You won't be able to say if you don't like the post, only if you like it. People will then have a rating of how many useful posts they have made.
-
test
-
Well that sounds a bit less confrontational. How about a chart ‘The most loved poster’ :)
I see 'Power' has gone already.
-
Nice idea :) I like it
-
i'm not sure if it will work yet, or if it will be usefull but I suppose we will find out for better or worse.
-
It doesn't work well with Opera. Well, most of the clients are Firefox probably... but I'm using Opera.
-
I see the little rating icon but I do not see any button to "click if you think the post was helpful"
I am Mac/Safari.
-
Click the heart and a box appears at the top of the page

How come I don't get one, leaf?
-
You can't see your own.
-
;D
Now all those who hate my statements may vote against me... What a relief for some people ;-)
:o
-
Thanks runamock!

Well this should be interesting! ;D

what about adding one more like "this post is useless" ?
-
Is it useful to point out that "useful" has just one L?
-
You can't see your own.
I see a green blupp on everyone. No heart ??? Firefox

;D

We can vote only if we like it - Not if we hate it. Good for you ;)
-

thanks, my grade 2 spelling challenges are coming back to haunt me.
The heart is moved up beside the 'quote' button
and yes, that is correct, you can only say a post was helpful - not unhelpful. :)
-
I can't see any hearts, just a green button under the avatars.
-
It's moved next to the 'Quote' button
-
You might consider adding a 'Cancel' button next to the 'Submit' one so there's an obvious way of closing the window without leaving a comment or rating. Also, the little green bar might be more visually effective if it ran horizontally with its length correlating to reputation. It might also be interesting to have another bar (maybe a blue one) underneath it showing how many posts the member has made.
-

Me neither. I'm on Safari/Mac.
-
you mean those little green beans along with hearts?
is that what they are? lol, I thought that was geiger counter or something, it kept adding to my name, and I was freaking out thinking I was radioactive or being QA'ed by leaf ! rofl
Phew , thank goodness for letting me know !

Yeah, the cancel button would be a good idea - if I just knew how?!
The green bars will correlate to your rating - the more helpful posts you write, the more little bars you will get.
-
So what browser do we need to have in order to leave feedback?
-
I’m using the same as you, the heart has moved, it’s by the quote button.
This started out with both a ‘Helpful’ and ‘Unhelpful’ button and the heart was by the avatar . Leaf is still ‘fiddling with it.’ You know what those Scandinavians are like :)

I haven't yet seen any heart anywhere. Hmm...
No biggie, I guess. :)
-
I gave my vote to one user and his post, I clicked I agree, and I wrote a comment. But that user still has 0 reputation. So, I tried to do it again for the same post, and I got this message:
An Error Has Occurred!
Please spread the love before giving it to this user again.
-
So you can agree or disagree with a post.
But if you disagree, does that necessarily mean it isn't a helpful post? I think it would make more sense to have a single "Recommended" option, if this is meant to be a rating on helpfulness only. Otherwise, "helpful" or "not helpful" seems preferable to "agree" or "disagree".
And what is the purpose of the comment? Does the poster get to see those?
It seems these are meant to be used rarely. I tried to leave another vote, and got an error message stating "You must wait 0 hours between reputation actions. You have approximately 11 minutes left to wait."
-
I only see a green bar under the avatars. Where do I vote?
I hope this doesn't start a war! ;D
-
I'm pretty sure Leaf's post said that this is only for positive feedback. If you don't have something nice to say, you can't say anything at all. ;)
-
I only see a green bar under the avatars. Where do I vote?
Look to the left of the "Quote" icon, you should see a bluish heart. If you mouse over it, a popup reads "Mark this post as useful". Click the heart, and go from there.

I've tried in Safari, and now in Firefox, and do not see anything except the green bar. I'm on Mac OSX 10.4.11, Safari 3.2.1, and Firefox 3.0.8.

No, you can't disagree with a post. There used to be a 'disagree' option but that was taken away a couple hours ago.
Currently it is set to be able to leave feedback 4x each hour
Yes, you can see your comments in Profile > View Reputation
-
Hmmm.. I just noticed a commonality among those of us who report not seeing the heart. We are all premium members. Maybe there is a permission that needs to be updated?

Yay! I posted a
helpfuluseful post! ;D LOL
Thanks, Leaf! It is working now.

The counting wasn't working earlier, but should be working now.
You have to give 'useful post' feedback to 2 other people before you can give feedback to the same person again... in an effort to try and reduce biased positive voting.
-
No, you can't disagree with a post. There used to be a 'disagree' option but that was taken away a couple hours ago.
It's still shows up for me as an option when I click on the heart.
Aha!
Ok, it is there, but if you try to use it, you get an error:
You are not allowed to give negative reputation to this user!
OTOH, I tried this on you -- maybe there's special code that doesn't allow giving negative reputation to Leaf only. ;D ;D ;D
-

What really? that is strange. Maybe it is a cached browser thing.. hmm.. Anyone else seeing two options?
-
It works fine now with Opera. Clicking again the heart has the effect of a Cancel button. It's cool, well done. ;)
LE: still, work on the messages. I tried to give another vote and it said: "You must wait 0 hours between reputation actions. You have approximately 13 minutes left to wait."
Replace it with something like "You must not wait between reputation actions. Just kidding - you still have to wait 13 minutes".
-

Nope, just one, plus an optional comment field.

Any way to opt out of this? I still have memories of the istock forumeter - that was a spectacular failure.
I am here to get useful information and hopefully share some when I have it. I have absolutely no interest in participating in a popularity contest.

You already have 4 helpful posts. hehe..
Yeah, the words of Kelly and Bruce (from UGCX) keep ringing through my head - saying how the forumeter was one of the worst ideas that was implemented on iStock. I never participated much in the forums there so I don't really know how it worked - but wasn't there a negative aspect to it, where you could eventually vote someone into being a troll? I figured if it was only helpful posts that were credited it would only be a positive experience :) and perhaps encourage people to be helpful.
-

I agree and as much as I appreciate Tyler spending his time trying to make this already informative forum more user friendly I don't really think this particular meter will have any worth. I know of someone on a microstock site forum who is very popular, but he talks the biggest load of cr*p I've ever seen.
-

I just cleared my cache and I tried it again. I still have two options. :-[
OTOH, I just tried it on IE, and not only do I see only the one option, the i/f is entirely different (and much better) -- it's a popup window rather than a separate page.
Obviously I am seeing an older version, but I don't know how to get rid of it beyond clearing the cache! Oh, well, maybe it'll eventually fix itself. :) I'm using FF 3.0.10, in case that helps anyone.
-
Did you try logging out and back in again?

No, but I did now, and it worked! :)
Thanks, whatalife. You definitely deserved a helpful for that one.

I agree with Lisa.

A-ha! Hidden in plain sight! Since it's a heart icon, I was looking for something red instead of blue. :D ;D

Yep, I'd agree too. It'll most likely just encourage sycophantic fawning by some individuals and/or 'forum cliques' to be generated __ if I wanted that I'd be spending time on the SS forums (shudders).
Let's keep this place for the discussion of business.
-
test 123 ;D
-
It is true that the feature will encourage some users to participate more, and that is probably one of the goals of this feature. On the other hand, turning it into a popularity contest, creating "allies" and "enemies" might make it much less useful and might even turn off some people with the forum altogether. This forum has already seen its fair deal of sometime not so professional interaction between the members. Unfortunately, I think we are just not up to the whole thing.
-
Poor leaf, you can't please everybody 8)
-
Now when I am ignored by couple users I can see if anybody actually likes me :-)
-
Come on, Loosen your ties a bit.
Let´s give it a few days before bashing it...
We can give a price for the first one to reach 10000 positive threads ;)
-
OK. I have a couple of suggestions. One is to make the votes public, so that underneath the post we would see how many votes the post has and by whom. Hopefully, this would discourage voting for useless posts :) I have seen this on some forums already, in form of "Thank you" votes.
A thread could also has its number of useful posts displayed on the home page. That would make for a better use of the whole feature.
-
0 usefull in 1350 or something post... What a shame, now I have to post again ::) LOL
-

I don't understand what you mean by this. Isn't the voting for posts that the voter finds useful? Or just the ones that you find useful? :)
-
I'm of the opinion a simple post count indicator is always the most neutral and effective quality indicator for forum members - if someone was being a wiener all the time they probably wouldn't make it to post 3323. I'm sure this mod Leaf added is pretty safe for spamming and stuff.. but at the pace of how ideas progress here I think a power-up heart won't mean as much as hoped for because it requires stopping and evaluating the individual message which might be too much of a distraction to bother for most busy people.
On the other hand, I am always one to support non-intrusive experiments - it absolutely can not do any harm to try out. 8)

What I meant is that this would discourage some "allies" voting for each other's posts regardless of whether they are useful or not. One will think twice before voting for a very short post without any info, for example, because it will look ridiculous.

I guess I don't see why it matters, since voting for someone doesn't taking anything away from anyone else, but at least now I understand what you meant. I think lists of names stuck on individual posts would clutter up the forum a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions and opinions everyone. Either way I will let it stand for a week or two and see how it develops.
I like the idea of being able to see which threads have the most useful posts though. If a thread is found to have many useful posts it is probably a good read, or perhaps there could be an area listing the top 10 useful posts.
Perhaps to reduce the 'competition' or 'popularity contest' factor each persons rating could be hidden for everyone but them. I still think it could be alright for people to be able to see which posts people find helpful, and nice to see your helpful post count go up if you work hard at answering people questions.
Otherwise, I am not sure that clicking on the heart, or the benefits of reaching a certain number of helpful posts is rewarding enough for people to do it without reason... but we shall see. I am open to opinion.

I inserted two quotes above which make sense .
The dread of popularity mongers and mobsters is rather silly , as zymmetrical points out, I can't see anyone taking the time to "vote" for you simply because he/she thinks you're a cool jerk or to quote zymmetrical "weiner". If so, it sure takes a bigger "weiner" to want to vote for such a jerk / weiner.
Furthermore, I can't see how anyone enjoys being told he is the most popular "pr##k" (censored deliberately derogatory) in this forum.
lol, can you imagine the obituary for this poor ole sod, the only one good thing said about him , "here lies.. xxxxxxx, voted most popular PR##K in Microstockgroup forum."
-
Ah, now I see it. I wasn't seeing it at work, also using FF.

Darn ;) Not for you and not on this thread, here's what comes up.
You are not allowed to give negative reputation to this user!
Too bad, there should be a "This post is BS box." Oh wait, maybe I'd get too many of those. Nevermind. ;D

Is this tan510jomast or tan510jomast (last week) with another new account? Or someone else? ??? What happened to the full name?
Did someone steal your name or something? And what's with all the posts that read "." or ".." and nothing else?
Something strange is going on here.

Since at the time you wrote this, you had only made one post since the implementation of this, and that one post was in the Cutcaster forum, I'm not sure how much feedback you'd expected to receive on that one post. :) I don't think people are going back to previous threads and reading them again just so they can vote for people.
Are they??

I could care less if I had a hundred or zero. The point is that it is a matter of numbers and some members will post on everything all day log to get big numbers and join with agroup of friends to vote on each other. = Popularity contest and i am not interested in this feature at all.
My 2 cents.

Well, Leaf has avoided some of the really lousy parts that were present in the Forometer. The green squares are showing up on account of something measurable, and not a secret algorithm. (The Forometer developer explained the algorithm that ran it to me once and I had a mild stroke.) And you aren't going to see people running into 'reputation deficits' and getting yellow and red squares (at least it looks that way). That was the thing about the Forometer that alienated people the most. Man, I get the cold shakes just thinking back to it...
-
I not sure about this, I like this site becuase it is about the free exchange of ideas as well a great place to get information and help. When you start ranking people it may diminish the value of that exchange.
-
why is there a 13 minute timer between when you can click the heart? I got to this topic late and read several good post and tried to test out the system.

I think he said in an earlier post that he implemented a 4 votes per hour limit, and that you can't use all those votes on the same person. (I'm sure you can look back and find it.)
