iStockPhoto.com / Re: D-Day (Deactivation Day) on Istock - Feb 2
« on: February 01, 2013, 13:26 »
Sorry, but I couldn't wait! Over the last two days I deleted 10% of my Photo portfolio. I also tossed in my crown for video. I am prepared to go further if Feb 2nd does not produce a positive result and if sales continue the decline.

I will deactivate 10% of my portfolio which is 200 images to help communicate the message. If that doesn't lead to a change at Getty I will delete the remaining 90%. I think this is a vitally important and I urge everyone to participate in whole or part.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: Nikon d 600, any experience?
« on: January 02, 2013, 06:52 »
I have both a D600 and D800. I prefer the D800 and find the image quality fantastic. I have also shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and the Nikon D700 both of which I traded in for the new Nikons. Nothing to wait for in my opinion as they are both fine cameras and the image quality in great. The D800 gives me more pixels to crop.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: So who's going to miss their RC targets?
« on: November 28, 2012, 10:53 »
I am going to fall short by 3,000 RC and fall back from 35% to 30%. Sales have been a disaster in-spite of uploading new content.  :'( ... Sheldon

iStockPhoto.com / Re: IS, exclusives! hows it going, really?
« on: August 03, 2012, 14:09 »
iStock really sucks and downloads and revenues are plunging. I am a diamond exclusive that is very depressed!

Shutterstock.com / Re: Anyone doubting the power of SS?
« on: December 11, 2011, 16:51 »
Yes, I am including iStock's portion of the revenue in my $250,000. My share is $86,000+ and iStock's is about $170,000. These numbers are as an exclusive. I am not a big fan of iStock but I think they will figure things out in time and get back on track. Their overall stats are sinking and they can't afford to leave things as there currently exist. 2012 should be an interesting year.

Yep, I doubt SS! I have 35,000+ downloads on iStock and have generated more than $250,000 in revenue. Thought I would try SS in January so I submitted 10 accepted and very sell-able images from my iStock portfolio. They were all rejected. I have no further interest in SS. To be successful with a new agency you need to upload 1,000+ images as fast as possible. SS has become so selective that it doesn't seem like an achievable goal therefore I give up.

And it is absolutely amazing that there has been no major management shakeup at iStock. Someone is asleep there as the business sinks.

« on: November 04, 2011, 11:02 »
If you compare the stats for iStock and Shutterstock on Alexa.com, I think the results speak for themselves. iStock has lost a huge amount of traffic and Shutterstock seems to have been the recipient of iStocks loss. The stats show iStock and Shutterstock traffic to be equal. A year ago iStock had a huge lead. I think it is very telling.

Worst month of the year for me with September down 25% from last year. I can't justify the time or energy to remain at IS. I  need to give up exclusivity and move my portfolio elsewhere.

Alexa.com shows iStock going down but ShutterStock going up. Not sure which stats are correct.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: No crisis du jour at istockphoto?
« on: April 27, 2011, 13:01 »
April historically is my second best month of the year. This April is my worst month in two years. Sales and politics have become so bad at iStock I can no longer justify uploading. I am going to give another month or two and drop my crown if the trend doesn't change. Btw, I uploaded 300 new files in the last three months with no positive impact on sales.

I can only speak for myself ... I was a buyer at iStock (a small one) and I bailed and won't come back. At some point you have to stand up and say enough is enough.

I do think they are gaming the best match system to maximize their revenue. This diamond took a 39% drop in revenue from March 2011.

I have 165 Editorial images on iStock for the last 3 or 4 weeks. So far, the sales are not worth the effort.

iStockPhoto.com / Re: Any point in uploading?
« on: March 18, 2011, 00:47 »
Sales have fallen off a cliff, new RF files get lost and don't sell, Editorial (165 images) aren't selling so I personally see little to no value uploading to iStock. The growth they promised was a joke and the site is a disaster. I feel Getty owned content is getting preferential search position putting the rest of us at a disadvantage. After 5 years with iStock and achieving Diamond level, I am ready to throw in the towel. There is no future at iStock!

This appears to be a workaround Istock implemented to discourage fraudulent buying.  Of course, it also discourages legitimate buying.  Here's another happy customer  ::)

It's been a very frustrating 2 days for me. I finally figured out what the 404 error is for buying stock. They are allowing you to buy/download one photo every 5 minutes. I saved everything I needed to a lightbox and then sat at my computer for 3 hours to download the 40 pix I needed today. Download one, start timer, wait 5 minutes, download the next, start timer, wait 5 minutes. For 3 hours. If you try to download faster than one per 5 minutes, you get the 404 error. I stumbled upon the "workaround" by accident after pulling my hair out for 2 days.

Yep, this is called "Sales Prevention!"; Imagine how XMAS shopping would have been if you could only pay for a gift every 5 or 10 minutes! XMAS would have lasted a whole month!

What we are experiencing at iStock is incompetence and gross mismanagement. As CEO of a technology company, the Board would fire my as* in a heart beat if I ran the business and produced a website with the magnitude of problems and lack of testing and Q/C we are experiencing. On top of all the issues they close the shop and take a vacation. This is either total incompetence or just plain arrogance. I don't see a long term future with iStock.

Think about other arrogant companies from the past ... Novell, IBM with the PC, Lotus, WordPerfect, ... and the list goes on and on! Where are they today and will iStock join the list?

Are there any lawyers in the group? Might there be a possibility of a "Class Action Lawsuit"? I say that because, although the iStock contract gives them control, officers (Kelly) of the company have posted promises in the forums that were misleading and outright lies. This could be a legal cause of action. You can't make promises and statements knowing you can't keep them and cause people financial harm.
