Canva / Trolley (Canva)
« on: March 06, 2024, 12:50 »

Quote from the Canva e-mailing of 30 November 2023 :

"Starting December 1, 2023, we will be asking you to register with our new payout provider Trolley by March 31, 2024. In order to receive your payouts after Mar 31, 2024, you will be required to both be registered with the new payout provider and to have completed the requisite tax forms. The tax forms are US W-8 (non-US Resident) or W-9 (US Resident) forms, and are needed in order to properly identify you and calculate correct taxes with the US government.
If you have not registered with Trolley and completed the tax forms by Mar 31, 2024 we will be unable to process your payouts. "

So March 31 is approaching, and (I suppose) we all completed the tax forms, but did any one register with Trolley?   I had a look on their website, and there is no such thing as a free registration. You're supposed to go for a paid subscription.
Or did Canva just use the wrong wording in their e-mail and we're not supposed to register on the Trolley website at all ?

"On October 1st, we will start paying for template "usages" instead of "exports".
This improvement means you earn royalties each time your design is downloaded, printed OR presented."

I've read this 20 times now, and I still have no idea what it means ...

OK, I'm sure you will tell me this has been in the MR for months/years, but I only noticed today ...
It's been a while since I needed a MR, so I thought I had better adjust mine and make it closer to the 2023 Shutterstock release.

Must say I was unpleasantly surprised to read this :
I (the Model) hereby grant to the Contributor and Shutterstock Inc. (collectively "the Contributor") the right to ....  (bla bla) ...
and in the next paragraph :
I hereby agree that all rights in and to the Content, including the copyright, are and shall remain the sole property of the Contributor ....

What ? ??

Of course, there is no problem for myself, as I always make a "generic" model release, NOT mentioning Shutterstock or any other Agency, but are there really photographers that simply copy this text ?

Bigstock.com / Message from Bigstock - why?
« on: April 05, 2023, 08:09 »
Now WHY on earth do I get the e-mail message below?  They are my lowest earner (3 to 5 eur/month) and I have only 54 EUR  waiting there ...
Is this their subtle way of telling me the end of BS is getting closer?  Anyone else got this mail?

Did you know you are leaving money behind in your Bigstock account? Cash in this Spring by taking a moment to collect the money your creative work has earned you!
Here are the steps you need to take:
Complete a Tax form: To receive payments, all contributors must have an approved tax form on file. If you dont have one on file already, read how to submit a new tax form in a few easy steps here.
Request a payment: On the main page under 'Commissions' in your account, you will see the 'Payment Preferences' area. Select (or edit) the payment email address for electronic payments to be sent to an existing verified PayPal or MoneyBookers/Skrill account by clicking on the button next to your choice. Then, simply click the 'Request Commissions' button and your request will be sent to us.
Contact our support team if you have any questions and well be glad to assist you!
Thank you,
The Bigstock team

Bigstock.com / Bigstock Bridge is closed ...
« on: October 22, 2022, 10:08 »
As Bigstock hardly sells anything for me, it took a few months before I noticed my portfolio at BS was not increasing anymore (while I was still uploading to SS).
A short e-mail to Bigstock and I got a (surprisingly fast) reply :

"Thanks for reaching out to Bigstock Contributor Care. We truly appreciate your contributions to our collections during all these years! Unfortunately, they have reported that the Bridge Program between Shutterstock and Bigstock is closed; it will remain that way until further notice. If you like to submit the same content you have approved from one platform to the other, it will not be marked as a duplicate, however, you will have to do it manually. "

Must say I cannot feel happy or sad about this, but just in case you wondered, it's not a bug, the "bridge" is closed.
And no, I have no plans to start uploading manually.  Not for 9 dollars per month.

6
My average per month of Royalties lies between 150 and 250 $ ... today I find ... 0,21 dollars royalties as "my share".
Put that into a percentage, I get about 99,84% down ...
I would believe something like 10 or 20% down, but going from 150 to zero ?
So this must be a mistake OR Canva did not sell anything last month, at all ?
(by the way, my individual sales went "up" from 5 to 8 dollars from July to August, so there was no reason to expect this)

General Stock Discussion / Removing brands in city scapes
« on: May 24, 2022, 11:14 »
When I shoot images of a big port, with the cargo of the ships (= lots of containers) in view, I painstakingly remove every ship name and every logo/brandname from the containers.  That is such a boring job that I don't have many "industrial" images in my portfolio.  But yesterday I was browsing the Adobe library and I found lots of images of big ports, flooded with brand names.  Like hundreds of containers with the MSC logo on it.  And yes, these were commercial licenses, not editorial.
Did I miss something?  OK, these logos are small, because it's hundreds of containers in 1 image, but still, it is possible to read the logos as they are not blurred at all.
So what do you do with your industrial photos full of small logos?  Just NOT shoot them, spend HOURS/DAYS removing logos, or just submit as they are and keep your fingers crossed?

Dreamstime is "cleaning up" their database again.  This time I got two rejected images that were submitted many years ago (which is not a new thing at Dreamstime, I know).
What is new is the reason :
Both images show the most innocent mother's day scenes, shot during different photo sessions, of a 5-year old girl giving flowers to her own mother and kissing her mother.

No, there is not even a HINT in the direction of lesbian kissing or pedofile behaviour AT ALL.
Oh, and both people in the pictures are fully dressed.

What the h...??
Are they doing a AI search on the word "kissing + child" ???  And since when is kissing inappropriate?

Dreamstime explanation :
We are sorry to inform you that due to changes in Internet regulations, we can no longer keep online certain types of images that can be considered inappropriate or that can be open to interpretation.
Unfortunately, your image fits one of these categories and had to be removed. As this is a time sensitive matter, the thumbnail has also been removed and is no longer available.
Thank you for your understanding.

General Stock Discussion / Etsy petition - NOT signing this!
« on: November 15, 2021, 11:50 »
I am a small seller on Etsy (selling my own digital backgrounds for baby photographers) ...  I just got the e-mail message below from Etsy, urging me to sign their petition against the new EU rules ...
I am sooooo NOT signing this petition!

Defend the rights of European small business owners

You may be aware that the European Commission has proposed legislation called the Digital Services Act (DSA).
The DSA includes new rules for how digital platforms like Etsy operate. As part of our ongoing commitment to running a safe and fair marketplace, weve been working with EU policymakers as the DSA is being drafted and negotiated.

Unfortunately, some members of the European Parliament have recently proposed additional rules for the DSA that threaten to harm our marketplace and sellers businesses. Some of these new rules would result in:

A slower, more bureaucratic process for creating a new shop or updating your account information. Marketplaces would have to verify that all information provided by the seller is correct before allowing them to sell, and also verify any future changes.
Your listings are more likely to be blocked or removed. Because the new rules would hold marketplaces strictly liable for items sold on their platforms, theres a greater chance that legitimate listings might be removed. This would also divert marketplace resources away from where theyre actually neededfighting bad actors trying to harm consumers.
Less choice for sellers and consumers would also result from the proposed rules, as many sellers are likely to be discouraged from the increased complexity of selling online. For example, marketplaces like Etsy would have to check every listing for full compliance with labelling and certification requirements before the listing could even be posted.

Etsy's CEO, Josh Silverman, has been speaking up against these unnecessary and misguided rules with EU policymakers because he knows they would harm the creative business of every seller who wishes to sell online in Europe. But the reality is lawmakers wont protect small business owners unless they hear from youtheir constituentsdirectly.

Will you join us in urging EU policymakers to stop adding these harmful burdens on small businesses like yours?

General Stock Discussion / Sensitive use complaint
« on: March 08, 2021, 10:04 »
Let me try to keep this short :
10 years ago, a 19y old woman posed in my studio, signed a MR and got all prints and digitals.
2 images were (not nude) closeups of her with tears on her cheeks.
Today, her family is mad at her because those crying photos are found in articles about abuse or other sad situations.
She wants the photos removed, but obviously, this is out of my hands.  I can remove them from Shutterstock, but not the photos in use.
Now before you all start telling me to get a lawyer :  THIS IS BELGIUM.  We do NOT go to court, we do not sue eachother, so I don't expect letters from her lawyers.
My question is :  what could I do to make her (or her family) happy?   I don't want to give her money, because I'm sure she'll keep knocking on my door for the next 10 years.  I COULD delete the images on SS etc., but that would not stop the publications that are already out there.
What else?
This is one of the images :

Shutterstock.com / Attacked because of a keyword - what can he do?
« on: February 17, 2021, 04:46 »
I woke up this morning with a facebook message about a Shutterstock batch of mine.  The series is of a black woman with african braided hair, which I call "afro hair" in the description of the images (because the model called it that way).  She is doing her hair looking into a mirror, so I cannot just ignore her hair in the description.
These images had reasonably good sales for 3 years already, and now I get this message on facebook :

  • Please change your labeling of your photography on shutter stock as it is it is not even kinda racist.  You referring to a woman of color as having a afro hairstyle is completely disgusting. I spend hours looking for photos. and can't find them because of your complete race base labeling. I am attempting to convey the problem without anger.but there is not excuse. your whole photo shoot has not one afro. and to refer any women of color as default having an afro is completely racist. there is no way its a mislabel because afros are a thing specifically. thats the equivalent of me calling you from Belgium an asian.  for your benefit please update this soon it will support your pocket and creative directors looking through hours of shittly named photos.  I will check in on your progress in a few days before reaching out to shutterstock direct.

The message is from a person in North Carolina, and he obviously knows I'm not American.
I'm not asking how to reply - I already replied that I don't understand his point, because to me, to the model and to my Ghanese friends, this hairdo is called an afro hairstyle.
My reply was very friendly and polite, as I don't want somebody to get nasty on my FB business page or anywhere else.

But I do have 2 questions :

To the American Microstockers :  is calling this an "afro hairstyle" offending??  Here in Belgium, even between black people, it is not, but maybe in American culture it is ???
To all :  if he contacts Shutterstock about it, what do you expect their reaction would be?  Do nothing?  Delete the images?  Tell me to change the wording?  ??

I have a Canon 5D IV.  It has dual card slots, and before every photo session, I format both cards.
After last Maternity session, my Sandisk 64Gb failed, but no panic, I just took the CF card and copied all photos to my hard disk.

No problem ... but what if I did NOT have two cards - it would have been quite a panic.
So I thought : let's take the defective card and act as if I really needed to recover the photos.
Mind you, I do not even know if the photos were recorded on this card, because possibly it got defective right after formatting.

I googled on "recovery software", found "Recuva", did a "deep scan" ... and :  nothing!  Though the reviews said it could recover photos even after formatting (so in theory, it should at leastt find the photos of the PREVIOUS photo session).

Interesting note :  this is the very reason why I won't be buying the EOS R or any other great new camera with only 1 slot!

I'm keeping this card, just for testing.  Did any of you ever recover photos with a defective card, without going to a professional recovery company?  If so, which software did the trick?

123RF / 403 error code - how do I contact 123rf ?
« on: November 28, 2019, 02:30 »
Hi all, since this morning I get a 403 error page whenever I try to access the 123rf website (any page).  It's on my desktop PC and my laptop, and it seems to be me, not a worldwide problem.  So can anyone give me the e-mail address to contact support?  Not a web-address, as I won't be able to use it ...   thanks in advance!

In order to do this, we need your help please take a moment to confirm and verify your identity with us.
The deadline to verify your account is August 26th.

My name is spelled correctly, which makes it look real, but the sender is :   [email protected] = looks like phishing

Any one else got this mail?  Can any one from Pond5 tell me if this comes from them or not?  I'm not going to click that "VERIFY YOUR ACCOUNT" button without knowing for sure.

123RF / Earnings page temporarily unavailable???
« on: March 04, 2015, 01:49 »
"This page is temporarily unavailable. Sorry for any inconvenience caused. "

Since last week, this is what I get 90% of the time when I try to access my earnings page.  All other pages work fine.  Logging out/in and deleting cookies does not help at all.  Any one else with this problem?  Any solution?  If not, I guess I'll have to send a ticket to support ...

General Stock Discussion / Does the IRS send e-mails ?
« on: November 19, 2014, 17:10 »
I am from Belgium, so I only know the IRS from the tax forms for Shutterstock etc.

I just got an e-mail going like this :

Application for a not ordinary resident (non-resident) saver to receive interest without tax taken off or deducted.

ATTN ;

Our records indicate that you are a non-resident alien. What you need to do
Print out the attached notification and complete the attached W-8BEN FORM and Fax same along with a copy of your international passport to fax number on the form within 7 working days.

[/color]
Is this real?
First of all I would think they already have several W-8BEN forms of me, through Shutterstock and other agencies.
Then why this e-mail ?  Phishing?

Any US citizens who can tell me if the IRS sends e-mails?  I never get one from Belgian taxes  ;D

General Stock Discussion / Resubmitting ... allowed? worth while?
« on: February 16, 2014, 02:12 »
Hi, I usually do not resubmit anything, except on SS with corrected flaws + a notice to the reviewer, but sometimes I get cranky when I see how many well-selling files there are in the "refused" folder of the other agencies.

Does any of you have experience in resubmitting to FT/DST/123rf/GLO/DP/CAN ... ?  Do they allow it, and if yes, should we draw their attention to the fact that it's a second time, or to the first refusal-reason?

For SS I know that resubmitting is only allowed if you "announce" it, and you're supposed to correct the file first, not just resubmit it, but what about the others?  Has any one ever had a problem with it ?

General Midstock / News from Rodeo
« on: January 17, 2014, 14:38 »
Today I received a reply from Juha Tuomi.  I had written about the fact that my last payment was for November 2012, and today I got a reply, plus payment for December 2012 and the first months of 2013.

Juha gave me permission to quote his e-mail on this forum :

Hello Anyka

Sorry for taking a looong time to answer. I spend my annual vacation at this time since summer goes busy with photographing around and at xmas time it is usually very quiet two 2-3 weeks. Unluckily we had and still have technical problems with our automated invoicing system with almost a month now. Not helping the situation that Im so disappointed to our finnish ICT and Accounting companies which all our invoicing goes through. It is sometimes disaster to make something too automated and abandon manual work as we have just had to wait and send emails and call what is happening. There is a lot of holidays going at xmas time in Finland so it wasnt surprise that delays occur.

To the fact that we are very late with our payments is due to dropping sales during the whole year 2013, second year in a row and at the same time rising credit losses which we have taken to pay from our own share for the last 10 years but we have to change that. From now on if client doesnt pay the bill despite the work of collectin agency we have to depit those from the commission. We think that is fair for both of us, which of course isnt the nice side of business. Luckily trend is that more and more companies use direct online payment since we dont give directly invoicing access because of that rising trend of credit losses and bad economy here in Finland.

We are starting payments asap we get invoicing flowing and have to start with small amounts and advance from there. We made a significant arrangement last year to minimize costs and have started to make more client assignments ourselves. Sorry that it will affect to answer rate and service quality to photographers/artists as we try to maintain top notch service for the buying customers.

I really hope that we havent lost your trust to us as a company and as a colleague photographers. It is always been important to us that even some years delays have occurred we have always paid everything in the end for over 11 years now.

I wish you a very good year 2014 in business and personal life! :)
All the best,
Juha

Though the dropping sales figures are bad news of course, both the e-mail and partial payment did reassure me.

General Midstock / Will Rodeo ever pay us ?
« on: December 20, 2013, 10:39 »
I often read topics about slow payment, and then "slow" means 2 to 3 weeks.

If 2 or 3 weeks is slow, what about 1 year ?

When was your last Rodeo pay-out?  I had one on 23 November 2012 (payment up till Oct12), and when I complained in May 2013, they sent me payment for November 2012, so by the end of this month, Rodeo will owe me 12 months royalties (which happens to be more than 800 dollars).
Also in May, Rodeo let me know that sales had gone down significantly (I already knew that!) and I should not expect any payments until November.  Well, November has gone now ...

A couple of weeks ago I sent another enquiry, but I have not had any reply yet (or payment).

From other Rodeo contributors I heard that I'm not alone.  So here's my question :  how many Rodeo contributors are there on MicroStockGroup?  When was your last pay-out and have you contacted Rodeo about it?

20
I was just playing with my sales spreadsheet and made a list of "last BME" per agency :

IS :  Nov 2009

RODEO :  sep 2010
DST :  nov 2011
FT :  nov 2011
GLO :  feb 2012
CAN :  apr 2012
SS :  oct 2012
BIG :  oct 2012
132RF :  feb 2013
DP :  may 2013
POND5 :  july 2013

Pond5 (Oct/10) and DP (Jan/12) are the last ones I joined, so it's not surprising they have a good score, but I think the other dates really give a realistic view on how these sites are doing (for me).
123rf has been constantly growing for years .  SS has been growing continuously, until this year when it stopped.  Istock has been a complete disaster since 2010.  DST and FT were excellent until end 2011 and are still good, but without any super-great months.

This is a completely useless analysis, so feel free to ignore it!   ;D

GLStock / Error page requesting Payout at GLO?
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:10 »
Hi, just checking if anyone else has this problem :
On my Dashboard at Graphic Leftovers, there's a "request payout" button (top right).
Whenever I click on that button, I get an error page saying "Page not found - Please try another page".
Well, I don't WANT to try another page, I just want my money   ;D
After a few weeks hoping they would fix this, I contacted support, and they replied that I should give them my password, so that they could do the requesting for me.
????  Does this mean I'm the only one with this problem?  If it were a general bug, I'd think they would try to fix the bug instead of offering to send the request for me?

iStockPhoto.com / What would you have done if Getty had asked us ?
« on: February 02, 2013, 10:33 »
This morning, while I was deactivating, I noticed how many good stock images had no downloads at all.  I already knew that of course, but I noticed it again.
I'm sure we all have files like that.  They are good stock material, but just had bad luck :  accepted during the weekend, or just not sold the first week and then they disappear into the black depths of Best Match.
Some of these files even have bad luck on all agencies (one of my favorite vintage photos has never EVER sold  :( ).
Now suppose Istock/Getty had told us - in August - about the Getty/Google deal.  Suppose they had asked 1 image per contributor, and we would be paid 12$ + no stripping of metadata.  Would you have submitted a good file, one of the non-sellers, but still good stock?  I would (I think).
The difference is huge of course :  no deceiving, no bestsellers, no stripping of metadata, and the choice would've been ours, not the Google-drive-users.  And only 1 file per contributor "opted in".

Veer / Is Veer safe?
« on: January 26, 2013, 03:29 »
Many of the IS-deactivators will probably be looking for another agency to compensate lost sales.  On another thread, several MSG'ers recommended Veer.

I have just been accepted at Veer, but am still hesitating - should I really start uploading there?

Looking at the various threads on the MSG-Veer-forum, I read about issues that are not very encouraging:
- the Alamy trouble
- slow reviews and upload limits
- keywording issues
- no opt-out of PP
- and worst of all :  very bad communication with contributors

I'd be grateful if some of the experienced Veer-users could update the newcomers :

Has the Alamy issue been solved completely?  I am on Alamy and would really be annoyed if my Veer stuff would go to Alamy.

Is deleting an image only possible by contacting support, and is contacting support really such a PITA ?

Yesterday when I visited my DST page, I got a page telling me to type in my old password and choose a new one.  My password-vault software had already typed in the old one, but I got suspicious and logged out, logged in again and then changed my password.
This morning, I got the same situation again :  no problem logging in (with the new pw), but then a page asking to change my password again, which I ignored.
Then I noticed the info in the top right corner had disappeared (usually $ sales of the month, total sales all times, and number of images).  I can still find this in my management area, so to be on the safe side, I requested payment, which worked fine.

Anyone else has had this experience?  Hope it's a bug and not someone trying to hack my account ...
(for your info :  all my passwords on all accounts are different)

25
This week I had great news :  the oldest city in Belgium gave me permission to shoot in one of their medieval churches in December.  And with "medieval" I really mean medieval - it's 700 years old!  This church has been deconsecrated lately (I had to use a dictionary for that word!), but the altar, confessional and pulpit are still there.
Anyway, I want to do a shoot with models there, but since it is such a beautiful church, I want the church to be fully visible in the photos, as a well lit background.
Wedding shooters would of course say :  shoot wide open and cranck up your ISO, but we stock shooters know that is out of the question.  I 'd get refusals for "out of focus" and "noise".
So the only thing I can do is add lots of light.  The church has good electricity, so I can bring my 5 Elinchrom strobes and 2 Quadras, I could even rent more stuff.
My main problem is :  how can I get the most light out of my studio strobes, into the (dark) arches and side chapels?  And what light modifiers would be the best choice for such a great building?
Any one with (lots of) experience in lighting larger spaces with very high ceilings?
