Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a new zoom lens for my Canon. In particular, something that is easy to walk around with and versatile with its ranges. I love my 70-200 IS 2.8 but it's not something I enjoy carrying around on vacation, and I want a wider angle anyhow.

The lens has to produce images sharp enough for stock. Suggestions welcome!   :D

Start by telling us what Canon camera body you have? Is it full-frame or cropped?

I carry with me these lenses: 16-35, 24-105, 100-400, 17 T-S, 50 1.4.
Most of the time I use 24-105 because of the range and it is sharp enough for 5D Mk II and 6D.

Depends on the camera.

I have a 5DMII. I had a 24-105mm and it was decent but I now have a 24-70mm which I like better and is a nice compliment to the 70-200mm.  I've read reviews on the 28-300mm and it's supposed to be sharp overall but it looks like a beast for weight and size. Canon really could use a more compact 28-300mm for general usage like Nikon's.

If you have a crop camera then maybe an 18-200mm. I think some of the independent lens makers are offering 18-250mm or 18-300mm's too.

A Canon zoom lens that is easy to walk around? Is there such a beast?

Here is a good article Dan for you to look over-

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I shoot with the original 5D, and the 1D-Mark II. Undecided if I want to go with the 5D Mark III next year or a newer model 1D. So Full Frame all the way for me.

Well there are different levels of nuisance. I've tried walking around with the 70-200, but it's just too heavy after a few hours. Plus I like to look slightly discreet when out with my family, rather than like I am Joe Pro Photographer.

Well, then your options are probably 24-70 or 24-105. I've had both and either are fine for the 5D line and shooting stock. If you already have the excellent 70-200 I'd say go with the 24-70.

I have the 5D mkIII and I use the 24 - 105 f4 most of the time. I do carry a wider lens and a 70-200 f4, but this all purpose lens is the one I use for probably 70% of my images

Are you a Canon-only type of guy? If not, I love my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8.

Just to say, the 70-200 f/4 is one heck of a nice little lens, fine hand held, light weight. (see below) As sharp and good as the 2.8 I have one with no IS. Except for the color, it's got the range and quality. My usual on camera lens is a 24-105.

Problem is, elvinstar, you want wider and still tele, quality and small, which is kind of a double contradiction. Like looking for a compact car that will seat six comfortably, and do 0-60 in 8 seconds and gets over 40MPG.  :) Doesn't happen due to physical restraints.

I have a Canon 35-350 which is a "super zoom" no longer made. I had two until last month, in case the one went bad. Discontinued about nine years ago. Clunky zoom mechanism, nice photos, great range.

Finally decided if I had to replace it, I was going to the 28-300 IS-USM which is modern better construction (2004). You want the one lens that does it all, high quality? Canon 28-300 f/3.5. But it's not small or light.

I have the 5D mkIII and I use the 24 - 105 f4 most of the time. I do carry a wider lens and a 70-200 f4, but this all purpose lens is the one I use for probably 70% of my images

I find the 5D2 attracts attention everywhere, even with a relatively short lens. Maybe because I'm a 'woman of a certain age' and would be 'expected' (by most of the general public) to have one of these credit-card sized cameras. Or maybe the camera would always attract attention.

I think it's the lens more than anything. When I had my 70-200mm on I actually had a guy walk up to me and ask if I was Paparazzi. It's a big screaming white lens that you can't miss. With a regular lens nobody seems to care. But that's me. Maybe it depends on the person and area.

But it brings up a good point. Dan, you may want to consider something like an EOS M for travel.  Plus Canon seems to be having a fire sale on them right now for $299 including a 22mm f/2 lens.

[OT]  According to the Urban Dictionary: "...Things which define women of a certain age are: exceptionally gaudy clothing, homeopathy and aromatherapy, sensible haircuts, books on feminism, affairs with paper boys, and coffee mornings."

Well, possibly one out of seven.

Yeah - but I did walk into the "pit" area of a boat race competition with one a few years back because the cops/security just assumed I was some papparazi involved in the event.

I too have the 70-200 f/4 NON-IS and I like it a lot. It's much easier to carry around than the f/2.8. My other main lens is the 24-105 f/4.

95% of my shooting is with those two lenses. I occasionally borrow my friend's 16-35mm zoom or 100mm Macro which he rarely uses. I also rent the more exotic stuff like a 24mm tilt-shift or 400mm tele when I have a specific need.

Why don't you rent the lens you're considering so you can try it out before you you buy one? You can also find some very nice glass on the used market.
