I have $25 a month automatically deducted from my account to the Red Cross.
When I lived in Florida and lost my home, business and most everything to Hurricane Charlie, the Red Cross was the ONLY agency that helped my family through EVERYTHING. A few others helped a little here or a little there, but almost as soon as the cameras from the major media were gone, so were they.
My wife (now ex), mother, father and uncle all huddled together in what was left of my house for two months (6 weeks without power) until our insurance company FINALLY came through with a check. This was before Katrina and FEMA was totally useless.
The Red Cross came to our house EVERY SINGLE DAY to provide hot meals, ice and water. They helped us gather up our laundry and they shipped it to Georgia where it was cleaned and shipped back. They helped us to get a small generator to run a small air conditioner, our refrigerator and a microwave.
I also lost my rental house in a flood in California back in 1995 and again, the Red Cross was the only agency that helped me.
I am forever indebted to them and that's why I donate to them as often as I can afford it.
