Title: DeepMeta v3 Coming soon...
Post by: JetCityImage on January 18, 2017, 11:50
On Feb 1st, all current 2.x versions of DeepMeta will loose the ability to fetch data from the iStock servers and uploads will no longer be possible.

The new DeepMeta v3.0 will be available for download, starting Feb 1st, this version will communicate with new servers hosted by Getty, using a completely new API (interface used by computers to talk to servers).

After installing DeepMeta 3, you can still run the old DeepMeta v2.x version to check the (old) statistics already fetched in DeepMeta. You can also choose to uninstall the old version if you prefer.

DeepMeta 3 will allow you to manage and upload the following types: Images, Illustrations (raster & vector), Video and Editorial Images.
IMPORTANT: Your current data in DeepMeta will not be transferred to DeepMeta 3, which will start up empty! Until Feb 1st, you are advised to limit the number of non-uploaded files in DeepMeta to a minimum!

In the weeks following the launch of Feb 1st, I will be adding an import tool to DeepMeta 3, allowing to import selected data from the old version, including non-uploaded files. Note however, that the new keyword vocabulary will be different, so your term-selections for keywords will not be imported.

At least DM is staying up to date with things. Franky is a good man.

Wonder if the new version will still require all the annoying keyword subcategory tick boxes. I really hope not.  Sunny - sun, sunlit effect or sonny the entertainer. Incredible time consuming waste of time.

Can I download metadata from iStock video contributor account with the new Deepmeta on Mac and edit it? I can't find that option. I only see option to upload new photos.

Deep meta do an amazing job considering what they have to link with!

The CV is an amazing saver of time. In Alamy I have to type in all the options, including stemming, manually.  When a CV is working properly it's a far preferable option, ticking boxes being far faster than typing words out in  full.

Finally managed to log in and download deepmeta 3.0. I'm watching the tutorial and to be quite honest, I don't like the new version at all. The old one was much more intuitive and easy to use but I guess he had to cripple the program to accommodate ESP. I wonder how much money they wasted on all this? Guess that explains the latest round of paycuts for everyone...

The trouble with CVs is unless a lot of resource is thrown at them they rapidly become out of date and they have to be managed well....not IS strong suit

I agree, which is why I qualified if a CV is working properly.
In this case, I don't blame Team Metadata, I think it's more of a tech issue.
Still, it's been a nightmare for at least a full year now. I have words which I  requested last Feb which haven't been added, so the files are totally unfindable under their most likely keyword.
What with that and commissions now 'as low as 28c' (I've already had much lower from Getty sales), it's no wonder I'm not uploading.

You're probably mostly referring to the way Batches are handled?
I must admit I've been struggling with this. The ESP site is 100% focused around batches: it's your starting and endpoint. This makes sense for ESP, being an upload portal.

With DeepMeta, I don't want to lose the "portfolio management" part. I know there's very little (if any) management left in V3 at this point, but to me, V3 a new starting point, and I'm determined to go beyond what DM 2 could deliver.

This is why I still have flat lists of Files and Releases in there. Contributors will want to see stats and work at the level of their portfolio as such, not necessarily in the context of batches.

I realize I have a long way to go, but I'm not a quitter ;)

All feedback, positive and negative is totally welcome. Don't hold back ;)

Keyword counting and automatic removal of duplicate keywords would be my first request.

Some explanation of why the CV in the refine section is suddenly much smaller than it was before and less logical for sub-choices.

Both these things make uploading a lot more painful and time consuming than before.

That said, I do appreciate the work you do Franky - keep it up!
Title: Re: DeepMeta v3 Coming soon...
Post by: FrankyDM on February 04, 2017, 16:17
Thanks!
Keyword counting and auto duplicate removal is already in test. Should make it to release soon.

As for the CV. All I can say is that the API switched from using the iStock CV to the Getty CV. We're all learning about the differences now. In any case, I have no choice: only Getty keyword terms are accepted now.

A lot of users do seem to have a non-english language set as their keyword language at the ESP site:
https://esp.gettyimages.com/app/profile

I'm assuming this automatically got defaulted when their ESP account was setup.
Non English as keyword language is currently very funky and almost unusable (I've been informed a fix is being worked on).
Of course this is worsening the perception of the Getty CV for some users...

Feel free to post more bugs, rants and suggestions. I'm monitoring all channels (with FB being the worst to keep track of)
Thanks

Wish: Maybe it's possible to not have to be forced every time to chose for the country (the Netherlands in my case) but the last country used to keep as the default choice.

Yep, totally agree. It's a huge list, and most contributors will often just use one or a few.
Considering a few options on how to best approach this, but it's definitely on the list. Thanks!

This should work, actually. You made me doubt, so I just tested it to make sure. Added an EPS and JPG thumbnail, and the IPTC data (title, description and keywords) was correctly extracted from the thumbnail JPG.

If you have an example JPG where this doesn't appear to work for you, please send it to me and I'll do some testing.
I agree IPTC imports make a night-and-day difference.

Effluent (as in sewage) disambiguates to Wealth and Luxury (confused with Affluent) :o

Or is that the way it comes from Getty? Probably right for Getty Effluent=affluent :D

Anyhoo if this is the new standard from Getty it's just really time consuming and makes it even less worth while than the 15% royalty.

Thanks Franky for all your hard work providing for free Deepmeta which Getty should be paying you for all your work!!!

I've uploaded v3 and all my files from the old version are gone. Somewhere it says I can continue to run V2 separately but the v3 installation seems to have written over v2, so I can't run the old version.

How can I access all of that previous information?

Me.

But I attribute it to the fact that I tried to use my iStock email and password since I didn't receive the new credentials. Login seems to work, but then I am not actually enabled to use ESP.

Did you receive their email?

I'm still quite new to microstock and this forum keeps surprising me. Lowest commissions, terrible site usability, confusing sales data and now even concealed earnings, dumb support and usual greed... And you keep examining some new version of additional app for just one site (which is really weird by itself). I guess they should try paid access to their site...

Reporting bugs and frustrated issues so far:
1). bring back ctrl+c > ctrl+v shortkeys option. Is really annoying to click everything with mouse
2). When uploading, and some bug occurs, the uploading stops, and you need to click on "upload" once again manually. Make it auto please.

Question to frank: if i have 3 different types of photoshoots, i.e. refreshing drink ; people in the park; light bulbs. Can i all 3 of  them add to same batch upload and upload as one whole group? or i need to create 1 batch for refreshing drink, and another batch for people in the park and another for lightbulbs?

Don't get me wrong Franky, I do appreciate Deepmeta and your years of support, refusing to accept any kind of payment from contributors. I'm glad Getty did the right thing and put you on the payroll.

My frustration is with ESP which is much more cumbersome and less transparent than what we had. I log in, and am greeted with a big nothing, a nuclear winter of zero data. I can't even see any of my portfolio. Did they solicit any kind of feedback from actual contributors before rolling this out and foisting it on the community?

Granted, the old upload interface was istock's Achilles heel, but with Deepmeta 2.X, uploading, tracking portfolio and performance was a joy. Deepmeta 3.X, as it stands now is a step back into the dark ages. Again, not your fault, we're all Getty's handmaidens in this with no say.

I'm hoping things will improve, but at the moment, I have zero motivation to upload, especially in light of ever dwindling sales.

Again, thanks for your hard work, if you had a hundred siblings to run IT, things would be ok.

The new v3 does not overwrite the old version. If you're on windows, you should see both versions in the installed applications list.

In any case, once the dust settles and there is more known about which statistics will be made available from the ESP API, I will add import functionality for the old V2 data, which is still there. V3 stores its data alongside the old one.

If it's not too much trouble, perhaps you can get the file to me through dropbox or similar. Just a thought. Thanks

Don't worry, and I understand. DeepMeta 3 is currently more of a version 1, because of the decision I made to rebuild some architectural blocks from the ground up. It's an investment I decided to make, and I am 100% willing to take any criticism this results in. All justified. You have to know what your goal is, and mine is still to make uploading and follow up of an iStock portfolio as efficient as possible.

I'm in this for the long term. 8)

The iStock/Getty unification is also a kind of reset, but I know first hand there's a dedicated and talented team behind ESP. The whole migration thing was a major undertaking, and I guess the only way is up for them too.

Having something else than "English" as keywording language in your profile at the ESP site is not working well at the moment, with funky keyword suggestions. Until this is fixed, set to english at: https://esp.gettyimages.com/app/profile
Then logout and in again. After that, keywording in DeepMeta will be sane again.

Don't forget how big and old that site is. There are thousands of photos uploaded by each of many contributors. It's no surprise they are STILL in top tier. There is no chance for an oil tanker to sink in 5 minutes. I guess the poll made by relatively new contributors uploading only for 2 or 3 years would look completely different. And the poll made by the newest authors would surely be without istock - they simply don't know their earnings there :)

What's the big deal about batches?
Pro: you could get the pics showing as from same set.
Con: If you upload a batch which hits the database at a time when best match is penalising new files, you might effectively 'lose' these files forever, and it's not as though we can delete them an reupload them at a more favourable time, as we could before. Many people have historically split batches while uploading for that reason.

(Franky, I'm not getting at you, I see it's what iS is encouraging via ESP.)

Hi Francky,

Thanks a lot for this update of DeepMeta. I like the interface even better than the version2 ! And I understand that the main drawbacks (batches, date, country, and no information on earnings) are not due to you.

Here's one small suggestion after using the new version of DeepMeta:

When working with a file, it would be nice to be able to delete a keyword in the rightmost column (under "Please refine..."). Sometimes it happens that one of my auto-loaded IPTC keywords is not relevant because I cannot find the right meaning in the vocabulary list offered by Getty. In this case, I have to let this keyword on the top, and continue working with the second keyword. Or I can click on the unwanted keyword and then delete it in the column on the left. But either way, it would be even faster to directly delete it from the column on the right  :)

I've just unloaded several videos through DeepMeta3 and its much better than ESP because it shows embedded titles, keywords etc.

You still need to wade through the annoyance of "suggested keywords" but copy-paste of them to other files is much easier.

The whole interface just seems a lot nicer to use.

Spliting baches improves sales, I tried it both ways and I know.

Another suggestion: Add a functionality to move a file from one batch to another one (could be quite practical when you notice that you were in the wrong batch after having refined all keywords)  :D

Been thinking about that too. I think it would also be useful for cases where you're forced to use multiple batches, because they can only contain 1 type. Say you have a shoot and took some pictures and footage. This will take 2 separate batches. Copying between them will be useful. Sharing releases as well, in fact.

My DM3 is empty - I can not see any of my active files nor my balance. I seem to be logged in correctly and if I upload and submit a photo it works fine, is everyone having the same issue?

And one more question about the keywords - there are many geographical names missing in the dictionary, it concerns most of my photos so I'm unable to use the most important tags, what can I do with it?

Maybe Franky could comment, many thanks

If you upgrade to the latest version, you'll get more accurate error messages. Been making lots of improvements there the last few days.

The new message you'll get for that situation is "Timeout".
I've increased the delay before such an error is given, but at a certain point you have to make the program stop trying something.

This typically means there's a bad network condition or the server is seeing lots of traffic.
Make sure to select the closest "Upload region" in DeepMeta preferences. The first release of DeepMeta 3 did not properly keep this setting, so you may want to check again.

For keywording to work, DeepMeta needs to login to contact the ESP server to get the vocabulary terms.
If you see your username at the bottom left of the DeepMeta window, you're logged in.

The latest version (3.0.3) will warn when you try to keyword without being logged in ... instead of waiting forever..

About the "emptiness": here's an explanation (item N8):
http://www.deepmeta.com/Support/FAQ/#N8 (http://www.deepmeta.com/Support/FAQ/#N8)

About geo names: make sure to use the latest version(s). From 3.0.2 onwards, keywords for which the Getty vocabulary has no matches now get transferred straight to the left hand "valid" column.

These are marked with an (*) asterisk, meaning that the term is not in the vocabulary. It is still searchable by buyers, but is not translated.

Another try. Language set in English at ESP, log out,log in. It sticks at ESP. But not at Deep Meta, it seems. Crazy keywords if I keyword in English. Finally, after half an hour, I surrender and I do what I didn't want to do: keywording in my own language. This time works. But now, something happens with the model release: a triangle. Went to help. "MRs have to have a date of birth set". "Set"? Set where?? The date of birth of the model is handwritten in the release. Well, it doesn't matter because, in the meanwhile, DeepMeta has freezed and I even can't go out of the program. No matter where I click I just get a sound, and nothing more. Well, enough for today. Summary:  Two hours spent, zero photos uploaded. Closing the program with the Crtl + alt +delete system. Fuming.

Weird that the language setting in ESP doesn't have effect. This worked for other users. I'm afraid I have no control over this from DeepMeta. I have asked Getty devs to get direct access to this setting. The current work-around is kind of lame (and doesn't even seem to work for everyone).

About MR dates: I'm showing this in the preview movie at about 6:30
http://www.deepmeta.com/GettingStarted/ (http://www.deepmeta.com/GettingStarted/)

No sure why you got stuck in the end, but could it be you double-clicked one of the MRs and the popup window came up, but is somewhere on the screen in a corner? That's typically when you get a a sound. If you get this again, restart DeepMeta and in Preferences, Advanced, click "clear local database". this will reset your window positions to sane values. Mind you, it will also remove the local batches and data you added, so only do this in case you bump into the beep sound" issue again. I intend to add checks on window positions to avoid this kind of situation.

Thanks for hanging in there and sorry about your time and frustration. I promise things will systematically improve.

Bugs and tips found so far:

1). after updating from 3.0.2 to 3.0.3 all my batches and files disappeared, however if i click on batches menu, it says all old ones i had, but they are just invisible/disappeared
2). please bring back the arrow buttons combo to work: i usually did ctrl+c > ctrl+v next file and arrow button down to next file, and repeat. but now after i do ctrl+v and save, arrow buttons does not work anymore, and i need manually re-click with mouse once again. slightly frustrating
3). adding new keyword, sometimes stucks at "looking for it" and nothing really much happening. Then closing a window > reopening it seems fixes the problem

But so far stuff is good, keep it up with updated @frankydm

The keywording panel is nice to work with, it's a time saver! But.... there is still some work to do:
The suggestions it sometimes show do not always make sense to me. For example: Graveyard, it comes up with Bermuda Triangle. I know some planes and ships went missing there but are there really so many images submitted about the triangle that this has to be shown as a suggestion?

Big issue so far:

When starting up deepmeta, often all my batches and files are gone (place is blank and empty), i can repeat closing software and opening it again, and randomly they appear and disappear again. I cant upload anything due that, is really annoying. Sometimes i launch it, and batches are there, but files are not, Next time it is otherway, but most of the time everything is empty, like nothing is there, and whenever i create new batch it looks like its only one there, but after closing the software once again, everything is gone.

Well, I can't do much about the terms being suggested, as these come from the Getty Vocabulary, but the latest version (3.0.4 for Mac, or 3.0.5 for Win) allow you to just select the keyword itself if none of the suggested terms make sense.

This will add the keyword as non-vocabulary keyword. These are still searchable by buyers, they are just not translated.
Give it a try and let me know.

The new versions also immediately put keywords in the left valid list if there is only one Vocabulary term available and it's named exactly like your keyword.

Well, couldn't is simply mean you "have no access rights for creating a batch of that type"? ;)

What type of batch is it? (Image, Video, Illustration, Editorial image)
And do you have upload rights for that type?

At the moment, I don't have access to that info from the ESP server, so I only find out when actually trying to create such a batch.

You need at least two clicks to see thumbnails (one by one) on the list page.  Thumbs should ve visible at first sight. I don't like this interface, so I wish you can work out the errors in DeepMeta. What's te use of shooting if you can't upload the images?

And do you have upload rights for that type?

At the moment, I don't have access to that info from the ESP server, so I only find out when actually trying to create such a batch.

Let me know. Thanks

Hi, i have no problem uploading with DM before the ESP system
Its an illustration, and I don't need the model releases / property releases so if left them blank
And when you go to the ESP page: https://esp.gettyimages.com/app
There's a drop down list at the top left, allowing you to select batch types. It can list 4 types: "Creative Video", "Creative Image", "Creative Illustration" and "Editorial Image". When you click that list, do you see "Creative Illustration" in that list?

How about the old big space for keywords, so we can see them all at once?
Now is very difficult and time consuming.
Thank you!

No, just "iStock Creative Image" and "iStock Editorial Image"
why "Creative Illustration" isn't show in there..?
do you think "Error 403-forbidden" because of this?

I also think that is important. Pasting and removing keywords is very difficult to that single line keyword box.

Other than that, I think I love the new version too.

Yes that's the reason.
Some other users are not seeing the types they expect either, so I've added more info here (item N2):
http://www.deepmeta.com/Support/FAQ/#N2 (http://www.deepmeta.com/Support/FAQ/#N2)

Better contact Getty and ask why you don't see Illustrations in the list on the ESP site (assuming you're accepted as Illustration contributor of course ;)

Thanks, and true the keyword box is small. You'll be able to make that zone as big as you like in the next release (v3.0.6, planned for this evening)

Hello, thanks for the great app.

Is there a way to check the file status, accepted, rejected etc.? Am I missing something like a fetch data button etc.?

Or do we need to check it on ESP website?

Thanks.

That's coming soon ... after I've fixed a few issues, I'll start adding additional functionality, like 2-way sync with the ESP server.
Thanks.

I miss 2 things that were available in the previous version:
1) column with description characters;
2) editorial click - so date, month and year appears automatically.
Thank you!

Thanks for the suggestions. A few questions:

1) Just to make sure: you mean a counter that shows the number of characters you currently have in the description?
2) Where do you want the date, month and year to appear? In the description field? (which now also acts as caption field)?
It's no longer required to put the date there, the separate "Date created" field is enough, and that should be filled in automatically from the IPTC data.

Let me know if I misunderstood anything and thanks again for chiming in with your suggestions!

Where does DM pull the sub-categories for Keywords, how did these come about in the first place with iS (only been doing this 18month so some history lesson required)?

It a time consuming extra step but even more annoying when for example I can't tag 'Civil Aviation' because the only suggestion is 'Ancient Civilization'.

Yes, I was able to see how many characters I have in the description after I write it down.
About the date - I dod not know it is not required anymore. But for editorial images I think it should be in the description. All the big news agancies do it like that.
Thank you for youe effords.

Thanks for your clarification on the description character count. I've put it on the list.

As for editorial: here's what I got from the FAQ (requires forum login):
https://contributors.gettyimages.com/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&m=68123#post68123

Quote
"For iStock Editorial Use Only uploads, contributors previously needed to add a detailed caption describing the scene, which had to follow a very strict format. However, the creation date and country are now required fields for all ESP photo submissions and it was decided to relax the rules a little on Editorial captions. ESP doesn't have a caption field, so contributors must use the Description field instead. In the Description field you will no longer need to start your caption with the strict formatting for city, country and date. Please continue to provide a useful description of the scene, including the WWWWW’s of the image - who, what, where, when and why. Also, please add any info relevant to the image to help the inspector and any potential buyers, but it no longer needs to be in a rigid format."

Which is great news for sure. Getting the rigid format right was hard and caused a lot of questions.

Hi,

I have few questions with DM 3.0.6.

1. Is it necessary to adding MRs for every batch, even if I added same MRs in another batch from same shooting. The problem is I can not add more than 100 images per batch, therefore I have to separate in few batches, and every time I have to add same MRs to batch.

2. After I assign MRs to image, for example 2 MRs, and I see two ticks next to the name of MR, after I click OK on editing windows, on main window I see 4 MRs assigned to image... DM double those MRs. To explain better: there is two same MR for every person on image, or 4 MR if there is 2 persons on image.

3. I started to uploading one batch of 100 images, and DM uploaded 3 files. Now, when I click upload, it uploads only MR of first file in queue and stop. Any idea?

Thank you for your help, and I really appreciate your work.

EDIT: I think I figure our question number 2. That is because I have copied all information from another batch, and DM copied and MRs also, even if they do not exist in newly created batch.

Thanks for your detailed report.

I was initially going to block copying releases from one batch to another, but forgot this, so the feature remained enabled. That's why you get these errors.

Now I see so many users are using this feature to copy releases between batches (indeed due to the batch limit of 100, I guess), I will leave the feature enabled and will fix any issues. Thanks!

Thank you, you did a great job with new update with MRs.

In history log while I importing new images there is few non understandable errors:

1. Error out of memory
2. JPG too small  (my jpg file is 6656x4228)

Also while I am deleting images from DM, DeepMeta only deletes image thumbnail, not complete row with image data... I am trying to delete not submitted images ("to edit images)

Thank you!

Hi Franky, thanks for your great job.

A question about new Getty sales reports.

We need to upload the .txt sales report in Deep Meta and linking sales and thumbnails ... Read this pdf, excel or txt report without thumbnails is a huge waste of time ...

Maybe could you do something for us ?

Thanks in advance.

I'm not Franky, but obviously it's because iStock has changed their API.

For some reason, whenever I click on add model releases, DeepMeta crashes. I got it to work one time randomly (thank goodness as I uploaded everything I needed for that time), but it started crashing again every time. I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem?

Uploading with DM today: nothing but errors:
AwS upload 404 notfound

error 422 422 keywords: requires a minimum of 5 keywords (mine have 20-40 each)

What's going on? Will all failed files be set back to their batches?

I've downloaded the latest version of DM. All the files I've send to the uploadqueue are back as "to upload"...
when I try to adjust the keywords it says "File already send to ESP, may no longer be edited".
Again, while uploading some files I see this AWS upload 404 not found message.

When you create a new batch choose editorial image in batch type rather than image.

I'm looking into the 404 errors. These seem to be related to bad network conditions, but I'm trying to avoid them all together.

using 3.0.3

uploading is fast and takes seconds, but submitting takes up to 10 minutes per image

never been so slow

edit: now it doesn't submit them, only upload (I check on esp and see files are uploading but not submitted)

am ok with that but it takes so much time to fail submitting and start upload of next file

You should be able to click the "Submit" button at the ESP site, at the top right corner. If it's disabled, you probably need to complete some fields shown at the right, in red.

Yes, it takes ages at the moments for the thumbnails to generate.
Don't worry about that though. I make DeepMeta explicitly wait for thumbnails to be generated, as test, because some vector artists were seeing issues with thumbnails.

Upcoming versions will no longer wait for the thumbnails, so uploading will be fast again.

Hi Frank,

Thanks for developing this new version.

I've started trying to use it but I'm finding it extremely tedious and time consuming to select the keywords. It would be a lot quicker if there was several columns of keywords rather than just that one column. Also if you skip past some keywords in the refine column and select something further down you constantly have to keep scrolling back and forth.

I also find copying and pasting keywords between similar images isn't working.

Thanks for your help,
Mike

Thanks for  Mike.

I'm curious why you're skipping past keywords in the refine column.
If you work the way I show in the intro video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FcuqTYb7T0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9FcuqTYb7T0)), you simply either pick the term/meaning that applies most, or delete the box. The next keyword box will scroll right up. I find I hardly have to move the mouse to go through them all. (note that earlier versions did not allow you to delete the boxes, so it used to be harder, that's true)

Just trying to learn different needs, so I'm always interested to get feedback. Thanks!

Thanks Franky.... that's the big green "new submission" button.

Before I hit the button, I had one batch: 2 uploaded, 0 submiited
After the button: 0 uploaded, 0 submitted.....

Submission date: 2017-02-27  (No images)
No files are associated with this submission.

Looks like the green button works as a "Delete"button!

I found the needs revision message: where can we do that? Would be great if those files were send back to DM for a re-edit!

Ah no, not that one: that's for creating new (submission batches). You have to go back to the main page:
https://esp.gettyimages.com/app (https://esp.gettyimages.com/app)
Where you should see the batches listed below. You then click on the number of one of the batches, it will take you to a new tab with the files.

In the attached screenshot, you see 2 batches: "video" and "New-Edito": you'd have to click on the number 693897 for the video batch to see the files in that batch and complete them (just an example of course).

And, you're right, it will be easier when you can do everything in DeepMeta. I'm currently working on that functionality.
Thanks
