Hello,

many of my editorial images are rejected because of bad caption (The caption information for this submission appears to be inaccurate or misleading)

The images are approved anywhere else including Shutterstock. Can you guys please tell me what is wrong with my captions? I can not get it right somehow.

Example :

Cedar Key, Florida - January 15, 2015 : Waterfront buildings on stilts in the historic downtown Cedar Key photographed from the fishing pier.

You need to put the country at the beginning, so either 'Cedar Key, Florida, USA' or 'Cedar Key, USA'. IMO the latter is more helpful to a potential buyer, but both would be acceptable.

Yes, iS has their own format.  If you use DeepMeta it helps.

What she said. Although it's pretty obvious that Cedar Key, Florida is in the USA.  :) I feel into the same trap and had to adjust. Here's one of my captions, that's accepted at IS and SS. Which is good, since I don't have to change everything for each agency...

Milwaukee, Wisconsin USA - June 1, 2008: IndyCar Racing League. Milwaukee Mile 2008. Brienne Pedigo ABC sports pit announcer before the race.

Yes, you are correct but honest, do you think a buyer doesn't know that Milwaukee Wisconsin, isn't in the US? How about Washington DC?  :)

But that reminds me, IS the title and description aren't searchable by the agency search anyway!

Do you send IS editorial sports photos and do they accept them? Because I seem to rememeber, that back in the days when they introduced editorial, sport photography was excluded from the acceptable standards?

May have been that Getty, who covers many of these same subjects, didn't want IS diluting their profits. Can't say what they will take or not.

MLB, NBA, NFL, anything major, there's probably a Getty team at every game. Auto racing? Indy 500 I'm sure is a pack of people, every couple hundred feet. NASCAR sure.

Some of the events that I work, I used to see a Getty local (contract shooter) at every event. I don't see that guy and don't see the "Getty" stickers on lenses or the desks in media. That doesn't mean they aren't there. I just don't see them anymore.

The general way it works is. Getty pays someone local/regional to cover the event. They may upload some deadline shots, and then later, everything goes to the home office. The photographer gets a pay check, Getty (or any of these other news agencies) gets the images, and owns all rights.

I can understand why any agency that's paying someone to work an event, would not accept and compete with their own images that they own, and already paid for.

Remember the news? SI cut their last six photographers. And from someone who knows them and works that field, much higher up than I ever will, those six already took a 50% cut in pay, so they could still have a job.

I have no direct knowledge of whether Getty has cut the hiring subcontractors or not. I can say the pay for shooting sports has dropped from good or making a living to, out of work or taking individual day rate jobs for low pay.

Print news is still in the process or withering atrophy and dying off. Many magazines are cutting back, or shutting their print divisions. And if you look, TV, Cable and now streaming video are kicking the heck out of still images.

You can make more selling perfect cheeseburgers and sliced vegetables, than sports on Microstock.  :) I do it because I love the work and the events. I also like shooting large scenic panoramas and trying to find unique vistas. They don't fly off the sites either... but that's what I like.
