Title: Getty Images' Expectations for a Fair Working Environment
Post by: Clair Voyant on April 04, 2018, 12:22
Oxymoron of the year award goes to...

Seriously? Getty sends out an email lecturing about expectations of a "fair" working environment?

I'd say it's pretty much non-existent as far as contributors are concerned - pennies for images and a buck or two for video is not a fair working environment at all.

They can't even get their April Fool joke out on time  ::)
I haven't got the email.
Got it, must have been in a later send-out batch, or something.

The events around #MeToo, presumably.
It's particularly focussed on an ethical way of using models.

So carefully worded that most people won't even know what it means, but presumably gives them a fig leaf of cover in case of lawsuits going after their deep pockets.   A masterpiece of corporate-speak.

LOL, at least I got a good laugh in today, what a joke! They treat the artist like dirt! They flat out lied to me on more the one Occassion. One example is when my video clips got ported to Getty I was told I would never make less money per sale then I do on iStock.... Uhhh yeah right I have statements  to prove that false!!

I'm seriously tempted to file a whistleblower complaint against them. They are so full of @#&$%^

Recent news stories of a photograph or two sexually harassing models inc. underage girls.

"Getty" and "fair" in the same sentence. Barf.

Yes it is possible: "Getty is going to the fair…"

I am so angry right now I think my head might explode.

I wonder if customers really don't know what their reputation is in terms of business practices over the last several decades. Is anybody reading this and not either laughing out loud or being infuriated?

It's this kind of exploitative business practice and corporate culture that foster the environment where other forms of abuse can exist or be easily covered up.

Dear Getty,

Is kicking out one of your top producing photographers because he blew the whistle on you giving images away fair? Is right out lying to people fair? Is selling my 4k video clips for pennies fair? Is a secretive culture fair? Is not answering direct questions on the forum fair? Well to let you know I never treat my models in any way close to the way you treat artist! If I did I would probably be in jail.

But you won't.

I wasn't even thinking about that!!!! Oh the irony that they are asking people to whistle blow with their track record of how they treat whistle blowers.

Jimminy Cricket It's only April and Getty clinched it.

For me it's especially hilarious that they talk about 'talent'. When I was growing up in the West of Scotland, "Ah'm gaun tae the dancin'/pub the see if there's ony talent" didn't mean, "I'm going out to look for people I can have a hands-off professional relationship with".
(According to Urban Dictionary, that usage is still current, and not just here.)

This line in particular made me barf:

"We understand that you are independent. However, as your business practices while working on content for Getty Images may reflect upon the integrity of us all, we want to remind you that how you conduct yourself when creating imagery is just as important as the imagery itself.  "

That's right, I'm independent so you have no say in how I do my business. Rest assured it's more ethical and fair than you have ever done, Getty. In fact, your practices reflect upon the integrity of us contributors, not the other way around.

In the U.S., "talent" refers to actors and models. That's why we have "talent agencies"...they represent actors and models.

It might be best not to name individuals unless they give permission.

Apparently the problem is solved. I'm not producing any stock art any more to have a working environment.

When I first saw the letter title I thought I was going to read something along the lines of:-
"We've been listening to your grievances and recognise we've made mistakes. We want to treat contributors more fairly and will be making changes........"
When I read the actual letter I was gobsmacked. How naive of me.
