iStockphoto today announced that it has hired digital media industry veteran, Nick King, as vice president, international. King will spearhead the company’s international development and will focus his efforts on reaching new customers and markets around the globe.
“Nick’s experience will be a huge asset to the iStock management team as we prepare for our next phase of growth,” said Kelly Thompson, COO of iStockphoto. “Building our international presence is a fundamental part of our strategy and Nick brings a unique skill set that will be instrumental in making that happen.”

“iStockphoto is an incredible company that has deservedly reached rock star status in its industry,” said King. “I’m looking forward to working with the talented people throughout the organisation to help build an even larger and more diverse global fan base.”

Good luck to him.
I wonder if they're going to have a new Head of Progamming too.

Yes but his mother's not picking him up from school until later!

Yep, just keep right on expanding while your current infrastructure doesn't support your current customer base. Makes plenty of sense.

Huh

Why waste resources coddling your existing customer base when there are so many new people you can piss off?

They need to spend the $ from the commission cut to try to take some of Fotolias international customers that Fot is planning on retaining with the $ from their commission cuts so IS will need to cut commissions to counteract that move....

I wonder if money isn't what makes Nick King happy?

LOL. It's sad.
Here I am dutifully uploading editorial photos with subjects like Gladstone's Land, yet the apostrophe isn't recognised in the keywords (if it isn't in the CV you can't add a word with an apostrophe 'for your own use') or the caption (where it changes and apostrophe to a backslash).
And the repeated words in the title still aren't allowed, forcing me to title, "aerial view of London featuring London_Eye".

Instead of a "digital media industry veteran" they should have hired web dev industry veteran.

My gut feeling is that when KK takes the fall for all the site problems (and contributor discontent) and resigns with his $5 million golden handshake that Nick King will take over.

Nothing like hiring an million-dollar salary fat cat as you steal money from the masses. Typical big business short-sightedness. Let them eat cake!

Maybe you're all familiar with the term "rainmaker".  That's what we call these suits that start showing up after the takeover, when the wild projections haven't being met.  It's usually not just one guy but a parade, with a typical tenure of maybe 6 months for each miracle worker, followed by a golden parachute jump, and a new face appears.

I went to have a read about Mr. King and found it interesting to read the career timeline there versus the presentation in the press release.

From 2008 to present, he was a consultant (Arden Media). He was at EMI from 1993-96, Virgin from 96-99, was VP Marketing at Boxman.com from 99-2001 and then from 2002-8 was at Nielsen.

Google doesn't have anything much on Arden Media beyond their web site, so it's hard to say what he's been up to for the last 3 years.

He got an MA from Oxford 1984 - 87, so I'm guessing he's in his 40s. MBA from INSEAD 1992

I don't have any information on why he left Nielsen 3 years ago, but combine a step-down job with a long gap, and rightly or wrongly, I draw conclusions from that.

Would this be a fair translation?

Quote
Traditional portfolio sales are stagnating and the new collections are not selling well enough among our existing microstock customer base to justify their expense so we need someone to help find new customers to buy them (but not existing Getty customers).

I wonder if the new guy will be based in Calgary ... I would guess "no" because selling internationally would be difficult from such a remote location, and if the guy is truly a superstar then I don't think he would relish the thought of moving there.

Sometimes these new, rising stars are being groomed to eventually take over the top management ... notice he's described in the press release as "president, international" and "CEO level".  But I guess that depends on how much new business he can rustle up.  If he is being groomed and he isn't based in Calgary, that might signal an eventual move of the HQ elsewhere.

There was an opening recently for someone to have a big marketing role, but I didn't realise it was at VP level.
OTOH, they're still looking, for ever, for someone who can 'break their software'.

I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled back enough $$ from contributors this morning to pay for a month or two of that salary!
