Title: .MOV export with Premiere Pro CC 2018 HD and 4K - is it even possible?
Post by: shaggeroz on October 15, 2018, 20:21
We tried using the recommended export settings suggested by iStock however it doesn't seem possible using Premier Pro CC 2018 on a Windows machine.
Not for 4K or HD. It isn't possible to encode h264 in a MOV container any more with PP (apparently).
If anyone has any suggestions on what settings we can try we'd appreciate it.
Storyblocks wanted .MOV for HD footage and we encoded it using DNxHR and it was accepted. No such luck for iStock.

I use a 3rd party conversion tool. You can do an online search to find your favorite (although one company has spammed the crap out of the search engines so it usually only shows their tool - I think its wondershare or something? not the greatest).

But there are several other tools that are pretty good...

Just export it from PP/AE, and then use one of those tools to convert to .mov/etc.

(Incidentally, I do find it a bit silly that videoblocks/storyblocks doesn't do backend conversion, and "requires" a ".mov" file for 1920x1080, but a 4K can "either" be mov or mp4...

Makes for a lot of extra work for me...

mp4 is crap for editing. It needs more processing power when using such files...

I find this difficult to believe if the same codec is used: both MP4 and MOV are just containers, and very similar too.

For the record I was finally able to create an acceptable .MOV H.264 video.
Things to note.
1. 4K has to be 3840x2160. Video shot in 4096x2160 has to be rescaled to 3840x2160.
2. Export the video from Premiere Pro CC 2018 as a .mp4 encoded with H.264
3. VideoProc by Winxdvd can then export your mp4 as .MOV and encode with H.264. This step seems to be a waste of time but Getty wants .MOV  ::)

Now the hardest decision to make is whether I could be bothered seeing as nearly everybody else takes 4096x2160 H.264 MP4s as export from PP CC 2018.  :o

As far as the suggestions to use DaVinci or PP CC 2017 go.   ::)
Thanks but we have what we have but you if you want to go to the extra expense or effort go for it.

to export in .MOV directly from Premiere or after effect or Media Encoder I use this plugin that works very well!

Could you please tell which settings you use for converting with Any Video Converter?
I'm trying to convert from .mp4 to .mov. But I can't find any of the codecs that Istock supports. Thank you in advance!

If you have QuickTime installed on your computer, then when you go to export a video, either from Adobe Premiere Pro or directly from Adobe Media Encoder, you click on the Format drop down menu (from within the Video tab) and one of the options it will give you will be QuickTime. When you select QuickTime as your Format then it will output the video as MOV format. But if you don't have QuickTime installed on your computer then it wont show up as a Format option in either Premiere Pro or Media Encoder. Hope that helps.

If you're using an updated Premiere or After Effects workstation, then Quicktime is available withOUT needing Quicktime installed on your Windows system.

A real good reason to stay up to date.

Thank you! I guess I've figured it out. The thing is that in AVC we need to choose the codec in the Video Options tab. At first, I thought that none of those codecs are supported by Istock. But looks like x264 is actually h.264 which is supported by Istock. So I chose it and I was able to submit it for the review. I hope it will be approved.

I guess x264 was the one you converted with too. Probably it was chosen by default.
