I just spotted one of my photos being used as an icon on an Apple Store app. I checked the downloads and I see an EL was never purchased for this image. Since they are using the image to sell an App should an EL have been purchased for this image? If so, has anyone had any experience with this sort of situation in the past and should iStock be notified?

Contact IS for a good absolute answer.

The answer in the past is that an icon doesn't necessarily need an EL.  "Using an image to sell an App" is along the lines of what most of our content is used for - to sell something.  Now, if it a screensaver app or a collection of swimsuit images, it would, likely, because the _content_ is what is being sold.

Many thanks. I did send a support ticket to IS to inquire about it as the previous poster suggested. What you said sounds plausible though. I have also come across one of my images being used for an album cover in the past as well as to sell a web site template. So I am a bit curious about this issue in general.

Album covers, book covers, inclusion in a template for sales purposes (but NOT for usage once sold) are all acceptable under the regular license.

Thanks for the clarification. In the case of the template it was part of the template being sold, but possibly an extended license was purchased on that image as required.

All the things that CAN be done without an extended license leave me wondering what would require an extended license?  There doesn't seem to be anything left. :P

Yes... the guys who created these terms (also the 500,000 print limit) had no idea of how much images may be worth.
