I tried to sign up as a contributor at IS yesterday but i got a message saying something about new contributors are disable at the present time.
is this a momentary glitch or are they not accepting new aps?

The site has been up and down like a yoyo over the past few days.
You know, like Douglas Adams wrote: "I feel like a military academy. Pieces of me keep passing out."

Yes, consider yourself lucky, read threads in this forum and in the IS forum and give it another think.  ;)

That being said, I am certain they will be accepting new contributors and it is just one of many bugs on the site right now.

I agree with previous posters who said: don't waste your time on IS.

Also purchase good lubricant before you submit and pads for knees.

I once would have said that you absolutely should add IS to your list of sites to upload to (and I'm sure the bugs with new applications will get fixed in a week or two if you decide to go ahead). Even at the 20% royalty rate, their volume of sales is high and the experience of getting your files up to snuff so you can get them accepted is worthwhile. At 15% starting commission (what it is now) its a much less clear picture unless you (a) plan to go exclusive there (which doesn't make much sense unless you are Daniel Laflor V2.0, in which case you probably should) or (b) want to do it for the learning experience.

Things are in turmoil of late - royalty cuts, many bugs and just about zero trust because of a pile of broken promises.

I'm exclusive at IS now, but was independent for nearly 4 years before that, so I can see both sides of the  coin (so to speak).

Good luck

Go for it. In pure mercenary terms it's another revenue stream and if you're independant.....entry into the Big 4 is a must. I reckon the problem you have is only temporary and (as already mentioned) part of the bugged out site we have to deal with at present.

It's much harder to get ahead now on iStock than it was previously.  Inspections are a little tougher, royalties have decreased for non-exclusives, and you are competing with a larger pool of images and contributors than a few years ago.

Combine that with all the problems that the site's been having, and you definitely have your work cut out for you. Be prepared to upload like TONS if you expect to get any sort of decent return on your images.

As much as recent changes have angered a lot of contributors and buyers (this one included), I still think it's one of the best places for microstock.

Yep, the site is as buggy as all get-out right now!  I'm sure eventually all current issues get resolved by summer!  ;)  I'm an IS exclusive. 95% of my port is vector illos.  I think since so much has changed in the past year at IS - percentage cuts and Royalty Credit targets, I might submit there, but not exclusively.  Good Luck!
