Topic: Are Veer and Depositphotos really in the Middle Tier?

(Read 4945 times)

« on: August 23, 2010, 18:13 »

I am trying to keep up with what newer sites are worth uploading to and which aren't.  From what I have read in these forums I was under the impression that sales at Veer and Depositphotos were pretty dismal.  Add to that the problem with Veer sales disappearing or showing with zero royalties, and I am surprised to see them in the Middle Tier of agencies.

I would love to hear from members of Veer and/or Depositphotos if the sales are better than I had thought...

Because of what I've been hearing here, I haven't submitted to veer yet. I'm going to wait and see. I did go to deposit photo. Low views and no sales so far. I stopped uploading there and working on the other sites where I actually get at least some views. You're probably looking for more experienced members, but I thought I'd add my 2 cents anyway.

Short answer: nope.

Longer answer: this month Veer represents just 1% of my stock income; over the last 12 months it's 2.4%.  Deposit is .3% this month; and even with the upload bonus it's just 1.2% for the year.  If it weren't for a combination of optimism and boredom, I wouldn't bother.

Thanks for the replies.  Wonder who has rated them high enough to get them into the middle tier?

FYI: I had a sale every day the past week on DP, and today two. Considering the strenght and the volume of your port, and the ratios on DT, you can expect x20 there.

I didn't do the poll this month but Veer have replaced DT in the Big 4 for me so far in August.  DepositPhotos have had a few sub sales and 1 credit sale and are well down my list.

Middle Tier, yeah right  Roll Eyes

For me:

Crestock
Pond5
Clipdealer
Scanstockphoto

are each doing a lot better than either one of Veer or Depositphotos. What a joke to be in the "middle tier".

Bear also in mind that these 4 agencies are the only ones from the "low earners" that I signed up with.

veer are number 5 for me for the past few months. considering a couple of thousand of the images have bad keywording from snap and I have around 700 in the queue, I am very pleased with them. Easily outperform the rest of the middle tier

Deposit earns, but it is low. 1 or 2 subs or a low $ download most days. Has about half my port, when I upload a new batch I click through a few extras and so very slowly getting my whole port on. They are still gaining 30-40k images a week, like stockfresh I keep adding when I'm in the mood, but no great hurry. Considering its age, its not doing too bad, they have the mechanisms for driving traffic to the site, I'd put them in low earners, but I think they are one of the most likely to rise higher.

The last two months have been good at Veer - Good enough to be ahead of Canstock, Bigstock, and 123rf - and move into the #5 position for me. Largely due 'unlimited reproduction' sales. Overall I do see an uptick in sales.

DP is still a low earner - not many sales - but it is improving, slowly.

Veer is a slow earner for me but when I get a sale it seems to make up for the inactivity at that site.   I've had a few files sell there for $30+!  Just recieved a payout and I have a portfolio there with less than 250 images.

Wish they could review files as fast as the other sites!

I do want this site to become a main player!

(I haven't answered to the poll so my opinion isn't showing)

This month Veer has earned me more than DT! So this month Veer should be in my Big 4!

It's mostly because a few EL sales at Veer and the current weakness of DT - but I don't care where the money comes from as long as it keeps coming Smiley

Depositphotos definitely shouldn't be in the middle tier, I make more money even at Crestock, Scanstockphoto, Photocase. You should've uploaded your photos to DP when they had the promotion to get even a $100 (I did)

Short answer: Veer - yes, Depositphotos - no

Veer can be pretty decent some months and I still have hopes that they will increase business.  DepositPhotos is less for me than Veer.

DepositPhotos, GraphicLeftovers and crestock all have a 1.9 rating though so it could really go either way.  Yaymicro isn't far behind either.  That, and if more people put in their votes for Panthermedia and Pond5 they would be on the middle teer too and push the bottom ones out.

For me Veer is now better than BS, for example. But, knowing your situation, Lisa, I don't think you have time to upload to lower agencies. It looks like you need to produce more pictures to keep your portfolio and sales growing. I would suggest you to employee someone for retouching, keywording and uploading. That is a part of the job that takes too much time and it is not too big cost. I have the same problem, but I live in a small city and I can't find anyone good in Photoshop retouching. Maybe you can.

VEER is 1.0% of my total earnings (average 2010) - only slightly less than BS 1.7% and CAN 1.4%, while "Low Earners" are near 0% for me - so yes, it's "Middle Tier" in that sense.

Whether it's worth or not, it's another question; luckily - besides optimism and boredom as someone said - it's also very easy to upload to VEER (no categories).

DP I cannot say as I just started last month and only had a few subs sales.

Thanks very much for the replies!  Sounds like Veer may have some potential.  From other threads it sounds like they don't have their reviewing sorted out yet, though.  Maybe when they get through their backlog and/or get a handle on what to reject (or not) I will give them another try.

On hiring someone else to do my retouching/keywording/uploading - I enjoy doing that part of the job myself.  And I am already shooting as often as I want to, so there wouldn't be any productivity increase there.

I have no desire to expand into an image factory.  I am way too hands on - and besides, I don't want to dilute my earnings further by taking on employees.

so are those microstock website on right side which have no rating is arranged by voting too?

I mean I saw mostphotos are 3rf from the bottom, it means pond5 and photospin had better sales than mostphotos, for most contributors?

thanks.

Yeah, that's right.  They are arranged by votes but if they don't have more than 50 votes then their rating isn't shown and they are put below all the sites that DO have more than 50 votes.  If you click on 'more poll results' on the bottom of the area to the right you can see how many votes each site had as well as their 'real' order.

Veer has a sound backer in Corbis. Over the medium to long term they are a reasonable investment given the time it takes to upload there. No way middle tier for me, but a good proposition if you're looking to increase the number of sites you submit to.

I would happily drop Crestock and Yay were it not that, again, their upload process in very easy.

Deposit I don't know enough about.

I'll happily give Veer time, and think it wise to have a prescence early on.

For me with 1500 files at veer sales are really growing fast. They pay well and they are designer friendly and I use them a lot in my day job along with Getty and istock. . Last month was  my first $ 200 month. I wish them the very best.

For me Veer is running about the same as bigstock and 123rf- that is, not very good- about 4% of sales. For years I have had images in a collection at the macro veer site, but since Corbis came in, they seem to make one bad change after another, and the sales are dropping by huge leaps. I was hoping that the microstock website might be something that they could get going and make a splash with, but as always, everything is slow and half-hearted. As much as i detest some of the practices at istock, etc, there is at least a sense of urgency and competitiveness that is missing at corbis, and now veer. That's a shame, because veer has a great reputation with designers. It used to be the go to website for "fresh and new". Now, i don't know what they stand for. Take away Bill Gate's  money and maybe that would light a fire under them...

I have had images pending review on Veer for two months - this site has been a total waste of my time.

I had a brilliant august with Veer and to me it seems like they are starting to take off, September is starting well also.

As far as the top earning scale goes for me it is Shutterstock, iStock, Veer, Dreamstime, Panther...then a vast gulf until Fotolia and a few other dead loss sites.

My first submission to Veer resulted in 100% rejection (including material that had already sold on other sites), so I relegated it to a site that doesn't want what I do, and I haven't submitted anything since.
