Yes, you are misunderstanding something here. A photo gets restricted to "editorial use only" if it contains items for which you have no permission from the "owner" to include it in the image. Such as the face of a person without a model release, or a statue without some release from the artist. That photo cannot be used to promote a product or an opinion without those permissions and so the agencies restrict its use with an "editorial" marking.

A commercial image either has no protected items in it, or has written permissions (as in model and property releases) for commercial advertizing and similar uses.

A commercial photo can be used for editorial work, but not vice versa.

I think he means if he blurs out the trademarks on one picture and submits it as commercial, and keeps the other one unedited and submits it as editorial.

It is done all the time on all sites that allow editorial content.

Don't know where they stand officially on the matter, but it seems to be OK.

Keep in mind that editorial images have a much lower sale potential.
Personally I don't do editorial at all and consider it a waste of time: they never sell multiple times per file, while what I am looking for are best sellers that sell over and over. Others will probably disagree with this

That is not quite true. And how would you know if you don't do editorial? They might have lower sales potential but they are not a waste of time.

Several of the Pond5 all-time bestsellers are editorial clips. That means MANY sales. Many of my 4k sales have been editorial. I just wish more sites would accept editorial clips.

There are so many uses for editorial clips - not everything produced is a commercial.

Take a cityscape with lots of advertising, logos etc that have to be removed.

You can upload a "before" as editorial, and an "after" with the logos etc removed.

But why would you want to?  Do you think some people prefer to have images with all the logos in?  That limits the usage so I think would not sell as well.  It would be interesting to split images of a cityscape and try it both ways to compare, but I always just submit the cleaned-up versions.  I have sometimes submitted very different images with logos to Alamy but they almost never sell in my experience.  I suppose you could look on SS at popular and see if any with logos are near the top to answer the question.

Agreed about cityscapes...best to remove all trademarks.

With my airplane shots I prefer to leave the airliner in as easier to sell since buyers will want to refer to that specific airliner. I do have some generic logo-less airplanes and they do OK.

Because editorial requires it...for example if a magazine was doing a feature about a city etc. Different uses.May not sell as well but if you are going to prep the image theres almost no additional time in doing a non cleaned up one too.

You bet. Stock images (for commercial use) look very weird when used in news/feature articles precisely because there are few recognisable faces and no logos.

The photo that has made me the most money in stock is an editorial image. It has sold multiple times. It's my No.1 top earner on SS. It shows an accident scene in which emergency services were called over (I won't go into further details.)

"Multiple" just means "three or more"

This is "micro".
Macro works another way while some Editorials do make $$$$ per month alone

Try selling the editorial version (not removing logos or trademarks) in Alamy or Getty

Getty needs image exclusivity (including sisters and similars), if you can even get in to Getty.
You could try the editorial version on Alamy, but be sure to make it 'RF - Editorial only' if you have it on e.g. SS as RF.

For whoever may be interested, I just wrote a blog post on turning the right editorial images into commercial images, which tend to be generally much more valuable.

I'm uploading this image today to Alamy (RM). It shows a Ferrari on a upper-class London street which works way better as an editorial than as a commercial as I want the Ferrari logo to be present. This could be used in all sorts of news pieces, especially as now (and for some time) there's a backlash against expats using London as a tax haven.

fk micros, no way in hell am i submitting this image to them.

Even without the logo you'd need a release to use that image commercially.

True, I have a similar where the car isn't so prominent and the focus is on the building. It could probably pass for a commercial after a little bit of work.
