Sorry Jan, new uploads are hit and miss.  Better content, fewer downloads.

Yap... The new content that i added is selling bad... but the summer girls and concepts from last summer is selling very good on all agencies. It's all about the season. ;)

I have 222 images online on Shutterstock and 83 sales this month. Last month I had 230 sales with 200 images. In november also 230 with 190 images. I think if you shoot more concepts your sales ratio might go up.

I have 900 pictures and get over 500 downloads a month. I take a lot longer to make pictures now as only my very best work has any chance of selling. New stuff can sell well but has to be a lot better than what's there or very original.

Vector portfolio - Approx 400 images - 1500+ DLs per month.

i just started submitting my vectors at SS last month. about 70 vector files accepted in half a month got me 200 dl's.

this months stats should give me a clearer picture. It is good to know my files are getting downloaded here but i cant help feel like a cheap whore at .25 a download but this is the current situation with sub prices. Like they say, concentrate on the bigger picture which is the revenue.

On the other hand i am at 18% at istock and my downloads there get me $3-4 from my vectors at indie prices which still beats on demand and the rare single download prices i get from SS.

It is still a relief to know that i am not bound by the shackles of one company.

This is a question that a lot of new folks ask thus I have a rough formula based on my stats (Below average photographer at best, photos only, no special area of expertise)

Here it what I have seen- now most of the sales are from the 25 a day download section thus cannot predict the monthly $$ amount. Also mileage may very per artist  :)

Portfolio Size -    Monthly Sales
350            100
700            200
1,050         300
1,400         400
1,750         500
2,100         600
2,450         700
2,800         800
3,150         900
3,500         1,000

Given that this was a discussion that occurred in 2013, I was curious to see if this was still accurate for most (give or take).  Thoughts?

That's about right for me.

Lots more downloads at the lower portfolio end, lots less at the upper end (probably as much due to the portfolio to total images for sale ratio as anything else). There was a sort of nice correlation between new uploads and sales at first - up to 1000 images or so, and then there wasn't. In fact despite new uploads (although not at any blistering pace) I have less downloads now than I did in about 2008 with 1/4 to 1/3 of the portfolio - mostly taken with a point and shoot. Thankfully the $ have gone up, but nowhere near the increase in pictures or quality.  Since many of my sales still come from old pictures I have no idea how the numbers stack up now.

That looks perfectly linear. My sales went up exponentially with my portfolio size.

I heard somewhere that good ratio approach is one download for one photo at port.
So 300 photos to 300 downloads (SS). Quality of the port is important and content too. One port with photos about people or models I thought works better than other. For customers RF with models are very sweet.

With 670 something photos, I get around 120-180 downloads a month. More when i upload regularly.

But how much i make depends on the mix of larger licenses, the subs don't amount to much.

And there is nothing I can do to make sure I get more extended or higher licenses, the higher price downloads are scattered randomly over all content types, there isn't a specific subject matter that attracts more of them. Number of downloads, yes, but not specifically less subs and more higher price points.

I upload to an agency and invest in shootings in proportion to the amount of money I expect to make.

So how well and at what price point an agency can sell my files determines what type of content they get.

I can create content for all price points, but I have been doing this for a long time.

So for me there is no "my very best"  content, it all has to fit the market you are trying to sell into.

It's not just a number's game. It matters a lot what kind of content you upload. With 600 photos+clips online, I get close to 1k downloads on SS:
May: 941
April: 946
March: 1026

Unless you are deleting files, that is a poor trend. Especially if you are uploading a lot...  I guess deleting files is going to hurt your long term sales trends too.

Still, it does matter a lot what content you have and its placement in the searches.

I can't upload more than 2-3 photos/week, since I only make photos during the weekend. And I don't upload the same subject shot from a gazilion angles.
April was the $ BME despite the lower number of dls. It's hard to call it a "trend"
And the topic is about port size vs dls, not trends
