The best football player ever, Pelé, turned 70 today.  A phone company produced this video showing him at 70 playing for the Brazilian national team against Argentina, scoring a goal from the opposite field - the one thing he never managed to do in his 1283 goals.

Madelaide-  What a wonderful video! Thanks for sharing that. I had the honor of photographing Pele when he was in New Haven at the Yale bowl in 1976. I was a 18 year old kid, this was my first assignment for a sports magazine, and I was scared to death. Pele was kind and understanding, and took extra time to make sure I got a good shot. I'll never forget it.

I remember him when I was growing up. I bet he would still kick my arse in Soccer today.

What a great story, jbarber!

I remember having read, at the time of the World Cup in Italy in 1990, that Matthäus, the German player, had met Pelé when he was a little child and Pelé visited the sports factory (Puma or Adidas, I'm not sure) where his father worked. He held Pelé's legs and said "I want to be like you".

It always amazed me how Pelé is known everywhere. Wherever I go, when I say I am from Brazil, often his name comes to the people's mouths, be it in Fiji or Morocco.

Unfortunately I never saw him play live, but my early football memories is the World Cup in Mexico in 1970, when Pelé scored some important goals and helped our team achieve its third world championship. Carlos Alberto, who was the team's leader then, also appears in that video (he talks to Pelé in the interval between the 1st and the 2nd half).

 Hi madelaide,

My Favorite ever. He was my idol when I was a young player, I am staring at a 40 year old ball signed by Pele as I type. It sits on my work desk and I rub it for good luck before a game. A true gentleman of the sport if there ever was, what a great representative. It is hard to believe he is 70.

Best,
Jonathan
