Anyone have any suggestions on which is best, or what they have and why they like it or chose it?

Got a PS3 for xmas three years ago, one of the first generation ones, 40GB HD.      The hard disk failed a few months ago (installing a new one solved it), then a week later the Blu-Ray wouldn't spin up the discs anymore.  Had to order a new laser for the disc drive from China - I have never seen such a confusing mechanical contraption as the gears and guts of the Blu-Ray drive, was very lucky to have managed to install the laser without screwing anything else up.

I'm sure the newer generation PS3's are more reliable.. but it was a hit in my love of Sony products.

For the price though, you can't beat the PS3.. a proper standalone drive is generally more expensive and isn't half as useful.

PS3 is generally more versatile that an ordinary BluRay player. I would go with it. HTPC might be a great solution for those who don't mind maintaining and tweaking it.

One thing to consider is how noisy they all are. I've heard of some people complaining about PS3 being pretty noisy, and HTPCs are usually on the noisier side too. In that regard, an ordinary player might be better.

I've got a PS3 and I can't say I've noticed any noise problems at all when playing blue ray films, one thing though - it is essential to buy the additional remote control.

I'd go with the PS3. I hardly play games on mine anymore, it's mainly used as a BlueRay and streaming media player. I have the 1st gen 60gig models and haven't had any of the problems zymmetrical has had. The downside is that the additional remote is a bluetooth remote which wont work with standard universal remotes.
