Best movies I have watched in movie theatre for the past year or so: The Artist, The Descendants, Carnage, Drive, A Separation...

I watch a lot of movies, mostly old ones. I have a soft spot for film noir movies :)

"KILL THE IRISHMAN" thehe

Irish flick with Farell? then I would prefer "Ondine".
And while we're talking about McGregor, check m both out in "Cassandra's Dream" where Farell is more paranoid then ever.

Alright a few more 2011/2012, I'm avoiding flicks like "Drive", "Warrior" and "Haywire" because they are borderline but I still liked them.

- A Dangerous Method
- Shame (for you Lisa, you'll understand why within the first few minutes)
- A Separation
- Another Earth
- Rundskop (Bullhead)
- Guilty
- Headhunters (not for the weak stomack)
- Limitless
- My Week with Marilyn
- Perfect Sense
- Nobody Else But You
- Sleep Tight
- The Flowers of War
- The Guard
- The Last Lions
- The Rum Diary
- This Must Be The Place
- Tyrannosaur
- War Horse
- Water For Elephants

There, I hope at least one of these can entertain someone here, enjoyl!

One of my all time favorites has to be "Enter The Void" but you'll have to be very open minded, if you are, prepare for one big trip.
If you are into fractals (I've seen quite a few in stock) then do not even hesitate to watch this!

Take care
Wim

I'll second you on My Week with Marilyn, and Cassandra.  I haven't seen the others, but Shame and Kill the Irishman are both in my Netflix queue already. Now you've piqued my curiosity about Shame, so I'll bump it to the top :)

Speaking of Kill the Irishman, Ray Stevenson, its star, also stars in the TV series ROME, with Kevin McKidd, which is EXCELLENT.

If you 2 like this type of movies, that I'd recommend the figher (2010), a bit more of a drama, but one of the best IMO. And since we're talking about a Christian Bale movie, I really liked the machinist, dark drama, he lost dozens of kg just for that role (500 kcal/day), didn't want to use make up, lighting, editing to make him look thinner since it wouldn't be that authentic, nor his state of mind would be right (I couldn't agree more). He even collapsed a few times during the filming, due to exhaustion and malnutrition, his energy levels were just too low at times. His acting was brilliant in that movie. Another piece of great acting by him was in harsh times.

Yup "The Machinist" is also one of my all time favorites, good choice Wut.
Another fav with bale: "American Psycho"

American Psycho -Business Card Scene (The video's owner prevents external embedding)

I think if we would all get together it would probably be like that lol!
Did you know he was the kid in "Empire of the Sun"? I never knew until recently.

Another special one from Caspar Noe...just watched it yesterday.
As you may know, Caspar Noe is not very light stuff. His toughest movie was "Irreversible" with a 10 min. violation scene with Monica Belluci which was quite shocking. 200 people left the theater in Cannes when the Movie was presented.

However, the new one is "Enter the Void". It deals with dying, life after death, DMT (a strong psychedelic) and the story follows the Tibetan book of the dead. Heavy stuff and not for everyone.

I saw this movie awhile back so not new at all. Couldnt finish the movie as i couldnt really get into it but i loved the crazy intro to this movie. So did Kanye West, since he totally copied it. or should i say hype williams the director for the video.
ENTER THE VOID - Opening Title Sequence
intro... goto middle of video
Kanye West - All Of The Lights ft. Rihanna, Kid Cudi
video goto middle of video

On a different note, im curious how much everyone pays for a movie ticket at a theatre in their country. I pay around $15 for a standard film and $18 for an imax 3d film. nyc

Not too many comedies represented in this thread.

So here's my favorite comedy of the last 10 years or so:  In the Loop.

Side-splitting, very sharp and intelligent tale of government hawks in the UK and US conspiring to make the case to go to war in Iraq... probably not too far at all from the truth.  Peter Capaldi is amazing in this... one of the best comedic performances I've ever seen.  He needs to be in more stuff, at least in things people can see outside the UK.

If you see it and like it, check out episodes of The Thick of It, the UK series that preceded the film.  They're available on YouTube (last I checked) and are equally fantastic.

The best beatdown scene I've ever seen. One really has to watch non-Hollywood movies to see something different, fresh, to experience great photography, not just a ton of meaningless special effects (notice how putting a bullet in a car always sets off a huge explosion lol, absurd really). Decent movie too

Here is a 2009 movie I caught on netflix. Very thought provoking I thought.

The Man from Earth: An impromptu goodbye party for Professor John Oldman becomes a mysterious interrogation after the retiring scholar reveals to his colleagues he is an immortal who has walked the earth for 14,000 years.

Many ppl are fascinated with this movie, though I can't really see why. It's good, but not that good.

Another similar drama, though this one is happening in a single room for the whole time. Great dialogues and acting, Tommy Lee Jones surprised me. IMO it's better than the man from earth http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1510938/

If you want something light and a bit of a laugh, watch City Island if you haven't already.  It's about a dysfunctional family.  It's not a movie I'd typically go out of my way to watch but it was worthwhile.

I like it I think because it is sort of a verbal chess game. Sci-fi without special effects. Kind of like a Sci-fi story around a campfire. Simplistic but intriguing. I think thats what kept me interested the whole time.. then there is the ending.

Nope.  Just didn't get around to making the post.

I think you have a decade or two on me Warren.  I suspect the issue of dementia is weighing more heavily on your mind than mine :)

How about some food movies? The Big Night (1996). And, of course, Chocolat.

Wut,

A rather late response here, but I have seen The Fighter and it is great. I also saw The Machinist and it is one of my favorite all time movies. Another lesser known Bale movie that I really liked is The Prestige. But I watch everything he is in and he is always very good.

Hugo is another 2011 movie I thought was very good.
