Long weekend. We went for a day trip to Sonoma. I was playing with my daughter when I heard a sound breaking glass. My wife dropped my camera from a bench to concrete ground. First time in over 10 years protective UV filter I got on all of my lens really worked and saved equipment. I could not remove filter after that but camera and lens seemed to work fine for rest of the they. When we returned I went to local camera store and they had to cut the filter frame to remove it. After cleaning I bought another filter a put it back on my lens.

Cheap insurance :)  Buy a uv filter or get rid of wifey...

Lenshood is also pretty important.

I'm embarrassed to say that I dropped by camera about 6 months ago and broke the UF filter.  That was the only damage.  Put my first UV onto a lens back in 1969, and haven't had a lens since without one.

I was pissed at my 4 year old for knocking my camera and breaking a $40 lens hood.  Then I realized it could have been the $1500 lens and I was happy.

My girlfriend was in New York with her Rebel and they smashed the UV filtre.  Since she knows absolutely nothing about that camera, she kept on walking around taking photos anyway and I'm amazed at how well they turned out with this shattered piece of glass on the front.  You see she's a 6 figure finace wizzard but not bright enough to remove the shattered piece of glass from the front of her lens.  I did it for her when they got home and blew out the shatters - amazingly, the lens seems perfect.  God, she makes me laugh, one of the smartest chicks I know - but....

I always use a filter, but the only day I let the camera fall (I was leaving the car thinking I had the strap on my neck), the lens broke on the connection to the camera.   :'(
