Ok so I'm sitting outside on the deck taking a break and see this little spider .. then I take a closer look and thought what . is this? It's really small .. smaller than an eraser on a pencil. At first I thought it had a dead bug hanging off of it but it actually just has a funky body with spikes coming out of it. For the record I'm in missouri, USA .. most spiders here are normal little spiders. Anybody know what this type of spider is called or am I living too close to the nuclear power plant?

I've seen verrry similar spiders in the rainforest in Colombia...dont know what they're called though :(
Maybe this little one drifted off a little, or came by banana boat?

in that case I'm going to stop buying bananas ... here's a top shot of the little freak. It looks like he has two little holes in his back .. no idea what those are for.

It's some type of spiny orb weaver. Maybe this one.

That's crazier than the ones I had found under my front doorway, on my deck.   http://www.fcps.edu/islandcreekes/ecology/daring_jumping_spider.htm

Still, I whip out my can of raid really fast on these guys.  They freak me out.  They're fast little buggers, too - one day I came home and almost touched one - it was hanging underneath the shiny gold doorknob, and just at the last minute I saw its leg in the reflection against the doorknob plate.  The garden hose fixed him...then I stomped him like a startled school girl.

LOL you wanna talk about a scared little school girl you should have seen me last month .. I woke up and all I could see was something blurry in front of my eyeball .. oh yeah a big one was hanging less than an inch from my eyeball .. I had to push my head back into the pillow to slide out from under it real fast. All I had was light from the TV so I just grabbed my shoe and started beating my pillow ... and Lisa slept through the whole thing  ;D

That is one freaky spider...I don't think I would want to know what the holes are for either.  What ever, I think your spider is mutated.

It's Spined Micrathena - Micrathena gracilis, female, and it's completely harmless to people.

I would have a heart attack and/or nervous breakdown if I ever saw one of those spiders alive and anywhere near me.

I have my own system for killing spiders (in the house) - as soon as I see one..... I let out a blood curdling scream and freeze until my boyfriend brings a shoe to kill it or my Italian Greyhound eats it.  If my boyfriend is not home and the spider is where my dog can't reach it... I let out a blood curdling scream freeze for a couple moments and then get my super super hold hairspray and nail it till it falls to the floor where I hit it with a shoe in a manic frenzy until it basically disintegrates.

There are several little spiders I don't mind much.  I even raised one once.  ;D

Now, this one is a bit scary, and I wouldn't like it near me either.

I will correct my statement from above. If it can cause you a heart attack and/or nervous breakdown, than it's NOT completely harmless to people :D

Oh I did just that yesterday. :) I was coming back from Mt. Diablo here in California. Suddenly I saw a huge spider crawling across the road. I pulled to the right in the last moment to avoid running over it. The spider was as big as tarantula, it's a trapdoor spider. Too bad I couldn't stop my car there to take a picture. :) This is a link to show you how it looks:

Pretty cool! I think I've seen the trap door spider on nature shows. I have spiders all around my house.

My wife's relatives are from Missouri. From what it sounds like there are no such things as little spiders there. I've heard mosquitoes are the size of birds.  :)
