"I still like my crop sensor for "getting closer" to pictures at events, etc, though"

thats funny, because you can do the same with a full frame camera and just crop the photo, unless you use a 18mp crop sensor and need the full resolution image, then i can see the point

You will usually retain more detail from a crop sensor than a cropped full-frame image if the cameras are within a 10mp range.

For example, a 16mp GH4 has more detail than the 5D mk III cropped down to the same composition (photos taken from the same spot of course). And it's especially beneficial for filming since you can't crop in afterwards without turning it into mush.

a 36 million pixel is 16 million pixel resolution in crop mode...canon is 24 so it must be something like 8 i think.

Thanks everybody for your comments. As it's a public cafe, not sure they would be happy to see me with a tripod there but doesn't hurt to ask...

Let's see how these do, no harm in re-shooting another time.

What's the name of that wood you use?

Not sure, but the texture is interesting. Perhaps oak.
You might get away with a gorilla pod IF you can keep it steady or bean bag!

gorillapod is the best invention after caramel butter....it's the best think for a stock travelers and moving photographer...i remember in bangkok sky bar i attach my gorilla to the railing and shoot long exposure, many other times i used it. also it can take even a panoramic head and ball head together with camera.
