Title: Envato - Set your own price
Post by: stockVid on May 14, 2016, 08:33
Anyone know when you can set your own price on Envato (video)?
I need to find a P5 replacement asap.

I wouldn't expect Envato to be a good replacement for Pond5.  Could be a long time before they let us set prices and it could just be a way to get more people uploading before they go back to setting prices.  You will never get 50% for non-exclusive and you will have to compete with established portfolios with very low prices.

Hi,

Envato just announced they will allow us to set our own price on videohive starting from January 2018

Envato might be OK for motion graphic, AE templates or websites, but they are an absolute joke for video.
I would not touch them with a stick

As was previously mentioned, Early 2018 self pricing. They are moving all the marketplaces to self pricing, the only ones left to change are video and audio.
I don't think they are trying to get more content uploads, the wait time for review is already like 6-8 months...

That being said, they are consistently my best earner.

Me too. I'd agree with Brighton though...

AE stuff: Definitely upload there, probably the best place for buying and selling AE content.

Motion Graphics: Consider uploading there... sales are usually very good, and the volume of sales should be enough to offset the lower prices.

Stock Footage: That's up to you. Sales will probably be the same or a bit higher than elsewhere, but you'll probably lose out due to the lower prices. Could be one for the future once author driven prices have settled, and the review queue has calmed down a  bit.

I know that you have a lot of experience with Envato, so I trust what you say.
But for video they have an uploading system that was used by the Vikings. An horrible medieval torture banned by the Geneva convention. I have tried a long while ago to upload a few video clips there and I am still under intense mental treatment because of the brutality of the experience.
The results of the review will be notified to my grandchildren after they get married.
They are the only agency that publish the number of sales. If I go to a popular topic that I shoot regularly and check for the best seller, the number of sales is less than what I sell elsewhere for more than ten time the price, and I am not a very big seller.
So I also question the amount of sales there for video footage

Use the new upload tool! It's officially still in Beta (has been for a couple of years) but it works really well and is up there with the best of the rest. No need to make thumbnails or preview videos/images, simultaneous uploads, direct upload from Dropbox etc. If you don't have access on your account, you just need to drop an email to an address that I can't remember, but will find, and they'll turn it on for you.

And Author Driven Pricing was released this week, so you can set your price from $4 to infinity. Due to the overly complicated way that fees are calculated, you also get a higher percentage cut the higher you price your items. Likewise, you get a lower percentage cut the lower you price your items... so hopefully that should minimise price dumping.

For example.... price a clip at $99 and you'll get:
$64.56 to $84.00 if you're exclusive
$43.20 if you're non-exclusive

Price a clip at $10 and you'll get:
$4.37 to $6.12 if you're exclusive
$3.15 if you're non-exclusive

Price a clip at $4 and you'll get:
$0.62 to $0.87 if you're exclusive
$0.45 if you're non-exclusive

What do you mean - the new upload tool does all of that for you (the previews, etc?)

Yeah, before you had to make a 80x80 thumbnail, a 590x332 preview image and a 960x540 preview video... zip them all up and then upload. Only once you've added the title, description, categorised the clip and submitted it... can you then upload your next clip.

Now you can upload clips simultaneously, all the preview assets will be generated automatically (with the option to override if required) and it'll auto-populate the duration, resolution, frame rate, encoding etc. Kind of what you'd expect for uploads in 2018!

Interesting. I found out I have to 'apply' to have that activated though? Have you had any issues with review times (someone on the beta review thread said they had something in 'review' for 2 months, etc).

Two months if you're lucky... although it does seem to be dropping slightly. Motion graphics seem to take a week or two.

Huh. Good to know.

Is that "because" it is the new uploading/beta system? (I.e., would it be faster if I just stuck to the 'old' way of doing it?)

It may have influenced the queue getting so long, as it's so much easier to upload, but now the new system exists... they're all reviewed in order, whichever method you use.

I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, but this Medium article is near the top of google's search for "sell stock footage."

https://medium.com/@jakubgorajek/how-i-earned-my-first-150k-by-selling-stock-footage-77a4fa0ad1d2

It definitely made me reconsider whether or not it is worth it to contribute there, as it seems like he earned a good amount even at low prices.

Seems like it might have something to do with a rush to contribute.

Encouraging that they are giving an incentive now to keep prices high too.

Where did you find new upload tool, i cant see it on my contributor page?

If you go to upload and then choose stock footage from the dropdown, you should have the option to use the old or the new system. If you choose motion graphics from the dropdown then you don't get the option to use the new system.

However, something I've just found out which I wish I knew two years ago... if you select stock footage and go into the new upload page, you can then change the category from stock footage to motion graphics.

If you're still not seeing it on the stock footage option then it might not be activated on your account. I'll try and dig out the email address you need to use to request access. They'll then turn it on for you within a few days.

So what would you recommend for pricing your own clips, seems a fine line between wanting to increase prices without putting off potential buyers, who would buy clips here because it is cheaper than elsewhere?

Maybe they are also different kinds of clients to those who would go to Pond5 for instance?
Although I think that has been covered in a another thread.

I'm also curious about what price to set clips.  My prices are pretty high on Pond5.  4K=$200-300 HD=$100-150 wondering if that would be way to high for Envato.

Hey thanks for the info.  I'm attempting to give this a try but haven't seen the option.  I followed that link and requested the beta uploader but haven't had a response in over a week.  Do you remember if it took a while for you?

I don't like Envato at all. I had about 3000 stills on the site and  a couple of years ago they sent me a note and said I was not a good fit for their site. They then closed my account. It took a few months for them to pay me my balance.   Now the FU thing about it was I was selling about 100 bucks a month of stills with them. Not sure what their problem is but I would note trust this group.
Title: Re: Envato - Set your own price

The issue I seem to have with them is now they seem to have "so many" people submitting stuff, that unless you've been with them for a while, they seem to do mass rejections of content (which is VERY time consuming to upload due to their interface).

Envato are on the same level as 123RF and Motion Elements when it comes to video. Which means they are not competitive. Only Depositphotos and Alamy video could be worse.

That's because they will be gutter feeding, accepting peanuts for their video sales. Selling video under US$20 net per sale is just not a viable business model, even for a sole operator with relatively small overheads.

How many of these $20 sales are your calculations based on? Surely selling 2000 clips a month at $10 would be a viable business model?

Viable business models (when it comes to stock), have to be based on three things... price, commission rate, number of sales. One of those alone doesn't really tell you anything. Pepsi sell their cans for $1 or thereabouts.. That's 20 times less than $20 and they have massive overheads... but they do ok.
