Title: Is Ebay a Waste of Time?
Post by: PaulieWalnuts on August 18, 2017, 00:35
I have some prints listed there. Just put a camera there up for bid. Seems like nonstop drama. Winning bidders want to cancel orders constantly. Product is delivered but buyer suddenly decides they need the money for something else and want to do a return. Anybody else finding Ebay a waste of time?

I had more than 100 transactions (both sell & buy) over some years and never had a problem

I have had people with the winning bid never pay. And I always put "no returns" to avoid that hassle. But yes, it has become a pain in the a$$ dealing with people. I have sold a few things with no problems, though.

Still use it occasionally to sell and overall it's been ok except for a few awkward buyers! I've bought cameras, lenses, laptops, mac desktops and even the car I still drive now! The thing that stops me selling expensive items are the crazy fees (17% if the buyer uses paypal, which for me is every time).
It's what happens when you have a virtual monopoly, fun and profit for the user takes a nosedive.

I was selling a $5800 Nikon 300 2.8 on Ebay and nobody wanted to bid, they only wanted to "work with me without Ebay".  When I said no, I got an instant sale.  It didn't look right and since I am a problem solver by career, I was able to determine quickly that it was a scam.  Ebay did not want to reimburse me the money I paid to list it and I had to call them and raise holy SH!T.  They finally gave me my money back and I listed it again.  Got the same thing. A bunch of people wanting to deal direct and not through Ebay or asking for special favors like sending it to a different address than what is on Ebay (FLAG).  I let the auction expire and haven't used Ebay since.

Yeah I've had stuff like that too. Same type of stuff with Craigslist. I don't sell on Ebay often but I'd say about a third of the time there's some problem to deal with.

Winning bidder wants to cancel right after they win. And then you to go through the cancel process and have to relist for another week.

Or they want to do a return because they impulse bid and really needed the money for something else. And even though the listing says no returns you know if you don't do a return they'll leave you a bad review. Oh yeah, and you can no longer leave bad reviews for buyers. Only "Positive, Report Buyer, and Leave Feedback Later".

Or they include a message requiring some unrealistic delivery date like in two days where I'd need to make magic happen, charge them an extra $75, and then rush to UPS five minutes before they close.

Just seems like a lot of Ebay buyers are a PITA to where I need to include a hundred lines of disclaimers and terms "No returns, No cancellations, No address changes, No exchanges, No stupid bidders, etc.

I no longer sell anything of value on ebay.  Way too many scammers, flakes, and wingnuts.   Not worth the hassles.

I've had good experiences selling broken items - parts not working. I sold my beloved Canon GL-1 in great condition too and no problems. I guess everyone has a different experience.

I say NO RETURNS as well and payment via PayPal ONLY

I sell everything Now on Craigs List. Cash and carry. sometimes in 30 Minutes. I can Pick where My ad is seen also, any city,or state.. Ebay is a PITA shipping and losing Money. You want what I have. bring the cash to the coffee shop and done. Of course Im in LA , Not out in the country. I've sold everything from threadmills,Bicycles, gym equipment,Lenses,Cameras, strobes. You name it. No hassle. No going to the shipping Place. Nothing. great.
I don't buy cheap chinese Items/Gadgets.. Maybe thats the deal. I've sold items for more than I paid for them....Face to face.

I bought regularly from eBay (stuff worth up to $400 dollars) and I never got scammed.
Even more, I find that sellers are very keen to preserve their good rating and often go out of their way to please buyers.

This is mostly how I feel. I've only had one bad experience selling on eBay but enough to keep me from using it except in special cases. If you are selling something rare or eclectic, eBay can be a better choice, but otherwise local sales choices like CL are better.

Used to trade used photo gear on eBay until 2006. Up until then it was fine. Then they started charging commission on the postage and later making it so that only buyers could leave negative feedback on sellers but not the other way around.
In the old days eBay was fun and easy now it's so burdenened with rules and regs that coupled with their policy of stealing the cash off your Preypal account and giving it to the buyer if the buyer claims they never received the goods, I never ever sell there now.
Got scammed once by a guy in China who gave an address in France (he bought miniatures of booze in France so it was probably a mate's address). Then he claimed never to have received it but he changed his eBay address to China the next day after I sent it to France. Had a screenshot of the two addresses but it made no difference to eBay/Paypal....they just removed the full payment from my account and gave it to him and then charged me all the fees on top.
Lost more than £200 on that little scam and have never used them to sell anything again.
I will still buy small things on eBay because the whole place is heavily weighted towards the buyer but they definitely don't deserve anyone's business as a vendor.

Good summary.  Today, I wouldn't sell anything of significant value on ebay.   Especially cameras.  When it's time to upgrade, I either sell the old one cheap to a friend or relative, or just trade it in at the store. Ebay isn't worth the risk and the hassle.

Sold a RED on eBay last year that I had for a few months and had a really smooth experience.

Higher priced items have given me less trouble than things in the $100 - $500 range.

Definitely a problem with buyers not paying. It can take weeks before you are able to re-list an item without forfeiting a fee to eBay.

Hopefully they’ll find a better system. Would be great if there was a way to better verify and filter who is able to bid on what items.

All said and done though I’m glad it’s an option.

I like eBay because it remembers me the microstock business: you can buy a Ferrari for $1

LOL do they still have the WW II motorcycles in a crate or Army surplus jeeps for $50? Is it up to Ferrari's and Corvette's now?

I've hesitated to answer this subject but I've had good and bad experiences on eBay, and many worse experience on Craigslist. Most of my eBay sales are smooth and without problems, now and then I get some buyer who's just stupid, or can't read English. I write very clear accurate descriptions, add many photos, explain anything I can, and rarely have a problem. Buying is where I had the bad experience.

People lie or leave out the truth. Better yet on eBay is sellers who make up the truth because they don't know what they are selling. Then if you write and tell them, they tell you to piss off and block you. Coins will be unsearched rolls, and we're supposed to believe that lie? Everything is rare even if you can go buy the same thing at Walmart. It's a mine field of liars and cheats, along with many honest sellers with things to make some spare cash.

eBay is also known as the biggest fence in the world for stolen goods.

My answer is caution, read carefully, don't allow new people to bid, and for me I block anything other than Canada or the US from bidding.

Craigslist I get the phony check scam over and over. They will mail a check for more and I'm supposed to ship the item and return the extra to them. The check clears and is found out to be a fake two weeks later. They have the goods and the money and I have to cover the fees and amount of the fraud check. Don't bother.

I'm not the first or last to write this. If it's too good to be true, it most likely isn't.

I still buy and sell on eBay often, with the buyer protection and paypal holding funds until satisfaction, things have gotten better.

I bought quite a lot of 1970s Nikon film camera gear from Japanese sellers last year and - with one exception - was astonished by just how good it all was. The Japanese really look after stuff (unlike the ex-Soviet countries). The one exception was an  incredibly cheap lens which turned out to have fungus.

I just sold 2 lenses on ebay that went off without a hitch, tho I was holding my breath the whole time. But I did have a couple people try to scam me. I always sell with the Buy It Now feature. Ebay also allows Make an Offer. So the scammers would make me an offer for more than I was asking. I googled it...apparently they pay with stolen credit cards. So I would have shipped the product, then would never have gotten paid. So I changed the limits on what can be offered. I guess the crooks think everyone is greedy and will take the higher offer. What a shame...ebay used to be good.

My experience of doing business on eBay is that it is full of untrustworthy buyers, scammers. eg, I was selling a Hassleblad digital camera and lens etc. I had an offer to send it to an address  in California, so I googled the address and it was a derelict building on the edge of town.
And in Aus, all buyers want to do is beat your price down, auctions no luck.
We have a thing called Gumtree which I think is world wide, that is not as bad but still issues with buyers.
In the past I sold an item to someone in the same city, during the sale process they winged about pricing because they had lived in singapore and how bad Australia was, then once the item was delivered they complained to eBay about the product and I did not get my money for weeks, after contacting eBay on numerous occasions and had some kind of restrictions on my eBay account. There was nothing wrong with the product this person was just horrid.
The way I do business on these platforms now is I send the item when the money is in my bank account, not just on PayPal or cash on delivery.
Really sad that a few bad people spoil it for evryone.

Problem with feebay and preypal is that even if you have removed the buyer's payment from your paypal account to your bank account, you're still not safe because your agreement with preypal says they can still raid your credit card account or bank account to retrieve monies they consider owed.

Dunno whether it is still the same way but the Germans used to do it best by completely avoiding all payments through preypal. You had to pay in Euro to an IBAN account number of the vendor. Once the money is on the account, the buyer will have great difficulty in getting it returned even when they're not a scammer.

Have you actually sold anything on ebay? i've sold over 20,000 items since 1999 and have only a few chargebacks without getting the item returned and those cases were due to faulty tracking on  intl deals.  in other cases, paypal did send a refund without return but did NOT charge me - they absorbed it - part of their seller protection policy
