Hello everybody!
I was just fiddling around the other day on P5 with their search engine and while doing that I've encountered one small problem (at least for me).
It shouldn't be a surprise that peeps try to get the best value for their money. When thay have to choose between for example 1080P clip priced at 30$ and a very simillar 4K clip at 55$ for 4K and 27$ for 1080P they would probably take the downscaled 4K version. But that's difficult...
I just wanted to say that if someone sets a price limit on P5 for example for 49$ he/she will only get results that are native 1080P or smaller. The search engine won't show downscaled 4K clips available in that price range.
What do you think about all of this? Personally it drives me crazy  >:(

First of all... selling 4k for under $ 100 is absurd. Second... if they'll need 4k, they will find it.

That still doesn't change my main point that 1080P downscaled from 4K isn't properly exposed...

I reported it as a bug more than 3 years ago. Have followed up a few times since. Still hasn't been fixed, so I gave up any hope of it being fixed a long time ago. Along with a couple of other bugs that have been more than 3 years without a fix.

Because 4k is so incredibly hard to produce and almost no camera in the world can handle it? Ethernet cables and wifi routers collapse under the pressure?

You price based on CONTENT. Not resolution.

A 4k clip of a duck should be cheap.

A 720p clip of an erupting volcano can be very expensive.

Sure, cuz your rent, equipment loans, software rent, monthly bills, and grocery expenses are price based on quality too?

Yes, they are priced based on quality for the most part.

But you confuse resolution with quality.

An enormous house with torn wallpaper, a rat problem and mold everywhere is not of better quality than a small apartment that's brand new with top-notch interior.

---

All I'm saying is that just because it's 4k doesn't mean it's a quality clip that should cost $100+. But naturally, a 4k version of an outstanding HD clip should be more expensive.

And let's not get into the whole "value your work" thing again... I know where the most $$$ comes from and that's good enough for me.  ;)

There are a lot of contributors undervaluing their (quality) work.

You don't know that since you don't know how much they make each month.

It's not spot on topic - but anyway:
have anyone of you ever tried to play around with your prices on P5 in order to experiment
on how pricing effects sales?
I know for myself that i price my clips relatively high compared to other when I search a subject I shot.
When I have something very special obviously I price it higher, but I never price 4K less than $150. And I get many 4K sales on P5.
When a potential buyer is browsing similar clips, no debout he will choose the cheaper one when quality is identical as far as he is concerned.
I always wonder what will happen if I mark down my prices 20%. maybe I'll see a 30% increase in sales??

I emailed the today about this, and got reply:

"Thanks for reaching out today!

We are indeed aware of this issue here, and we agree with you that it's not great both for the buyers or the artists. We are looking into a solution for this, but it seems to be a lot more tricky than we thought at first, so we don't have a timeframe for a fix at this time.

We do intend to fix this sooner rather than later.

Thanks for understanding our limitations here and contributing with Pond5."

Hope they fix this soon.

It's been a known issue for at least 3 years, probably longer. Always with this answer. Needless to say, it's not one of their top priorities.  :)

I know its a long term problem, but i think it is ok to complain to them all the time about it. Maybe they will speed things up a little bit :)

Haha, yes, one can only hope.

To me, this seems like something anyone with access to the database could fix in about 30 minutes. Or less.
