This might be interesting! I've got a response from support.

"The image search varies from person to person. We actually have a smart program that adapts to the viewers personal aesthetic so the keywords help but in the end they're just a description."

Meaning that you all might be looking at different images than I am when doing a search on Shutterstock. This makes it impossible to claim my statements!

if I search for eye it doesnt show spam titles

For more general searches it doesn't always seem the case but others are clearly in advance when using keyword spamming

This on for example: searching for "black cat" under BEST MATCH search

And there are many more examples! Since the last changes my income has been dropped by 30-40% and this may be one of the reasons!

I'm not talking about the "new" search tab I'm talking about the "best match" search tab!

Keyword spamming being rewarded

It looks like keyword spamming is being rewarded by the Shutterstock search. If you search under best match, images with a repetition of the search word in the title are pushed up in search. Here for example

https://www.shutterstock.com/search?search_source=base_landing_page&language=en&searchterm=frog&image_type=all

Almost every image on teh first page has frog at least two times in the title. This phenomena you can find for other searches too. I thought keyword spamming was not allowed and now it seems to be rewarded!
Something is wrong!

If Microstock goes down there are two things that will happen. Lower quality images will be replaced by cell phone photography. But the better and more creative photographers can go back to mid stock or macro stock. There will always be a market for high end photography. Nowadays micro mid and macro stock are overlapping to much. So in the long run it can be a good thing for the creative ones among us!

Adobe Stock / Re: Shocking Fotolia Earnings Drop
« on: December 18, 2012, 20:14 »
My views also dropped in exactly the same period! But I know exactly why this happened! It didn't have any effect on my FL earnings.
The sudden drop happened when they introduced the automatic zoom when you hover over the images. So nowadays buyers can see an enlarged image when hovering over the thumbnails. Before august 2011 they had to click on the image to see it.

My earnings on FL are still rising they are now 3 times the amount of last year and the year before I also had an increase of 300%

Musicians are also little guys! Getty, Alamy, Shutterstock, Istock, Corbis, Fotolia... are relatively big guys. It is their job to protect the market! It is in their but also in our favor!

Photo Critique / Re: Are these Images to "Red"?

You're welcome! I can't trust my eyes either because I'm colorblind, but by reading the LAB numbers I'm able to get them right.

The colors are indeed quite red! You can use LAB color values to check colors. Skin tones for caucasian people should give positive A and B values where the B is at least equal to the A or higher. For red haired, kids and natural blondes the B value may be a little lower than the A value.
Your models are dark haired so the B should be higher than the  A. The values on your images read approximately  L= 70 A=28 B=23 (first image) L=70 A=28 B=19 (second image) These are measurement on the forehead. Correct colors should be something like A= 23 and B=26

The LAB color system is the best for color correction. If you want to know more about it you should read "Professional Photoshop" by Dan Margulis or check his classes at Kelby training.com

I think that although it will still be difficult to claim an infringement, it will certainly help to reduce the amount of illegal downloads. Just the fact that these kind of laws exist and that more and more people are aware of them the better for us. I still think that one of the main problems we have with our struggle against copyright infringement is the fact that most people don't know that they are breaking the law. The more these laws come into attention the more people will be aware of copyright law.

High penalties for illegal music and video downloads in Japan. Why isn't it possible for images! If the music industry can use its power in such manner why can't the stock photography business do the same! It would be great if this could change in the future!

« on: September 16, 2012, 09:11 »
To my opinion categories can be quite important. Not that a lot of buyers search by category, but they can help to get more exposure through image linking, for example trough similars that show up for a certain image. I've written an article about the topic on my website. http://biginmicrostock.com/pages/advanced-microstock-selling/branding-and-image-linking-in-microstock.html

SS is an agency that require to upload constantly in order to mantain/increase sales. is not like DT or FT

My experiences in regard to the impact of uploading new content is totally different. I had several periods where I didn't upload for two months and it didn't have any impact on my sales at SS.
It's the feed the beast myth! I've got an article on it called "new content rules"

I don't think that giving images away for free is a good policy. You might think that submitting a couple of images for free can make no harm, but just as in microstock it is all about numbers. When ten thousands upload 10 free images than you have 100 thousands free images available. Those numbers really can affect sales.
