Newbie Discussion / Re: Shooting editorial - any point?
« on: May 24, 2016, 12:18 »
I upload editorial on SS (NOT news worthy, but copyrighted, restricted, no model release photos) They seem to sell just fine actually. Also their turn around time is quite quick (especially after hours) and their standards are not as demanding for RF.
An example that I thought would never sell but did...

I've done well with Fotolia with my admittedly tiny portfolio. Thing I like about them is that their payments vary, so I'm never quite sure how much I'm going to make. Unlike SS, who are almost ALWAYS .25. Just wish Fotolia accepted editorial...

That's what I'm saying! Oh well, until I hit 100 d/l's I guess that's the price.  :-\

Adobe Stock / 30 credit X license sale

A record for me (my payout was 6 credits) probably the best you can get as a entry level shooter on Fotolia correct? Anyone have anything similar?

I started uploading mobile stockphoto's while commuting, or during bored moments at work. And, I was surprised that sales started flowing in! Not big sales, I won't be selling the 5D yet, or quitting my daytime job yet, but it's fun to see sales coming in.
I'm using, in order of sales:
Shutterstock
Fotolia
iStock
Dreamstime
123RF
Stockimo
Twenty20 (no sales yet)
Thinking of using Eyeem too...

Weird thing about DT: I have between 100 and 200 on each agency (except Twenty20). But DT used to be my bigtime winner in sales, so I put all my effort in that portfolio, and uploaded about 450 at them. Sales (and views) were coming in regularly (not enough, but fun). So I made an extra effort and pushed my portfolio above 500 (37 now). Since then (2 months now), no sales anymore, and almost no views. Anyone else noticed this strange kind of behavior?
Luckily my iStock, FT and SS portfolios kicked off, so I put my effort there now.

Same thing here. Funny, Shutterstock has now exceeded Fotolia for in a very short period of time. Dreams time has been, to put it nicely, a big disappointment. Lots of views for many of my photos uploaded early, and like the previous poster, figured, this is the place to be! After my honeymoon period, very few views, no sales.
With SS, I really like the key wording, as they suggest really good key words. Mobile upload is easy, and they take editorial! Another thing is I feel that with SS, you are getting on the best stock site in my opinion, meaning the best quality photos are being posted, and that if you can get accepted there, your photos have a good chance of selling. I feel DT is too lax with their acceptance, taking many photos just to say "We're the biggest"

I upload to SS and FT and pics that get shot down there, sail right through on DT. Is that actually doing photographers a disservice, as these pictures will most likely not sell, or are they being smart, knowing that there may be a market for these photos?

Why are you spending time on pictures you don't think are good enough to sell?
I guess I'm of the mind that there's a hand for every glove, and that their editors have it the ok, then someone, somewhere would want the photo. I guess not...

Tip for newbies on SS, make sure you are in the correct color balance! Sent in pics, got turned down. Sent same pics in after I changed the w/b and viola! Accepted! (And sold  :) )

I have 90 pics on DT and about 30 or so on SS (due to their strict standards) and about 30 on FT. I use the mobile apps to upload and keyword. I actually like the SS app for key wording the best as they will suggest really good keywords to use.

Got hot on SS as I now have 7 d/ls in 2 weeks, including a couple of on demand sales : ) (editorial) Sloooooowly getting there lol

All good! I do appreciate the comments. I treat every sale as a fun experience, not a make or break. Just happy and quite flattered that my work has found a home!

Thanks for the replies. Sold two today, so I guess there's a hand for every glove!

Just wanted to see what others thought. I have sold three photos on SS so far, but just wanted to get some idea if these photos will ever sell. Thanks in advance!

Used them all, or so I thought. Stockimo, Fotolia instant, snap wire, and The dreams time companion. Without a doubt, Fotolia is my fave. 8 sales in 2 months I've been on. (I am a newbie) so I was happy with that. Turn around time is good, but they don't take editorial, and you can't edit photo info after you upload. DT is really easy to use and has a VERY relaxed acceptance rate IMO. (1 sake there, 88 photos up, many views) Stockimo? Eh. No view counter, so you can't even tell if you're photos are being looked at and no sales for me so far.

Tried it and hated it. Impossible to level up and the challenges were basically all won by high earning pro photogs. After a few months I threw in the towel.

Hi, I am also a newbie. You are doing well. Your post gave me hope. Most of my photos are on Dreamstime. I started 2 month ago but have not sold anything yet. I have only 15 photos on there so far. Congratulations to your sales.

Hang in there! And good luck, you'll be fine!

I am a newbie, and I have to say SS has some of the toughest standards on MS. Pictures that I think will sail through are rejected. (Pics from same session go through) And pics that I don't think will get accepted, go right through! I don't get it.
My portfolio for what its worth...

I use the FT mobile app and have had good results. Easy to upload, easy to keyword, and so far some sales. Only bad thing, you cant change or add keywords after the photos are up, and no editorial. Other than that, good experience so far. Finally, almost all of my sales are from outside the USA.

« on: April 07, 2016, 10:13 »
Looking at over a week (Closer to 10 days now) for photos to be accepted or denied. Absolutely unacceptable IMO. Anyone else have this issue?

21
SS is truly insane with some of the reasons they deny photos. I've had photos accepted by other agencies no problem, then for some reason SS says no thanks. Even editorial content! Bit disappointing to be honest.

Adobe Stock / So far, so good

Been on Fotolia since the end of February, only about 30 pics up, but 8 sales so far. Nothing spectacular I know, but they are my best earner. For someone who does this a hobby, it's cool.

Nice! My best was around 1.25-1.50. For an XL. Then I get one for .32 for the same file also in XL.  :-\

Hello everyone, new to the site, been doing stock for a few months Istock, SS, Fotolia, and DT. Honestly shocked and amazed (and flattered) my snaps would have commercial use to someone.  :)
Fotolia has been very good to me (8 D/L's in the short time with them) Others? eh. Look forward to sharing more with everyone and learning as much as I can.
