General Stock Discussion / Property Release Responsibility
« on: April 22, 2010, 12:40 »
Let's say that a photo of statue/building/... that requires property release is approved by an agency without the property release.

If this would result into problem with copyright, who would be responsible? The photographer who took the photo? Or the agency for selling it without the proper rights? I could see both of them being responsible, but who would end up paying for the consequences.

Reason for asking: I had a photo that was deactivated for copyright reasons and it was told that it was approved my mistake. I accepted the decision and moved on. This happened over a year ago. Today I did a search for the same picture and I see almost identical photos for sale by other contributors. Should I inform the contributor/agency?

I would like to hear your thoughts.

EDIT EDIT EDIT
I have changed the title of the thread to something more useful and less offensive.
The old title was: "Very unprofessional behavior from Fotolia and Stockxpert".
I hope it doesn't confuse people here.
EDIT EDIT EDIT

So I am trying to become exclusive at iStock so I deleted all of my images from all sites I SINGED IN with.

I clicked the exclusivity button and I just got rejected because I have some live files at PixMac:
http://www.pixmac.com/picture/autumn-lake/000004291716

I always despised the affiliate sites of fotolia since I never knew how many there are,...

But this is REALLY annoying!

Thank got iStock was pretty cool about it and they just told me to take care of it and then let them know.

ANY OTHER SURPRISES FROM OTHER SITES THAT I SHOULD KNOW OF?

Thanks a lot guys. If it weren't of this forum I wouldn't even know that it was fotolia.

See a reply below. I found also some of my files at photos.com (affiliated with stockxpert). Going exclusive with iStock turned out to be lot more difficult than I anticipated.

Dreamstime.com / How to disable whole portfolio on Dreamstime?
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:36 »
I would like to disable all of my images since I want to go exclusive on iStock.

I contacted dreamstime to do it for me and this is what I got:
"Thank  you  for  contacting  Dreamstime.

We cannot disable the images for you. Please disable them from your end.

If you want to disable your whole portfolio, please note that there are some rules to be observed.

http://www.dreamstime.com/terms#contributors

Contributors are required to keep at least seventy (70%) percent of their portfolio online with Dreamstime.com for a period of at least six (6) months. You may disable all files older than six months from the date of review at any time. You will be allowed to disable a total of thirty (30%) percent of your total images submitted within the past six (6) months. Images that were disabled and then enabled again will be counted as new submissions, no matter of their original upload date.  "

I am OK with the rule and I haven't uploaded anything in the last 6 months. BUT, is there any way to easily deactivate all my files at once??? I don't want to go through all my files one by one. How did you guys do it?

Because of recent development, I (and I assume a lot of other people) am now considering iStock exclusivity little more seriously.

Here is a list of the major sites and how to delete your portfolio. PLEASE, if you think that any of the information below is incorrect, don't hesitate to correct me.

SS:
Just click opt-out from shutterstock at anytime.

FT:
Can remove your images at any time.

DT:
Uploads older than 6 months can be deleted at any time. Uploads newer than 6 months can not be deleted (You can delete 30% of the new files but thats useless if you want to close your account).
So in conclusion, IN ORDER TO CLOSE YOUR ACCOUNT AT DREAMSTIME YOU CAN NOT UPLOAD FOR 6 MONTHS!

BS:
Every approved file can not be deleted for 90 days.

SPX:
Can delete images at any time.

123RF:
Can delete images at any time.

FP:
Can delete images at any time.

Honestly, I was not aware of the requirement on DT. Half a year is a long time. I am definitely not uploading to DT until I know what will iStock offer next week. If the offer is good and subscriptions take off, it will be a LONG wait. My last upload was May 5th so I still have 5 months left.
If I decide to go exclusive at the end of the year, I will keep uploading to SS (quick return on new images) and keep portfolios on the other sites. Then close all accounts at one time and click the button on iStock.

Dreamstime.com / Additional Format
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:35 »
Here is a dilemma:

I got an e-mail from Dreamstime and some buyer requested a RAW of one of my images.

What do you guys do? Is it worth it? Or you never should let go of the Raws? I remember that some person uploaded the raw and then she got 30c for a subscription download.

Another problem is that the image is a picture of a city buildings with some logos on them (they were removed from the Jpeg but I can't remove them from the RAW).

Opinions? Comments?

I just got this image rejected at SS:

Here is 100% crop of the sky:

Rejection: Noise--Noise, film grain, over-sharpening, or artifacts at full size.

Tech details: Canon 40D at ISO 100, processed from RAW. It was correctly exposed. Lens: 17-40L shot at f/8.
(I don't really know how else to improve my equipment other than buying a Full Frame camera).

So my questions:
What do you think is the rejection reason? Noise or artifacts?
I think I will downsize it to 4MP and resubmit it. Any other suggestions?

In general, what do you do with noisy skies (Do all DSLRs have some noise in the sky?)?
(I could clean it up in noise ninja but then I would probably get a rejection from iS for overfiltering.
So, what is your workflow for similar images (brightly lit landscapes and lots of sky)???

FYI: The image was accepted at iS and FT. I think SS is sometimes little too strict on the noise for their own good.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock - "Title" rejection
« on: April 20, 2008, 11:37 »
This is something new for me: rejection due to title.

Here is a very small thumbnail of the image:

The title is: Raw Walnuts Background
The description is: Walnuts still in shell right after they were collected from the ground (not washed, dirt and plant debris visible)

Here is the rejection reason: Title--Titles may not contain camera name, web addresses, or other unnecessary information.

So obviously they are talking about unnecessary information. I actually think that they meant the description instead of the title. I only write a long description to fulfill the stupid requirement at BigStock (7 words minimum).

So, what to do? Should I resubmit and cut the title and description to an absolute minimum?

Have you guys ever had this rejection???

P.S. I am not mad at SS, just a little surprised that they have a problem with the title.

iStockPhoto.com / Free Downloads on iStock
« on: December 01, 2007, 22:29 »
Hi,

here is my image:
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup.php?id=3717736

It shows one free download. I never offered the file for the free section.

So what does it mean?
Who is allowed to download regular images for free?

I don't really care about one sale commission, I am just confused and would like to know what's going on.

Thanks!

Bigstock.com / Price increase!
« on: September 19, 2007, 23:19 »
I logged on to BS few minutes ago and I had a message that the prices will go up in November. No more information given except that the price increase will be mostly for large sizes (same as IS and FT, they will probably introduce xSmall picture size).

The only question is weather the contributors will get a raise.

Shutterstock.com / Resubmission at Shutterstock
« on: September 19, 2007, 09:52 »
Is it just me or shutterstock has one angry reviewer? I usually have most of my pictures accepted but this week I got two entire batches (I always submit 3 in a batch) rejected. And I honestly disagree with the rejections because I think that the material is good enough.

So I would like to resubmit. Is it against the rules to resubmit the same EXACT image (absolutely no modifications)?

What do you guys do?

I was thinking of resubmitting the pictures and spread them out in between different batches.

Also, is it possible to have incorrect white balance for a black and white picture?

Thanks a lot!

StockXpert.com / New at Stockxpert - best strategy
« on: September 18, 2007, 14:36 »
Hi,

I have been going microstock for a year and I have been selling at IS,SS,FT,DT,BS.

I applied to Stockxpert a year ago and I was rejected so I didn't bother for a year. Then a week ago I applied again and now I am accepted.

So, I have about 300 photos that I would like to upload. What is the best strategy? Small batches (10 or so) or just use the 50 limit?
What is their current review time? Should I make each batch diverse (different type photos) or it doesn't matter.

I will appreciate all opinions.

Hey,

I just ordered the Canon Powershot A570IS and I am planning to use it as a everyday camera and probably occasionally use some of the photos for microstock.

So my plan is to take the 7Mpix photos and resize them to 4Mpix (or even less for iStock) to get rid of the noise. What is the best software to resize images to achieve good (noise-free/less) results for microstock?

Do you think that the results would be decent? I have the 20D with very good glass for serious work so if you think that it will look cr@p don't hesitate and let me know (I can take the truth).

Adobe Stock / Fotolia Ranking
« on: December 08, 2006, 11:46 »
I am sure most of you are aware of your numerical rank (all-time and last 7 days). I am talking about the number, not white, bronze,...

Is the whole list available anywhere on the web site?

I don't see any practical use of this except bragging rights:)

I have 48 sales and my rank is 2658 (all-time). I would like to know roughly now many you need to be in top 2000, top 1000, top 100 at this time (obviously this changes all the time).

(I like to brag to my friends:)

General - Top Sites / Extended Licences
« on: October 04, 2006, 15:59 »
Hi,

I just got my first extended license today at iStock and I got $30 out of it. That means that the buyer paid $150 for the license, which surprises me since it is pretty mediocre picture.

The funny thing is that I have the same photo at Fotolia and he could have had an extended license there for $10.
I didn't really think about extended licenses much before but today got me thinking (I have had extended license sale on FT before which gave me $3.3 each).

So here are the questions:
Since I make a lot more money at iStock from extended license should I cancel the option of extended license at other web sites so customers go to iStock and I get a big payout?

Why did the guy pay $150 for the photo at iStock if he could have got it at FT for $10? (laziness to search around or the license is better at iStock)?

Are you offering extended licenses at all web sites?

Thanks,

Matej
