General Stock Discussion / How to Leave guide
« on: September 16, 2013, 07:53 »
it might be helpful to have some kind of guide on how to:

* disable files at various sites
* shut down entire portfolio at various sites

they are all different and it's even more time consuming to disable a file at some of them than it is to upload.

I am ditching all the small players and it's proving to be quite painful.

anyone got any easy advice for:
Cutcaster, Canstock, Veer, Stockami, Pond5 etc....

had to chuckle today when I was looking on google maps, using the camera view thingy, and I noticed the image was watermarked with "2013google".

Adobe Stock / is Fotolia changing the way they report sales?
« on: July 01, 2013, 05:22 »
I've gotten a few emails lately that report a sale of eg, M or L for .27 which was pretty disturbing, but when i log in it appears this is my credits earned and not the sale price.

eh?

Photography Equipment / Monopod advice
« on: June 01, 2013, 00:44 »
I'm heading off overseas in a few months and as much as I would like to I won't take my Manfrotto tripod so as to reduce luggage in the hire car. I've been wanting a monopod for ages so this trip will finally force me to purchase one.

But, which one? my local camera store has the Manfrotto 294A3 for $89. It only weighs 53g and is compact at 59cm. however for the same money i can order online elsewhere and purchase the 680B (3 or 4 sections).

We do get slightly diff versions in Australia versus elsewhere and one tip the clever geek informed was that the 294 has a 'standard' chair foot rubber size, meaning when the bottom rubber inevitably gets lost, i can go to my local hardware store and buy a replacement for a few bucks, whereas the other sizes are european and so unlikely to be as easy to find.

Of course i'd love the cool one with the squeezy grip, and I know choosing a tripod on its weight is wrong, but in this case i've got travel weight limits to consider. I'm not buying a head for it either, as I want it to slip inside my suitcase with ease.

Adobe Stock / keywording announcement - Fotolia
« on: April 25, 2013, 19:00 »
did everyone get the email about keywording? Or is it something that goes out randomly?

Quote
Our search engine takes the order of the keywords into account as a way of determining the relevancy of each keyword. The most relevant keyword must come first, then the second, etc.

blah blah blah and then drops this small task
Quote
if your previous content was indexed with keywords in alphabetical order, no problem! You now have the possibility to review the keywords ordering for validated files. Go to "Manage my Files" when you are logged in, and click the "edit" link on the content you wish to review. Change the order of your keywords according to relevance, as stated above; validate the conditions; and click the "Submit and finish" button. Your content will be re-indexed and will appear to relevant search requests, ensuring you more sales.

gah!! I've got a small port and even I groaned at this.  I'm presuming the majority of us have kw in metadata so they just go in alphabetically. sometimes I grab 3 and click "move to top", sometimes i don't, especially when I use the indexing/batch process feature.

but I suppose I should do it, as FT have ensured me I'll get more sales. :o

Alamy.com / new forum at Alamy...
« on: April 22, 2013, 07:00 »
I'd only ventured over there a few times but never found it to be my cup of tea. (I can only handle one lot of edgy, opinionated, bossy creatives, and here they at least like microstock).

I do love this quote from Alamy Admins:
Quote
With this in mind, we've now made it compulsory to be a registered Alamy photographer before you can post. Although you'll be able to pick a forum alias the first time you log in, you'll need to log in using your existing Alamy website credentials and your profile on the new forum will contain a link to your image collection on Alamy. We believe this will promote a more honest and less hostile environment. Also, users are now able to give (or take away) reputation points on posts and users. Again, we hope this will promote a more positive and overall constructive place for discussion.

of course we all fear the backlash of speaking out (hello iS!), so having some anonymity can be helpful, but I do think this transparency is a good thing overall.  There are quite a few mouthy types here who like to whinge, yet I've no idea if it's justified as i can't see their ports.

perhaps a "show me yours, i'll show you mine" policy could be implemented? :)

a new site?
Quote
DIIMEX is a global online digital media exchange, not an agency. Our goal is to provide an efficient and transparent marketplace for the sale of media and advertising content.

RM, exclusive, auctions?

I'm not sure the nitty gritty terms are good, perhaps someone with better legalese can have a look?

Shutterstock.com / categories... wedding?
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:23 »
so just doing up some random wedding things (bouquet/cake) and there seems to be no category for this.

misc?
I'd be loathe to use Holidays as that's just wrong
Food is wrong
Vintage is my secondary option, but I don't like to spam.

shall i presume categories are just a waste of time, like everywhere?
do any designers use them?

I did in fact search here and returned zero results, but a google search yielded plenty of results for this site. the search box here is not so crash hot, just sayin'

iStockPhoto.com / free downloads are XXXL?
« on: January 03, 2013, 19:12 »
just followed a link of the freebie of the month from iStock and the dl is available for free up to the biggest size (11MB!). Is that normal? I thought freebies were only ever 72ppi blog sizes? (DT does this?)

I did an A-Z book for a charity recently so many of the shoots have also joined my stock portfolio. the Q is for Quilt was quite tricky and not a fun shoot. to my surprise i've sold 3 pics in the first week of uploading these pics - very boring quilt on bed, quilt on chair. Perhaps this will be their only sale?

similarly, on the way back home from the beach last week i leaned out and shot one of my dogs hanging out of the side of the car (our Defender ute), much to husband's concern (not for my camera; the dogs have fallen out a few times now). I've sold 2 pics in the first 2 days on SS. admittedly that 50c isnt' going to cover fuel costs but it's pretty neat to see sales so quickly.

What have you uploaded just because you had it, and then been shocked to have sold them (more than once)

Dreamstime.com / MR rejected for no phone number??
« on: December 12, 2012, 04:30 »
my model lost her phone and is between phones. she has no number. (how a 19 yo girl is surviving in this world without a phone is a mystery!) So my MR is missing the phone number and they've rejected it.

It's kind of ridiculous to think that you'll be able to contact her on that number in say, a year's time, because it's quite likely she'll have a different number by then anyway. Google & FB (or their future equivalents) will be how we find people, right?

so I can either:
a) fight it
b) wait for her to get a new number
c) put her old number... or any number ...

Off Topic / the Facebook governance vote

Where's Sean, he will know.

iStockPhoto.com / got my first 8c sale, feeling special
« on: December 06, 2012, 06:26 »
I know I have a small port but it makes me feel special to get one of these mythical 8c sales at last. Like another step to becoming a real microstocker.
I don't feel hurt, it was for a bg of bitumen road surface, surely there are so many of those they are only worth 8c?

If only a giant EL would follow, I've yet to be blessed with one of those.

http://www.petapixel.com/2012/11/07/canadian-photogs-now-officially-own-the-copyright-to-all-of-their-photos/

In Australia the copyright still goes to the person who commissions the work.
Except for freelancers (such as myself) anyone working for a newspaper/publication also don't own copyright.

What's the deal elsewhere?

General Stock Discussion / opt out of subscription?
« on: November 22, 2012, 18:07 »
Do any sites give us the option to opt out of subscription sales?

Seems to me that while they keep cutting our commission this would be a good way to give us back some control.

It hurts to see an image sold as "large" for $1.70 and then "XL" at 25c under subscription.

It's a defacto free section really.
