Photography Equipment / Insurance for camera & gear
« on: December 29, 2016, 20:49 »
Hi all,

Does anyone have suggestions for camera & gear insurance? I've been looking into Front Row Insurance Brokers (https://photographer.frontrowinsurance.com/). Does anyone have any experience with them or other insurance solutions?

For reference, I'm in Canada and I would have about $12k replacement cost in gear.

Thanks for any advice.

Hi all,

I'm thinking about getting the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens.  My main goal for this lens is to use as a "walkaround" lens first and stock second.  I've been told that it's not a very sharp lens despite the fact that it's an "L series" lens.

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Jean

Hi all,

I think I recall reading somewhere on this forum that on one MS site you could download your own photos (no watermark) for free.  So the site could, in theory, be used to store you photos....no, I don't plan on getting ride of my backup drives :)  I can't remember which site it was.  Does anyone know which site this was?

Thanks in advance.

New Sites - General / Anyone heard of Vpuzzler?
« on: July 17, 2014, 11:56 »
Anyone heard of Vpuzzler?  They contacted me via Facebook.  I haven't done much research on them, I was wondering if anyone had any experience with them.

Here is the Facebook message they sent me:

Hi,

My name is Marcin Roszkowski and Im the co-founder of a new media marketplace called Vpuzzler.com. Were currently gathering content in order to launch final version of our platform.

Im wondering what circumstances have to meet in order to have such professional portfolio as yours on board our project.

Were offering video (15-20 USD), image (1-9 USD) as well as audio (1-3 USD) in Royalty Free and editorial license.
Would be grateful for information from your side regarding the conditions of potential cooperation.

Would be great to hear from you.
Best regards,
Marcin Roszkowski

Hello,

Apologies if this was covered in another tread...

I am having difficulties with the SS Facebook Connect.  Has anyone been able to make it work?  And if so, could you please provide any tips/instructions.

Thank you.

Alamy.com / Alamy reverses course on fees
« on: November 05, 2013, 08:32 »
This just in...  the power of MSG?

Okay, hands up... we got it wrong and were sorry we messed everyone around.

We recently announced some changes to our payment terms. We lowered the payment threshold from $175 to $100, but introduced fees for some payment options. We completely underestimated the strength of feeling regarding the options that involved fees.

So, the good news is that you can forget everything we previously said. Were now moving the threshold down to $75 and there will be no fees at the Alamy end regardless of which method or currency you choose.  Well change the contract again but well be paying out on balances above $75, starting with the December payrun at the beginning of December.

This will mean more of you will get paid more regularly. We respect our photographers, youre important to us and we want to be fair.

Thanks

Flickr / Should I join Getty Images on Flickr?
« on: October 18, 2013, 13:53 »
I have received an invitation to join the Flickr Collection on Getty Images.  According to the Contributor Agreement, all content would be on an Exclusive basis.  Normally, this would be an automatic "no" for me given that I am an indie on many MS websites.  However, most of my Flickr content is vacation/travel, etc, so most of it would not be content already on my MS websites.

The royalty rates are 30% for RM and 20% for RF.  However, I can't find a price list so I'm not sure what my average take would be.

Is this worth my time?  Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Jean

Hi all,

Does anyone have any experience selling books on Blurb?  http://www.blurb.com/

From what I understand, you can make a book then buy a copy which puts up for sale.  I've made photo books before for personal use (i.e., travel photos) through other websites, but they did not have a selling feature.  I might try them next time I make a book for myself and see where it leads.

Just saw this posted on Shutterbuzz:

It will be interesting to see how many more DLs that leads to.  I would think that many small businesses would just pirate images (some not knowing that you need to pay for images).

Hi all,

Apologies if this was covered elsewhere.

With several stock sites using keyword order in the search algorithm, I was wondering which software allows you to keep the keyword order on export?  I am currently using Lightroom 3 for my editing and keywording and it exports the keywords alphabetically.

I realize that I could do the work within each site's keywording area, but that seems tedious.

-Does Lightroom 5 support this?
-Is there a Lightroom plug-in that could do this?
-Other keywording software?

Any help is appreciated.

I have a small portfolio on SS and I have sold a few Enhanced Licenses (EL) so far.  When I sold my first EL, the file in question had a few downloads, but nothing spectacular.  After it sold as an EL, the downloads for that file increased dramatically.  The file has become one of my most consistent sellers.

I recently sold another file as an EL.  And just like last time, this was a file that had a few downloads.  Will I see a significant increase in downloads for that file now?  Perhaps selling an EL increases that file's search ranking on SS?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

New Sites - General / Stockami contributor update - March 2013
« on: February 26, 2013, 11:55 »
Just got this email from Stockami....

I was curious, has anyone had good experiences with them?  I started uploading a bit of files, but haven't really given them a chance yet.

80 percent royalties during March 2013
We are delighted to announce that during March 2013 we'll be offering 80 percent royalties to all of our valued contributors. That's double our previous rate and includes extended license sales too. Don't forget to spread the word so you can help us to help you get the maximum benefit from the bonus rate and we'll aim to do this on a regular basis in the future.  find out more

New permanent royalty rate coming soon
The good news doesn't end there. Towards the end of March we will announce our new, higher and permanent royalty rate.

Categories - with a difference
A few weeks ago we added categories to the site but with one very important difference. Categorisation is completely handled by us! We still have a number of files that still need processing but so far the system seems to be working well and we intend to improve and develop it over time.

EPS vector detection
If you do submit vector illustrations you may have noticed that we have implemented software to detect and display the correct EPS vector version. This means your customers know exactly what they're getting and the upload process continues to be free of unnecessary check boxes as part of our "keep it simple" commitment.

Newbie Discussion / New to the group
« on: January 31, 2013, 10:33 »
Hi,

Just wanted to introduce myself to the group.  Name is Jean and I am from Ottawa, Canada.  I've been doing stock photography as a hobby since the summer of 2012.

I have uploaded to all the top and middle tier sites as well as a number of low earner sites.  I'm working on adding more to my portfolio, but more importantly, trying to improve the quality of my shots.  So far I've had good results with SS and sales everywhere else, but not to the extent of SS.

I have stopped in to this forum as few times as a guest, but have signed up recently.  Any advice or thoughts, etc from the vets would be appreciated!

Cheers,

Jean
