Featurepics.com / Foreign tax identifying number
« on: January 17, 2015, 03:02 »
Hello to all,

I just received this email:

Dear Author,
During 2014 the Internal Revenue Service changed the rules and began requiring a tax id number (TIN) in order for a person being paid for US Source Income to qualify for reduced withholding rates due to tax treaties between our respective countries. With a valid TIN the withholding is to be at the tax treaty rate. Without the TIN the withholding is to be at the default 30% rate. The tax treaty rates vary from 0% to about 10%, so that is a very significant improvement over the 30% default rate.
For 2015 we will have to follow these rules for all payments; payments to persons without a TIN on file will have withholding at 30%. For 2014 we still have about a month before we have to report the payments, so it is not too late to do something about it. Please provide us with the Tax ID you use for reporting in your country. Better yet would be a US Tax ID, we recommend you apply for one because it may be required in the future. Please provide your local Tax ID immediately so we can include it in our 2014 reporting; it will be required for 2015 payments in order to avoid the 30% withholding rule.  Please use the  "My Tax Form" link under your account at FeaturePics.com

I don't know what am I supposed to do. Many of us do not have any Tax ID as we don't need it for tax purposes in our countries. And W-8BEN forms states "7. Foreign tax identifying number, if any (optional)".
It has not been requested by any other agency so far. I know that 30% of few dollars made on FeaturePics are not worth mentioning. However -  will other agencies require Tax ID soon or is it FP's nonsense?

Thanks.

Shutterstock.com / Shutterstock Payment - December
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:56 »
Has anyone already received "payment email" from Shutterstock (I mean ...earnings have been computed - and will be sent out by the 15th...) for December? It was supposed to be sent on January 2. I'm uneasy because of W8-BEN resubmissions. Thanks for info.

Image Sleuth / Embeddable images. Instagram strikes again.
« on: July 14, 2013, 05:22 »
I think that "Image Slauth" is right place for this. Instagram photos and videos are now embeddable.  I don't like it despite the fact that embedded photos appear with Instagram username and clicking leads to page on Instagram.

General Stock Discussion / Imgembed
« on: July 09, 2013, 16:40 »
Anybody heard or even used http://imgembed.com ?

Main purpose of this site seems to be to promote artists more than to make some serious money but generally I like this idea. Don't you think that similar way of licensing images could be the future of selling images for use on web sites and blogs? In theory no stolen images, absolute control over usage of images There must be some drawback but I'm not aware of any at the moment - if I leave out the fact that it can't work for print.

Software - General / Snapseed & copyright
« on: January 11, 2013, 03:56 »
Notice for those who use Snapseed app (I have version for desktop computers): Be careful before uploading anywhere - I found out that if you open image in Snapseed and save it then info about copyright in EXIF data for unknown reason changes to "Public Domain". I wrote to their support to explain this to me  but still no reply.
Well - as Snapseed was acquired by Google I'm not that surprised.

iStockPhoto.com / iStock earnings exclusives / independents
« on: January 04, 2012, 17:39 »
I wonder how would "Microstock Poll Results" look like if iStock would be divided to independents and exclusives. 7.2 vs 4?
I'm not iStock contributor but from time to time I have a strange feeling that I should. Actually it's money what makes me happy. But speaking money only - is it worth it? From discussions here it seems that iStock became low earner for independents.
Please don't shoot me if you think that this poll is useless.

Panthermedia.net / Watermark - PantherMedia
« on: November 24, 2011, 17:25 »
I'm contributor of PantherMedia for more than one year. I must admit that this site is so confusing that I have never tried to search my images. I did it today and saw their watermark for a very first time.  It is absolutely useless - especially for isolated objects. Was the watermark always the same? I'm not going to upload anymore if it is not changed.

Image Sleuth / Pinterest - do you think it's legal?
« on: October 05, 2011, 04:20 »
Have you ever heard of http://pinterest.com ?
I'm no copyright expert but I find very strange that there is possibility to embed the "pinned" image to your blog. Then there is a 4pt small text under embedded (imho in fact stolen) image with source: www. xxxxx.xxx.
Pinterest writes something about respecting intellectual property and that I can send them DMCA if I find.... blah blah...  but I don't like it at all - in fact anybody can add to his blog my image that had found anywhere in web and that had been paid by anyone else with false feeling that it is legal. Or is it really legal?

New Sites - General / Photolibrary is closing
« on: July 13, 2011, 08:08 »
Zoonar: Weve just received the information that after the take-over of Getty, Photolibrary will stop its distribution at the end of the year. Zoonar therefore wont activate any pictures for Photolibrary any more. About 400,000 RF pictures will remain in the distribution of Photolibrary until the final end. As a compensation, Zoonar will affiliate new international partner

New Sites - General / VectorStock Redesign
« on: July 10, 2011, 04:02 »
Design of http://www.vectorstock.com/ has changed. IMO it looks better. Unfortunately 0.25 per download and 100 USD payout didn't change.

Bigstock.com / Big Stock - Payout
« on: May 26, 2011, 06:20 »
"If you have more than $30 in commissions, you will see options that allow you to request payout of your commissions."

I think that payout at BigStock was 50 USD or am I mistaken?
If I am not, then I love Shutterstock even more. 30 USD should be usual amount for payout for all low earning sites.

Friend of mine (his English is even worse than mine - so I have to ask) has a collection of images of old cars that he shot in his atelier. He tried to upload few of them to Shutterstock as editorial. They were rejected - not because of technical quality but because of description.
I know how description of editorial images should like but  what to fill in description when it is shot in atelier and not at exhibition or similar place? Any idea? I thought that reviewers would understand that it is impossible to use usual SS Description format for editorial images.
Thanks for help.

CanStockPhoto.com / Do you sort images to categories?
« on: March 14, 2011, 07:41 »
I would like to ask whether you sort images after approval to categories or leave them as they are?
Do you think it helps to sell and it is worth extra time spent on it?
Thanks for your opinions.
