General Stock Discussion / Idea, don't make fun
« on: February 10, 2021, 11:44 »
With the price of royalties falling from ALL stock sites. Here is a idea that just might make your payments go up. Now before you make fun of me have an open mind to this. I do hope Mat is reading this from Adobe as this would be a first for Adobe and would get them a lot of publicity which might move Adobe Wall Street stock price up. Have an option for payment in Bit Coin. From the stock contributor side what do we have to lose when so many stock sites are paying 10 cents a sell. Yes Bit coin is very volatile but that can also work in your favor. I for one would take the Bit Coin for payment in 2021.  if this was 2007 no I would not take it as we all made a lot more money in Stock at that time. Adobe what do you think ?

General Stock Discussion / Question for Historical Photos.
« on: April 07, 2020, 23:12 »
What are the rules on selling old photos such as ww2 and ww1 photos. I see a number of sites on SS that sell these historical photos. I assume they were taken by someone long gone. What are the rules/laws on old photos being sold for stock ?

General Stock Discussion / Maybe a stupid idea.
« on: November 17, 2019, 13:09 »
Everyone complains about images sales declining. Which is true. Maybe a new type of site that is like e-bay . Sell the rights to image at an photo stock site auction. Full rights and ownership of image to highest bidder ? Bad idea maybe, but new idea....I am not the one to start this so....idea is open to anyone who likes stupid ideas.

General Stock Discussion / Your Photos/Portfolio
« on: September 06, 2019, 14:43 »
Not sure if anyone wants to share/show your photos. I for one have been on this forum for a few years now and would love to see the pictures of folks who post on this forum. If you do want to share your work just copy a link to one of your stock photos sites. I will start it with mine, assuming I copied it correctly...Thanks, Scott   https://www.shutterstock.com/g/mj007?language=en

General Stock Discussion / Socialism
« on: March 03, 2019, 15:28 »
I found this interesting. I have been doing a series of concept photos/illustrations on Socialism. Most of the sites have excepted them. Shutterstock has excepted about 50% of them. I guess some of the reviewers have very liberal points of view. I have done Pro and Non Pro Socialist images. It seems SS likes the Pro images. Who would have thunk.

General Stock Discussion / New Toy.
« on: February 13, 2019, 12:44 »
Just got a new toy that is really fun. Removu K1 gimbal 4k video camera. B&H had it at 50% off ,which was $ 199.00. What is cool about it is that you can put it in you shirt/coat pocket. Quality is quit good for a small image size video. The gimbal is flawless with very steady images. Sometimes a new toy will get you out to take photos.

General Stock Discussion / 1000 Image Rule
« on: November 18, 2018, 13:20 »
I read this all the time, is this new site any good. This is what I have been doing for a few years to test out sites. Yes I have tried almost all of them.( Most of the sites are losers) I do what I call picture mining. Kind of like testing for gold in thoir hills. I put 1000 images on a site in a two month time frame. If I have not had any sells in three months I drop the site. If I have one or two sells I will let it run for a couple of months more and then if no more sales I will conclude the site is useless. Just an idea for anyone interested.

General Stock Discussion / Picfair
« on: May 23, 2018, 17:05 »
Got this e-mail this morning.
"My name is Benji Lanyado and Im the founder of Picfair. I wanted to let you know that over the coming weeks, Picfair is opening a crowdfunding campaign - this will allow members of the public to invest in Picfair in return for an equity stake in our business. Youll be able to own a part of Picfair for as little as 10."

I sent back my reply that I had been with them for two years and zero sales. I think I have about 1400 images or so with them. I don't think I will invest today.  W.Scott McGill

General Stock Discussion / New Cameras
« on: April 05, 2018, 13:54 »
Just my thoughts. I use to up-grade my cameras ever five years or so. I shoot with a Nikon D800 now. I just read a rumor of the new Nikon D900 coming out soon . I don't even think I wont to upgrade until my D800's die. Not sure it makes logic to upgrade anymore as newer cameras will not help with future sells. I look back at buying Hasselblad's in the day and it was like Christmas when you bought a new camera. I miss those days of dreaming of getting the latest film camera and lens.  I think the fun is gone on buying cameras anymore other than replacing when broke..... W.Scott McGill

Newbie Discussion / Mad about the stock business.
« on: July 19, 2016, 09:53 »
Just for thoughts. Everyone seems mad about  Istock changing rules of the future images sales, not making enough money on images, sells slowing down, the man ( stock sites getting to much money and so on.. You are all right, but here is a way I thought about the business this morning. I have been doing stock for about eight years. I have generated about $70,000 dollars in this time. OK this is not a living but the ROI is really not that bad if you look at it this way. I averaged about 2000 images over those years. Clearly at first less images and now much larger than 2000 images. If you do the  math I have made about  about 35.00 dollars per image over this eight years time. I would say that I get at least three images per photo session. Each photo session  with uploading averages about one hour of time. So making about 105.00 dollars per hour is really not bad as a part time gig. I should get more ROI as the years go on.. Yes my sells have slowed downed also over the last year  even as I increase my portfolio size. So I say to you  close down your Istock accounts . You all  seem to know only  how to complain about this business.    Please close down your accounts as I will continue to make about 105 buck an hour.

Newbie Discussion / Travel photo model releases.
« on: April 22, 2016, 12:39 »
Question to anyone who might have experience in this. Clearly travel photos with model release will sell better than no model release. When in non English countries do the releases need to be in models language. If so where do you find translated model releases..thanks Scott

Newbie Discussion / YAY
« on: April 11, 2016, 12:01 »
Just closed my account at YAY. Just no sales with them. They are another small site that just cant seem to do well. They are trying to change their selling model but just seems confusing to me with new site address change  to me...
