General Stock Discussion / PayPal Upgrade
« on: September 13, 2015, 15:45 »
Anybody else get this email? I thought it was suspicious, so I forwarded it to Paypal, and they confirmed it was real. I called PayPal and the person answering the phone said there are no upgrades going on. The links are so full of tech gobbledygook that I can't tell what I am supposed to do.

PayPal service upgrades.

As we have previously communicated to you, PayPal is upgrading the certificate for www.paypal.com to SHA-256. This endpoint is also used by merchants using the Instant Payment Notification (IPN) product.

This upgrade is scheduled for 9/30/2015; however, we may need to change this date on short notice to you to align to the industry security standard.

Youre receiving this notification because youve been identified as a merchant who has used IPN endpoints within the past year. If you have not made the necessary changes, we urge you to do so right away to avoid a disruption of your service!

Because these changes are technical in nature, we advise that you consult with your individuals responsible for your PayPal integration. They will be able to identify what, if any, changes are needed. Please share this email and the hyperlinks below with your technical contact for evaluation.

Testing in the Sandbox is one of the best ways to make sure your integration works. Sandbox endpoints have been upgraded to accept secure connections by the SHA-256 Certificates.

Full technical details can be found in our Merchant Security System Upgrade Guide. In addition, our 2015-2016 SSL Certificate Change microsite contains a schedule of our service upgrade plan.

Thanks for your patience as we continue to improve our services.

Macrografiks / End of the Road
« on: December 01, 2014, 16:07 »
From my email:

December 1, 2014
The End Of The Road - Licenses

Hello all,

After two years online and the lack of good results, Macrografiks will finally stop offering licenses as a stock image agency. The site will be working as it is now until the 31st of this December, when it will be changed to an informational page redirecting to our Etsy shop. We are not taking more uploads at this time and all the content will be deleted that day, so you do not need to delete your account.

None of the latest tests worked. The 90% royalty-rate did not encourage photographers to bring possible customers on their own and the blog-size license did not bring more sales. The site became very static for not bringing more contributors and we got to a point where it is too difficult to boost it again and expect different results.

Macrografiks will not disappear. We will turn our platform into a product-based business, offering different type of print products and many home decor items. We will continue to work with quality photos as we have done with our licenses and probably add new type of images like graphics(vectors and bitmaps). During the next months we will focus on our Etsy shop until we can implement a basic e-commerce platform for our new set of products.

Right now we are working with few photographers on Etsy, we will contact more during December to extend our type of images but we will keep the list small as it is easier for us to manage under the present circumstances. If you want to participate please send us an email.

We will keep the newsletter updates to inform users about products and the platform, but also to advise photographers who may want to rejoin if we manage to grow with this new model. Most of our present contributors may be subscribed to our newsletter, if not, you can do it from our Facebook page.

THANK YOU
The Macrografiks team wants to thank you for being part of this project and for dedicating your valuable time uploading your content. It has been a hard and long road and we are very sorry that this project did not work as we expected. We spent priceless time doing our best to make it work but things do not always go the way we want. Hopefully we can find new ways to succeed and whether you are still with us or not, we wish you all the best as photographers.

All the best,
Francisco Aveledo

iStockPhoto.com / iStock Payment Changes
« on: November 25, 2014, 12:25 »
Here's a portion of an email I got today:

On December 15, 2014, we will amend the Artists Supply Agreement (ASA) to change the Compensation section to reflect that you will no longer be required to request payments. The ASA amendment will be made available on the site for your review and acceptance at least 30 days in advance of any changes to the payment systems.

After the new ASA has taken effect (January 15, 2015), and once the ability to request payment has been removed (the last day to request payment will be January 21, 2015), account balances of $100 and over will be paid to contributors automatically on a monthly basis. Additionally, on January 31, 2015, your contributor agreement will be assigned by iStockphoto LP to Getty Images (US), Inc. All of the revised 2014 ASA terms will remain exactly the same except the agreement will be with Getty Images (US), Inc., not iStockphoto LP.

I received an email with a posting of one of my photos unwatermarked. Grrr!  >:(  I investigated and found this.

    from the Alamy forum:

Photoshelter users be warned. They have introduced Lattice, a Pinterest type "service" with no watermark protection.

You are opted in by default. If you use PhotoShelter and value you your images I suggest you login immediately and opt out.

They don't make hugely obvious where to opt out, either.  It's here: Under My account > Account Info > General Information, click Edit Info.  Uncheck the last of 5 checkboxes (Include images in Lattice).

General Stock Discussion / Photo Description and SEO
« on: October 24, 2014, 08:22 »
I've read that unique and detailed descriptions are important to SEO. My question is what if your descriptions were poor on older submissions? Can going back and updating the Description field increase your SEO? Do you get a do over or does it only count when you first upload the photo?

Image Sleuth / Public Domain?
« on: March 17, 2014, 18:52 »
Found one of my photos on this website: http://article.wn.com/view/2014/02/17/Vitamin_C_now_suggests_preventing_strokes/

Public Domain??? I sent them a notice that the image was for sale on all of my stock sites, and to please remove it. I called them but all I got was voice mail, and they haven't responded. Weird that they gave me credit, and then say it's free!

According to TMZ, Bradley Cooper owns the copyright. Even though it was Ellen's phone/camera, once she hands it to Bradley, he is the photographer. How would he retrieve the original if it lives on Ellen's phone? If you saw it happen on the telecast, Ellen organized the selfie, and had every intention of taking the picture, when Bradley took the phone to extend it out further to include more people in the shot. Might be an interesting court fight.

Off Topic / Tahrir Square Laser lights
« on: July 04, 2013, 17:27 »
Does anyone know where all the green laser lights from the crowd in Tahrir Square come from? Are they pen lights? It looks like some one had a concession on the green ones!

I think this was the first revolution with a laser light show. All future revolutions will have to include them.

CHICAGONot long after he happened to pass through a bustling office Friday morning, stock-photo model scout Andrew Sheeran revealed to colleagues that he had seen something very special in a man he had spotted wearing business attire and crossing his arms. The second he sat down on the edge of that desk, folded his arms, and stared ahead intently, I knew this guy was a natural, Sheeran said of the clean-cut, dark-haired 35-to-45-year-old man. I can definitely picture him shaking hands with a smiling Asian woman or standing in front of a projector screen pointing to a pie chart. Who knows, maybe he could be on the cover of a workplace guidelines pamphlet some day. He has the potential, thats for * sure. Sheehan added that the last time he had come across such raw talent was back in 1997, when he first saw famed stock-photo model Hank Felder sit down at a desktop computer, grimace, and run a hand through his hair.

Just typing my real name in the search field, here are the number of my stock image links I found on the first page:
50  Shutterstock
37  FAA
26  Depositphotos
25  Flickr
11  Cutcaster
11  Warmpicture
 9  My Website
 2  Bigstock

By going back and adding the words "stock photos" after my name, there was nothing from FAA or Flicker, but there were 92 from 123RF added to the above list.

I just recently joined FAA and Flicker. I loaded up some heavily watermarked stock samples on Flicker, with a link to GL Stock Images. (last week) I was surprised how fast they showed up on Google Images under my name.

I don't have clue how this stuff is sorted out. Number of views? I gave up on Cutcaster years ago.

General Stock Discussion / Flickr Keywords (Tags)
« on: March 13, 2013, 07:42 »
I've been loading a bunch of watermarked stock images onto Flickr with a link to GL Stock Images. My images have all the normal keywords, but then I added the tag "Stock Photos". Good idea? Perhaps "Stock Photography"?

Will those terms show up in Google searches and drive traffic to my Flickr site?

Pond5 / Photo Pricing for Pond5
« on: February 05, 2013, 15:27 »
Can anyone suggest photo pricing for Pond5?   The other threads seem to concentrate on video, but I'm curious about photos.  $10?   Is that the highest or lowest someone pays? What percentage do we get?  What about the checkboxes that say "Set price for me", "Same price for all sizes"?  Should I check one of them, and what happens if I don't check any of them?

Alamy.com / Alamy RM Mistake
« on: January 02, 2013, 15:57 »
I just had a sale on Alamy that I had mistakenly marked RM. Everything else I have is RF. This is an old file and I immediately tried to delete the file and was told that it will be on sell until June 30. My problem is this file is for sale on other RF sites.

What should I do? Should contact Alamy? I've started deleting it from the other RF sites but some aren't so immediate.

Selling Stock Direct / Keywording on your Website
« on: October 28, 2012, 18:02 »
Here's a weird question. When keywording the photos that you sell on your personal website, do you include your name? How would that affect Google searches?

General Stock Discussion / Getty Images at Every Tragedy
« on: August 06, 2012, 07:23 »
Within minutes, at every tragedy in the news, we are presented with images from Getty. Ninety five percent of the time, the images are in focus, and exposed correctly. Sometimes they are images taken before emergency responders arrive. Sometimes they are images taken within police barricades that the rest of the public don't have access to. So, how does this work?
Does Getty really have staff photographers all over the world, in every remote region, ready to snap away and upload immediately?  It's logistically impossible. Are they imbedded with emergency crews? Even if Getty is buying from professional photographers who scan emergency channels, how are they negotiated and uploaded so fast?
