you have sold it with the 18-200? I guess regarding FF I would say wait for the new D700 perhaps.. Overall I want a lens that goes from 18 or 24 (DX body) to a few zoom maybe, to make it more versatile instead of only studio..

i sold them separately, but can you believe, the price of the 18-200 actually went up in price a year later.  :o

by the way, amazon.com has great user reviews on all these lenses.

i think if you're going to upgrade to a ff camera soon, then it's better to invest in an fx lens like the 24-70 now. any dx lens you have will be wasted on a future ff camera for your photo will be cropped to only about 5mp.

as for the 18-200, it's very versatile and light for the purpose. however, i felt it was soft at the 200mm end. if you ever get the 70-200mm you'll be shocked how much better it is. so, i think the decision is not about the lens, but what kind of camera you want in the future.

nevertheless, i was able to offload my d90 and 18-200 mm lens for a handy price.  (they're extremely popular second hand) ;D

with a small portfolio, you won't see much of a returns at the beginning at is. it takes a while for your photos to "age" to enter the search engine. so, is will be a bit of a sleeper at the beginning.

in addition to a measely 15% (i get 60% at zoonar), it's tough to pass their quality inspection and even tougher to get anything editorial pass their inspectors. if it's not artifacts, then there's something wrong with the caption, even if the 4 Ws are completely in place.

it will just be so frustrating to upload, that you won't even want to meet your weekly quota of 20.

however, once you get pass all of this, is can still be a top (2 or 3) earner. shutterstock is a piece of cake in comparison.

they're one of the easiest places to submit to, if you have all your iptc info entered. i have only a slightly larger portfolio at zoonar and it has done much better than alamy at macro pricing.

Michael,

i just got a sale on apisnetwork for 48 euro, which is fabulous. under standard pricing, the highest amt is 45 euros, so am i getting 100% on royalty free or merchandising as extra? you also mentioned that it's mostly magazines that use apisnetwork, so would they need those extra licencings? thanx!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Who copied whom?
« on: March 02, 2011, 15:03 »
i prefer the 1st (non yuri) photo. cuter model, more natural pose than the second. the scale is more in balance with the body. yuri's scale seems to overpower the model. it's not a matter of technical superiority as much as taste and usage.

it's hard to tell who copied whom though. it's possible yuri saw the 1st photo and tried to improve upon it, which everyone seems to agree.

C'mon, I thought the time capsule remark was funny.  ;D Besides, it does throw a little caution out there about becoming exclusive now. I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, but you might want to wait to see how things go at the beginning of the year when these changes kick in. I think there are some advantages to being a new exclusive under the new system, but I'd definitely be worried how the independents will react come January.

thank goodness you still have a sense of humor amidst all this turmoil.  :D

@traveller 116 - i feel like rip van wrinkle in these times, step away from the pc/mac for a few minutes and everything's changed.

bme at dt and is and bme across the board w/o the help of a single el.

the requirement for exclusivity is now 500 downloads, not 250. the general trend is actually to drop exclusivity at is rather than reach it. did you arrive here in a time capsule, by the way?  ;)

I have no desire to bash the Huffington Post, not a liberal leftie like me! It's very possible they don't know anything about how Getty has screwed over thousands of photographers and illustrators - my question is, what's the most effective way of making them aware of this fact? They are very anti-corporate, very pro-little guy. Maybe I'm naive, but I think if they knew the story behind Thinkstock, they just might pull the ads - which would leave Getty to pimp 'The Abomination Known as Thinkstock' on sites that have no social conscience. The question is - what's the most effective way to make them aware?

you can always include links back to this forum or the istock forum or even the stockfresh blog article to back up that there are masses of contributors unhappy about this.

Ooh  I like that term 'king maker'.

I'm gonna put that on my CV:  'Microstock king maker and breaker'  ;)

hey, i'm all for not being the victims here.  :)

let's not "throw out the baby with the bath water..." i think stockfresh and rgb seem pretty above board. i mean, i'm 100% sure i'm contributing to stockfresh and not rgb and that rgb is benefiting stockfresh because sxc used to have a good relationship with stockexpert. in any case, how is it different from the istock sxc relationship? has anyone ever questioned that? did they purchase the entire sxc operation outright or is it still independent?

as i mentioned in another thread, if we as contributors are only jesters in this microstock world, at least we can be the king maker in our choices of who we support. as far as commission, experience, and performance go, it seems that stockfresh is the obvious choice.

disclaimer: i was just approved today after almost three months and most of my files were approved within 8 hours. just make sure don't use quotes around your keywords, they will be rejected.  ;D

why would you want microstockers to not accept these terms? i'm sure many will be joining you in rm competition very soon if you instigate them any further.

i think people are also forgetting that getty is getting a lot of material through flicker, not just through the curated getty flicker program, but also just anyone who options for getty to broker their casual photos. the prices through these programs are substantially higher than micro, but it's still 20% commission.

whatever can be photographed has been photographed....

unless the top contributors start a coop or a new agency to steer the masses, there is a lot of stasis here.

Oh of course but I am anonymous, a very small fish, not overly angry or stressed at these changes, and not really worth crushing or teaching a lesson.

i had advocated D-day (deactivation day) of one's most popular files for a short period of time, so it's not permanent. it's something everyone can do to hit istock's bottomline at about .5 million a day (?)

but it's also been pointed out that it may be hard to reactivate the files afterwards since you need to contact support.

my port is too small and new to make a difference to anyone, including myself, since is accounts for only 20% of sales, at best. however, is performance keeps getting better, with 35% growth each month. so, i'll just maintain whatever i'm doing since it's really the more established players who'll change the status quo at is.

I have also been approved for the reportage/archival path as well.

hi dan:

i applied for this also, but keep having problems with their online form submission. i also emailed their support with no reply. any tips on this?

i think the alamy forum is a much better place for your questions or do a search there. but from what i gather, there are a couple of celebrity stock sites based in the uk that would want these shots for news, rather than archival. again a search on alamy would retrieve those names for you. (rex features?)

Do they still do that?  Does it still take 4 sub DLs to equal 1 normal FT download?

uh huh...i really don't get ft's popularity. some people do really well by them and some don't. even veer outperforms them for me.
