Canva / How can I quit Canva and get my content deleted????
« on: November 29, 2023, 21:32 »
I've looked and all I can find is the option to delete my "team" which does not seem to include deleting my content. I've had a bunch of old content hanging around there for years with a tiny bit of revenue but I now want to delete it but cannot even find an email address to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction?   thnx.

Photo sold for 16 to a national publication for unlimited use in perpetuity. My cut 0. Getting more like Getty all the time!

Wow. Thank-you!

General Stock Discussion / Shutterstock photo collection size
« on: August 07, 2020, 12:24 »
This has likely been covered before, but is there a way to collect data on  Shutterstock's photo collection size on a daily or even weekly basis. Hopefully historical and future. A friend is looking to chart the daily intake of photos into the collection.   Thnx

We are nose diving into a major economic slowdown. Aside from companies who produce hand sanitizer, we are all screwed.

I know someone who worked there on the sales side. He said it was a great place to work until they went public. Overnight it changed with ridiculous goals set and massive backlash for not making them. It became nasty. My friend left soon after. When you are beholding to make your Wall Street numbers every quarter, at any cost, the game changes quickly.

Canva / Re: Withholding Tax from Canva - How to get it back??
« on: November 01, 2019, 14:47 »
Got it .. so you apply against your native country taxes. I assumed it was something I had to petition the Aussie government for. I'm in Canada but I imagine it's similar to the US. Frankly, for the couple hundred involved I will probably pass on it. I get enough grief on my taxes without throwing something new into the mix and possibly triggering an expensive audit.

Canva / Withholding Tax from Canva - How to get it back??
« on: November 01, 2019, 12:49 »
Has anyone figured out how to get the tax back that Canva withheld? For the first time I actually received a statement from Canva showing the tax withheld. I've searched a bit on the internet but cannot find a clear answer. Anyone had any luck with this?  Thnx.

Cameras / Lenses / Re: $50 Insurance saved me $2,400
« on: August 17, 2019, 17:11 »
As an ex-photojournalist I had every lens protected with a UV filter and everyone I know did. When you are working in hostile environments it makes sense. Now I work in a studio and I still have most of my lenses filtered up, albeit with more expensive filters. I work somewhat with splashing liquids and foods and I'm surprised and how much crap ends up on the filter -- instead of the lens.

I was a photo editor for years and dealt with tons of issues like this. 99%  of the time it is the words (and context) used with the photo that cause the issue (and lawsuit)/ Companies tend to go after the source to try and eliminate the photo. I worked at a national newspaper and I received calls and emails all the time asking me to remove photos that offended a company/person etc. Sorry no can do!

Canva / Re: Canva - did I miss something?
« on: July 11, 2019, 21:34 »
At least the fact that they withhold Aussie taxes is irrelevant now considering there is virtually no income for contributors now. Their contributor relations are abysmal. Every time I have contacted them promises were made and never followed through on.

I haven't really paid much attention to Canva and am just reading about Getty and subscriptions now. I have a static old portfolio that I uploaded there when they went live and it produced a surprisingly steady income until a few months ago when it dropped off the map. I'm at $22 this month way, way off from what I was making. Sad to see.

General Stock Discussion / Re: The Getty debt
« on: March 23, 2019, 19:43 »
They would go into Chapter 11 and re-organize their debt - likely trade it for equity again. They still are the dominant market player and have a viable business without the debt load. Lenders don't want to kill the cow:  They will find a creative way to keep it supplying them with milk. I worked for a company in a similar situation. Vulture funds usually find a way to keep the tap flowing -- albeit often at the cost of employees and suppliers.

Alamy.com / Re: Alamy reducing commission from 50% to 40%
« on: December 21, 2018, 15:23 »
I earn so little from Alamy that it is inconsequential for me personally. When companies need more operating profit one of the ways to accomplish this is to squeeze their suppliers. In this case it is fairly easy for them. They recanted on the exclusive rate structure because some of their big contributors balked and they could not afford to lose them. As for the non-exclusive contributors there is really not much recourse aside from deleting your content. I agree with the comment about the term "commissions".  This has always pissed me off. We earn royalties on our work. The agency (Alamy) earns a commission on the sale. Completely backwards.

Cameras / Lenses / Tripod Legs Recommedation
« on: October 08, 2018, 16:37 »
Hi - Looking to buy some new tripod legs. Need something that can hit 7 feet, go really low and hold a heavy load. Looking at the Gitzo GT3543XLS :
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1328240-REG/gitzo_gt3543xlsus_systematic_tripod_ser_3_4s.html  - but pretty pricey.  Wondering if there is anything out there more reasonable. Weight of the tripod not an issue since I won't be backpacking it, etc. so does not have to be carbon fiber.   Any recommendations?

Microstock News / Re: Sad News

Wow that is such sad news. I never met Scott in person but corresponded on email, etc. over the years. A real loss.

Yes, of course  -- just like I do with all of my photography income. Expenses and amortization are deducted of course. My accountant looks after it. The last thing in the world you need is having your country's revenue department coming after you. It never ends well!

General Stock Discussion / Re: Wemark hows it going
« on: May 07, 2018, 20:05 »
It still all comes back to the buyer. They are getting images for pennies from the big microstock companies and it is very simple to deal with them. What motive would there be for them to switch?

23
I can see Wemark has some heavy hitters behind it and the concept is great ... I just wonder how they will drive buyers to the marketplace. There is really no incentive for buyers to move away from the established stock agencies. That said ... I hope they do.

Stocksy / Re: Call To Artists is Open!
« on: March 26, 2018, 19:49 »
As a Stocksy member I am sorry to hear all the frustration and anger expressed in the forum. As Sean or Gillian  said earlier there are only a limited number of spots and the small editing team works on the applications while doing there normal editing jobs. It's a lot of work for them and they are diligent about being thorough. I also have no inside insights, but I know they are looking for photographers that bring something new to the coop and are not duplicating what other members are already shooting. Getting rejected is not a necessarily a commentary on the quality of work being submitted but often the type and style of the portfolio.

Canva / Re: Canva
« on: March 26, 2018, 19:30 »
Is Canva worth it? They keep inviting me to be a contributor and I can't figure out how they work. And they look very low on the earnings survey totem pole.

Edited to add: I read through some of the thread and it doesn't sound worth it. I knew there was a reason I didn't respond to their invites.

I have the same old, somewhat outdated portfolio which I never add to on Canva as I have on SS and Adobe/Fotolia. I make 2-5 times the  $$  on Canva compared to the other sites.
