Its got nothing to do with someone buying my pictures..I sell plenty on SS and another agencies.

It was that I was surprised that an image sold for more than $2 on Shutterstock!

Why are people taking this so negatively? This forum is so abrasive - I don't get it.

As one of the cynics and complainers here, I still don't get why you are getting so much shade about merely sharing your enjoyment of an unexpectedly high sale.  The very fact that the earnings trend is down for alot of us makes a bit of good fortune something to celebrate.

That makes both of us Pixel...

Great sale, brings hope to all of us!

I think a lot of complainers used to do well when competition wasn't as stiff... these days you can make a lot of money - you just have to be better.

I have more experience in the audio side of things, where you could sell really, really crappy pieces for a lot of money 10-15 years ago. Today the competition is high and you need to be able to produce professional sounding tunes. There is still A LOT of money to be made though. Probably many times more.

Exactly!  8)

I only read here and don't post because of the negativity and complaining of the 'oldtimers' as they call themselves and trying to discourage newbies. I used to be new here a few years ago (2012) and got some stupid reply's for simple questions or being positive. I now make about $6000+ per month and my 'earnings from new content for last 3 months' on SS is always on $300 to $400. I add a maximum of 50 images and vectors per month. Back when I posted here under another name most here told me it was to late. Some of them make less then I do now and still tell people it is to late. They know it best "since they have been there from the beginning."

Stay positive! I did and it works! :) I get big sales every month. They are not gone at all. I have about 6 to 10 every month going from $24 up to $120.

Nice to hear you had a big sale. More will come if you keep improving and get better. Good luck! :)

I think you're my new mentor!! 😎😄

Awesome post! Thank you :)

Funny reading that about the Alamy forum.  Mention you did microstock there a few years ago and you would of got worse abuse than you usually see here.  They still have a few obnoxious morons, one of them has been banned lots of times here but keeps coming back.  I don't mind the banter here most of the time, any internet forum without a lot of moderation is going to have people that make negative comments but you soon see who they are and learn to ignore them.  Sometimes they make a valid point.

Very true - but some forums are worse than others.. this one seems to be a cesspit of unhappy people with regrets. Or maybe it's just a photographer thing? You know like accountants - boring people accountants.. maybe photographers are just scorned whingers by birth?  There's probably a study somewhere. I should google it.

On the other had there are also some very nice people here and that is why I visit regularly and even post sometimes like today.

I have no doubt the Alamy forum has had it's pricks - I just haven't noticed them yet  ;D

Cheers

I understand exactly what you are writing. Without atacking anyone personally. There are many nice people here but in general it is all about making destructive comments or see the whole industry black. Dont understand me wrong. I like critics but only if they are constructive. To many people that want to create a negative imagination about all the stock agencies. Complaining about competition. Complaining that their position in the search engine changed. For every little change the agency is here taken down in a level that new contributors are scared to even start. There is a chance for everybody in microstock and that is a fact. I spend much time on the Alamy forum because there the comments are like a education instead of black words.

Gongratulations for the sale mate.

 :) Mirco

Thanks Mirco,

You're spot on about Alamy forums, the nicest bunch of online people ever. They are always willing to help, never afraid of competition and rather than winging about change, they run with it.

It's the opposite of this forum - although there also are some very nice people here too!

Cheers,
Dave.

Congrats.  Try Alamy.  They sometimes sell for over $1,000 and you get 50% of it.  That makes me WHOOHOO.

LOL!!  8)I'm with Alamy, I love those guys :) thanks to them I'm able to shoot the MotoGP and other major Motorsport events. And its true they do sometimes sell for that amount, but you'd expect that from a Macrostock agency.. High prices, low volume.

If one of my images sold for that on Alamy though, I'd truly been dancing around my studio yelling Woohoooo!!!  ;D ;D It hasn't happened yet though :(

Over a $100 was normal for SOD sales for years.

I came in way too late, there's no doubt about that.... :(

I just made $60 in commission on one image! I didn't know that was even possible in SS?

No sour grapes - I've had bigger this month already -- But I know what I will get, be it .38 or $126 and everything in-between.

It's always a nice surprise to get larger sales but you admit you didn't know it was possible. I just find it incredulous that people submit without knowing all the details, especially how much you can make.

Look I hear you.. I understand that some people just don't get sarcasm. And to show that I have no sour grapes myself, I'll even offer to help heave that long stick from out of your arse.  8) ::)

Always amazed by those who don't know what it is they are signing up for - even when it is pleasant surprises that shock them.

Forgive me for expecting the majority of my image sales to be about 50 cents on SS.. I sell about 300 images a month at the moment and that's what they average.. So when one sells for $250ish dollars... and not $1 as the rest do, I think surprise is a natural reaction.   Don't you?

Sounds reasonable to me.  Maybe there's a case of sour grapes.

Congrats on the great sale!!  It's been a long time since I had one like that, but it sure is fun when it happens!

Thanks mate! Much appreciated :)  It's the first time for me so my excitement is probably on the noobish side  ;D

I keep most of my RAW's but never jpegs.. once the jpeg has been uploaded or delivered to the client - they're deleted.

I mean if I ever need that jpeg again, i just export another copy from Lr.

With the release of the new tools (coming soon) you'll be able to select RF editorial too.
Cheers

Wow! Did I just read and understand that correctly? We'll be able to upload editorial images which we currently have under an RF license elsewhere?
That's fantastic news if I've understood correctly. The vast majority of my port is editorial, but I cannot currently upload those to Alamy because they have to be RM if editorial.
Kind regards, david.

Yes, you read and understood that correctly :)

Cheers

 :o ;D Giddy up! That's great news..

And while were're on the topic, I want to give Alamy a shout out too.. Bradley from news has been awesome with me.. he's helped me gain media creds for a bunch of motorsport events over the last few weeks.. he's polite, prompt and an absolute champ!

I don't know what it is.. I have two web sales, 3 newspaper, 1 magazine and 1 book sale but all still pending.. No idea how much yet..

For the life me me I can't find what percentage they pay us - anywhere..

Now their contributor sales portal is down :(

All good now - it was because I had brackets in the file name.. Their ftp server doesn't play well with brackets apparently.

Is it just me or are others having trouble uploading to SS via FTP.. I can't upload via PicWorkFlow either.

The wep upload works.. but smashes my internet to pieces.

And it worked  :'(

Congrats! You have the most beautiful port among newcomers that I've seen since the port links are up on SS.

Remember, you don't need to satisfy everyone's wishes here, just ignore uncomfortable question and keep up the good work!

Thanks Dodie! Although I wonder if you need your eyes checked?!  :P

TBH, I don't think much of my port at all but I enjoy it and sales are increasing every month - soon I'll be able to buy a nice coffee with my earnings.

I don't mind the questions - I put myself out there anyway and the feedback is awesome.. much more positive that I had expected - especially considering this forum can be brutal at times.

Lol that's one of biggest fears! I'll get a barrage of criticism, not sure I'm strong enough for that yet haha

But here you go anyway.... http://www.shutterstock.com/g/David+Hewison?rid=3399407

hahahaha showing portfolio is scary indeed ;D I haven't showed mine yet in here for this reason ;D

You will have more sales if you balance your editorial content with more commercial photos. Anything interesting to shoot around your place?

Nope lol. But the city is 45mins drive away... and there are other interesting things around where I live, but nothing on my door step.. well, there's fat people.. they don't really sell! haha

Congrats!!!

I also started in October and also with editorials and also with 200 images. Are you only in SS? I started at SS, IS, DT and Alamy at the same time and so far SS is outperforming all the others

Thanks :D

Sounds like we're pretty similar then - most of my stuff is editorials which no one really expects to sell hard..

I'm on SS, DT, Alamy, BS, iStock, Pond5, DP, 500px (2nd highest earner - low sales though), Fotolia, CS, 123RF & Yay.

I have about 60 images on Getty through Eyeem and used to upload news to Demotix till it vanished into a puff of smoke.

Now my news goes to SS, Alamy or Newzulu.

So that's me.. I'm all over the place - too many places. I think for stock I'll focus on Fotolia, SS and DT. High quality images for Alamy, and all news will stay with Newzulu as they seem more embedded into the Australian media market.
