General Stock Discussion / Private Collections
« on: August 13, 2008, 10:09 »
I have this theory and am curious what others think. Has microstock been around long enough now that most designers private collection of images has gotten large enough that they don't need to sign up for subscriptions or do individual downloads very often?

General Stock Discussion / Best Model Release
« on: June 07, 2008, 00:14 »
I've never had issues with releases until joining on with micros. There are some paranoid dudes out there. iStock won't accept a Getty release even though they are owned by Getty. Dreamstime won't accept a iStock release because:

The attached MR/PR is signed specifically for another agency, or it is not generic in terms of the laws that govern the agreement. The model release represents a written agreement between the model and the photographer, therefore it must be governed by the laws of the country/state where the parties reside, or by international laws. Please use our own model release document or a generic one in English.

It's a bunch of whooey. There is no way I'm getting models to sign a bunch of different release.

Does anyone know which one is generally accepted by all the micros.

General Midstock / Microstock/Midstock distinctions
« on: June 06, 2008, 12:04 »
There's an obvious difference in price point between micro and midstock. However are the images used the same? I see a lot of the big players on both mid and micro sites and I have not done a image by image comparison but it looks like the same stuff to me. Does anyone know?

SS has the honourable distinction of providing me my first micro payout. I won't be paying off my bizjet anytime soon but a good thing never the less.

I was wondering if I could get an opinion from you veteran microshooters out there. Your best selling images on SS, do they  usually start off with an obvious spike in sales and continue along being generally high in sales or do they have a much longer longevity than the average image where they never really soar but never die off either, always giving you a sale here and there?

As my portfolio builds I continue to see increases in DLs. I hit 62 on Wednesday plus an EL. I'm starting to see real improvements. Yesterday I deleted 7 images off my portfolio. Every since that moment not a single sale has been reported. True that Friday night and Saturday are slow but I've never seen zero in this time. Usually a half dozen anyway. I still find images of mine in searches. Is it just an unexpected lull? I perhaps need to get back on my anti-paranoia medication.

Bigstock.com / Should have read the fine print.
« on: May 25, 2008, 10:10 »
I made a the mistake of not reading the upload guidelines for BigStock and find myself with a poor rating with little hope of recovery. I uploaded 300+ shots thinking I would place them in the queue only to find out you can't place more than 20. So I figure I'll get rid of a bunch of the similars and speed things along a bit; to help with their obvious overload. * if you don't get penalized as a rejection for every image you delete.

Hello all,

Is it easy or even possible to delete single images from your portfolio?

Do you folks resubmit rejections after making an attempt at a fix?

Crestock.com / Perplexed
« on: May 22, 2008, 13:31 »
I personally like the look of the Crestock site. It has a nice design. The search engine has a lot of horespower. The collection is heavily edited; a good thing to make you stand out from the competition. So, why such few sales? I am new there but I am new everywhere on micro sites and they are the only ones running a perfect zilch for me on the sales front.

General Stock Discussion / Best Micro >>> Macro?
« on: May 21, 2008, 16:32 »
Greetings,

Do any of you, who contribute to both micro and macro, ever use the micro sites as a way of determining your most salable images? Let the best float to the top then pull them and place them in the macro market?

62
Hello all,

Well it's the end of my second week submitting to micros and I must say the whole experience is positive as a whole. The one area that is certainly frustrating is rejection for technical reasons. One place reviews a file as fine and someone else finds a fault. Nothing consistent. If I was a newbie to stock I'd be looking for fault in my procedure but I submit the same way to the trad. agencies and I can't remember last time I got I rejection for technical reasons. How many of you feel that your files are evaluated honestly?

Bigstock.com / Historical Review Times
« on: May 13, 2008, 09:22 »
Has BigStock had decent review times in the past? As many know it is very slow plus as a new contributer I can only have 20 images in the queue at one time. Much too slow to make any kind of a commitment at this time. Is there a chance this will improve or is this the status quo?

General Stock Discussion / How many more LuckyOlivers?
« on: May 10, 2008, 11:04 »
From my short stint in the Micro world I can see that the business is far from settled. The first to succumb to the competitiveness is LO.  Judging from reported earnings here and on other forums, others must be struggling as well. Although Micro is a growth industry it seems that just putting up a site doesn't guarantee success. Like the business of Macro RF, there is so little to distinguish the various sellers. Everyone seems to try and get images up on the biggest sites and a few small ones. IS has an exclusivity option that some photographers use, giving them an substantial edge over the others. No one in their right mind would submit exclusively to a smaller Micro. The one Micro I don't understand is Snap Village; not because they picked the absolute stupidest name you could think of, but because I have to believe that they actually had money to set up a proper a site. Something that they have failed to do in a big way. If Bill Gates can't afford to set up a decent site, who can? Yet they flounder around like an ftp upload is analogous to a trip to Pluto. Come on Snap Village, quit looking like a bunch of inept amateurs and do something real or just drop it. I can't believe Corbis can't make themselves a force in the Micro market. As for iStock, they have a bizarre policy that precludes any old time shooters from going exclusive. I can't imagine why, if IS could, wouldn't sign on big name shooters exclusively. Asking to drop all previous RF images from market is both committing financial suicide and impossible. Many RF contracts that involve CDs and multiple resellers can be as long as 20 years. So even if someone wanted to go exclusive they can't drop the images from market. Of course why anyone would do that is beyond me. It just strikes me as odd that a business would adopt a policy that disallows some of best and largest producers in the industry from submitting only to them.

iStockPhoto.com / How long from approval to portfolio?
« on: May 09, 2008, 13:25 »
Sorry for the inane question but how long does it take for an image to go from the approval stage i.e. receive email from iStock; to seeing the image on your portfolio?

iStockPhoto.com / What to submit?
« on: May 05, 2008, 23:37 »
Hello all, I just started out with the Micro end of the business. And as I am limited, for the time being, to 15 images/168 hours to IS, does one just look at which shots are doing best at other sites and submit the those or are there other considerations?

Shutterstock.com / Image Longevity?
« on: May 05, 2008, 23:20 »
Hello all,  I just made my first submission to SS and managed the 7/10 to get an acceptance. The first real day of sales looks good.  16 DL for 7 images. I guess I could just hang back and wait but am curious what sort of DL curve  for any particular image takes over time. Does it start off hot and then crash or is there a build then gradual decrease?
