General Stock Discussion / GDPR Question
« on: March 11, 2018, 06:15 »
Hi there - just after a bit on insight over this. GDPR legislation comes into effect in May 2018 - https://www.eugdpr.org/ basically tightening up data protection regulations massively. I've tried doing some research into this regarding the following, but can't seem to find a definitive answer:

I do a lot of work designing websites for small businesses. For the sites a lot of the time these businesses want galleries of their own work (lovely shots of fencing and clean drains!). Ok, that's easy, send them to me and I'll set up the page for you.

My question is to comply with GDPR would I need to append either Alt Text to the image identifying the subject / who supplied it or/and would I need to ensure the relevant information is added to the image in the meta data as well - (file info fields in Photoshop / IPTC captions)?

I'm guessing a picture of a landscaped garden with differ from one with an identifiable house '/' person in the background:

https://www.eugdpr.org/gdpr-faqs.html

What constitutes personal data?

Any information related to a natural person or Data Subject, that can be used to directly or indirectly identify the person. It can be anything from a name, a photo, an email address, bank details, posts on social networking websites, medical information, or a computer IP address.

If anyone does have knowledge on this, it would great if you could let me know what you think. I know there are lots of huge companies out there who design websites, containing both stock and customer supplied pictures - interested what this will mean to them.

Thanks - Oldhand

Cutcaster / Cutcaster FTP upload issue
« on: November 12, 2013, 18:51 »
Hi there

I've been getting a "Disk full please upload later" message when trying to upload pics to Cutcaster via FTP (Ipswitch) for the last 2 days. Any one else get the same? Other sites are fine - just this one. If I recall, someone verified from Cutcaster tends to drop in here to answer any Cutcaster questions - John if my memory serves me well....

General Stock Discussion / The Good, the Medium and Bad
« on: September 03, 2013, 16:16 »
Hiya - quick rant about the time it takes some sites to pay up when you've submitted for payment. I divide them into the following:

Good - Dreamstime - 2-4 days on the nail - brilliant!

Medium - Those with regular payment schedules - IS, SS, Veer, 123. I'll add in Canstock here, they are pretty quick off the mark. A nod to Most and Cutcaster as well - they seem to care about their turnaround.

Bad - BS and Fotolia - maybe it's just me - they are pretty slow and random IMO

Terrible - Yay - shame this one, they used to be on the ball. This changed a couple of months ago for the old fraud chestnut. Now they are starting to push way out.

Do other people have similar thoughts?

Oldhand - who really does like Yay for many reasons and wouldn't like them to slip too far down his list of reliable payers!!!

General Stock Discussion / Question about image licenses
« on: July 04, 2013, 17:02 »
Hi all - I'm after a bit of informed feedback with this one.

Say an advertising agency makes a deal with a Microstock agency. The advertising agency creates an account and downloads let's say 1000 images. For this they pay a fee per image of say $20 each. That's $20 to the agency - who will pay the contributor the going commission rate.

The 1000 images are download by a design team and stored in an internal database. The team of designers now has unrestricted access to the images to use as many times as they want in any type of print ad or website.  Let's say they are a large advertising agency and have 10's of 1000's of clients. You get the drift - for the $20 fee they use the image 100's of times. There is no internal log by the advertising agency on usage.

Question: is there a license with any Micro agency you know which would allow this? I'd have though they would have to buy the rights per image outright - but maybe I'm wrong?

Thanks...

General Macrostock / FlickrRF/Getty
« on: September 28, 2009, 05:24 »
Hi there - just a quick one..

In the UK today (28th Sept), there's a picture in the Daily Telegraph newspaper, Page 25, captioned, "FickrRF/Getty". I think it's of an organic vegetable or wine glasses. Sorry I can't post the pic, scanners on the blink!

Fist time I've come across this caption, and I scan through every national UK newspaper every day.

If it had come from a macro agency they'd have paid about $70 - not sure with Flickr.

I have no pics with Flickr, but thought it might interest someone

Alamy.com / Number of Alamy images online reduced?
« on: July 31, 2009, 06:10 »
Hi there

Is it just me - yesterday Alamy has 17 million images online, today it's 16.63 million. Just wondered if anyone knew if there was a reason for this.

Had a look on Alamy forums quickly, and althoughI didn't get an answer, found this information about top contributors revenues.

Apologies if this has been posted previously, I'm fairly new around here. Thought it made interesting reading.

General Macrostock / Another Macro agent gives up the ghost
« on: June 25, 2009, 09:54 »
Just got this lovely email from an old macro agent in Spain I have been supplying for 10 years, I'll have to avoid specific names, as I am friendly with them - suffice to say they are big and well established.

"As you must know, we have been focus during the last 30 years on the
market of lifestyle, health and beauty, travel, sports, RM and RF...and
food.

The general situation of the economy in Europe and specially in Spain has
caused that a lot of our clients has close their doors, and most others have
reduced their budget to less that 50%. So , the microstock has grown a lot
of lately. If the general situation of Spanish agencies wasnt good,
microstock has getting worse their economy.

All the other areas so much saturated and prices are lower each month, and
its not interested to work, neither for us nor our suppliers. I know that this
is the same situation formuch of the Spanish agencies, that are experiencing
economic problems that we want to avoid. "

Another outlet in macro gone.

This isn't a complaining thread, just further evidence of where the wind is blowing in the macro world - thought it might interest some of you who haven't as many contacts in these areas.

It is, however, the first time I have heard of an agency citing microstock as a reason for abandoning it's core business practices. Glad I got my lifebelt on early, at this rate I'll jump ship totally in a couple of years.
