« on: January 14, 2013, 05:02 »
I thought we could keep a little list of how many images we have collectively deactivated on iStock photo.

When you deactivate some files, add to the tally here.

I just did my first one.

New Sites - General / ShotShop Anyone?
« on: January 09, 2013, 06:52 »
Is anyone submitting to ShotShop?  What is your experience...
http://www.shotshop.com/

To specify, the upload is working fine, it is more the submit that seems to be having problems.  I uploaded a batch of 20 images.  All the images arrived at Shutterstock, but the software said it didn't submit any.  When looking on the site, 16 of them were submitted + another 16 or so corrupt files and 4 files weren't submitted at all.

The software still showed all images were uploaded but no images were submitted.

The yearly microstock survey is now live and can be found here.
http://microstocksurvey.com/index.php?sid=86518

I've added a couple additional questions to the survey, thanks to feedback from previous years, but still tried to keep it as short as possible so it doesn't take too long.  If you have your stats ready it should still take less than 5 minutes to complete.  Last year we had well over 700 microstockers respond which is a great number.  Hopefully we can match (and break) that record this year.  Please share the link so we get as many and as varied respondents as possible.  Everyone's numbers are useful for the results, from the person with 5 images/illustrations to the full time pro.

Like the previous years, as a thanks for filling out the survey I'll be running a little give away, this year for a 52" wescott reflector, one of my favorite photography tools.  If you are an illustrator or already have a reflector and don't want a second one, you can get a gift certificate from BHPhoto instead.  The winner of the reflector will be randomly drawn at the end of January.

Off Topic / How Money Works Video - Help me find the video!? :(
« on: December 26, 2012, 17:12 »
I thought someone once posted it here, or perhaps I saw it elsewhere.  It was an interesting and educational little video that showed how banks works, how money is 'created' and where money comes from.

Does anyone know which video I am talking about.  It was a narration and quite a bit of cartoon animation.

General Stock Discussion / Do you purposly keyword mistakes?
« on: December 14, 2012, 06:52 »
What I am thinking about is if you use keywords that you know people will search for but are technically wrong.

A tomato is technically a fruit.. does that mean you should leave out the keyword vegetable?  In reality it seems like spam to use the keyword fruit as buyers will most likely be searching for vegetable and tomato if the image is of a tomato you eat.
How about if you have a shot of a Mule, would you use the keyword Donkey?  They aren't the same animal.
Or if you had a spider, would you keyword it with insect?
How about shooting a heifer, would you keyword with cow? A heifer isn't a cow

My philosophy has been that I need to keyword so the buyers can find what they are looking for.  I would guess that a number of buyers searching for donkeys would be quite happy with an image of a mule, or perhaps they are actually looking for a mule but don't know the difference.  Someone looking for a female bovine species may just do a broad search for cow .. if you left out that word on an image of heifer, you'd loose out on a sale... when really they just want bovine animals, not necessarily cows.

Anyhow, what are your thoughts?

The first time I submitted my tax form (2009) it was approved within a week.  I had to recently resubmit the form (you apparently have to renew it every 3 years on Fotolia) and it has been sitting there for now close to 3 weeks.   Has anyone has a tax form approved recently?  How long did it take?

General Stock Discussion / What are your goals for 2013?
« on: November 30, 2012, 06:39 »
Microstock or otherwise, what are your goals for 2013?

Are you going to shoot more or less than 2012?  Invest in something else, invest more in micro, spend time on something completely different?

For me, 2012 was a good year for stock and I'm going to continue investing in it.  I think investing 50% of my stock income back into shooting  / production is a realistic goal to shoot for.  This year was closer to only 40%.  Stock is still my #1 income source by far so I feel it is really worthwhile nurturing and trying to keeping growing it while it still seems like a viable income.

Another important goal for 2013 which I'd like to aim for is to shoot every week.  If I don't have a stock shoot set up then I'd be forced to simply go out shooting on the street walking around or in nature or something.  I find that my job is more and more at the computer / sedentary and that isn't what I really want, even if it is enjoyable and comfortable.   I like being 'out in the world' a lot and simply want to do that more.

I also have a couple other shooting projects I'd like to pursue - which I haven't yet as they have a reasonably large financial barrier to entry ($15,000 or so)  Not a huge amount but enough that other investments have been coming first all 2012.  Hopefully in early 2013 I can put that investment first and get started.  I don't want to be too secret-like, but I'm not about to give away my idea in case someone beats me to my own idea (not that it is original mind you).  I'll plan to upload images from the project as stock as well as hopefully getting a few private clients.   I'm sure I'll post about the project on here once I get it started.  This will also hopefully serve as a bit of a solution to diversifying my income to be less dependent on stock.

Adobe Stock / Two changes for Fotolia Submitters
« on: November 27, 2012, 11:56 »
Fotolia just sent out an email with a couple changes.  Most people probably got it but it seems lots of emails get eaten up by the spam bots so here it is if you've missed it

Fotolia is offering you more ways to manage your portfolio.

In the next few days, you'll see two important changes.

First, you will have the option to exclude video files from subscriptions.

Second, the pricing of Extended license files is changing. Extended license files will now have a minimum price of 20 credits, and cannot be priced lower than the largest Standard license price offering.

For example, If the file price for a Standard XXL license is set at 24 credits, the price for an Extended license must be 24 credits or more.

We hope that you take advantage of these features as you continue to sell images on Fotolia.

Best regards,
Team Fotolia

Fortunately it doesn't look like anything negative which often seems to be the case as of late.  Essentially forced higher extended pricing and the option to remove video from subscription licenses.  Two welcomed things.

Dear Contributors,

Over the past few days, Hurricane Sandy has caused significant power outages and damage in the northeast of the United States. Thankfully our customer and contributor websites are functioning normally. However, as our team recovers from the storm, you may experience temporary delays with the review and approval process.

We appreciate your patience and thank you for your understanding.

I'm editing a batch of images that have lots of warning symbols on the machinery.  Does anyone have experience of whether these symbols have to be removed?  I've always removed them in the past to be on the safe side but wonder if they could actually stay.

John Lund just put out a short blog post with a nice little list for reaching success in stock.

I won't quote it all in respect for content rights, but here's the first two
Quote
1. Get your head out of the clouds and understand what images the market needs.

2. Forget waiting for inspiration and get to work making inspiring images.

There are a couple members who can't seem to ignore users.  They can click the 'ignore' button but the posts keep showing up.  other members aren't having problems.

Are you able to ignore another member and hide their posts or is it working for you?  If I can find a pattern to why it's working for some and not for others it will help a fair bit in figuring out a solution.

I got the 4.1 version of ktools installed today and they added a couple nice features like image zoom.. (for example here http://www.realstockphotos.com/photo/194/cavity-dentist-drill.html).  They also fixed a number of bugs and added a number of nice other festures.. but..

They didn't change one of my biggest gripes about ktools .. the search.  Perhaps they feel it works properly as it is  If you search for Dentist Chair you'll get all results that include a chair or dentist or those search terms are any part of the keywords (such as chairman).  The search defaults to 'newest uploaded' so you can get some really irrelevant search results - still a disapointment :(

They did fix the problem with having to log in and click a button every time someone purchases an image though.. which was a HUGE problem before.
