Wow.. it's totally dark when I try to reach Dreamstime. Perhaps they are doing a big server fix or upgrade??

Stocksy / What sort of RPI are you getting?
« on: April 10, 2013, 16:21 »
I know stocksy is just out of the gates but it will be interesting to see this (hopefully) grow over time.

Right now I'm at a (monthly) RPI of 0 :)

Anyone else care to share.  I know some people are gathering a few sales... is it substantial? drops in the ocean??

How was your March?  I had a BME which I am getting to the point where I am thankful every time that happens (as apposed to expecting it) .. the wall is coming soon.  I'll post more detailed stats later today when I have things calculated.

« on: March 20, 2013, 01:35 »
MicrostockGroup was down for a couple hours last night (night for me).  It was a database error which is fixed now so we should be up and running again.  I'll check into it more so hopefully this doesn't happen again.

Site Related / Post Voting Vendetta
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:56 »
It appears some members of the forum have a voting vendetta going.  Voting every post of another member down (or up) without regard for what is written.  If you are seen doing this, your voting privileges will be revoked.

Photoshop Tutorials / How to Change the Background
« on: March 08, 2013, 02:44 »
Here is a pretty novice tutorial I just did explaining how to swap out a background in a photo.  Yes, I 'cheated' and used an easy to isolate image but any image is possible with the same technique - it just takes more fiddling if your background is busy and/or the same color of what you are trying to isolate.

If you have a better way or suggestions for isolating the subject I'm happy to hear them.

Here's a nice little video I found today about a camera collector

I know there have been a few discussion in the past but things change and progress and I also wanted to set up a poll.

In the past I've thought that I needed / wanted a paper release but have been wondering lately if a digital release woudn't be so bad.  You could still print out the digital release and it would be signed by the model.. it just wouldn't have ink from a pen on it.  Banks and post office's use a digital signature - it must be legally binding.

Thoughts?

If you are using a digital release, which one are you using?

Site Related / History Graphic Now Shows 12 Month History
« on: March 06, 2013, 08:52 »
If you look at the top of the site under Polls you'll see the option to 'submit vote' .. to submit your earnings amounts for last month and 'history graph' .. showing you the ranking history of the various sites - the current rank is what is showing on the sidebar on the right.

I had it set to 7 months of history previously but have increased it now to 12 months.

I think we can see some definite trends.  Shutterstock is going up, iStock is going down and DepositPhotos is bouncing like a yo-yo

MicrostockSubmitter / Submit one release per model for Dreamstime
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:20 »
Is there any hope of having the option of grouping releases so only one release is submitted per model as per Dreamstime's (crazy) requirement?

Cameras / Lenses / Is equipment insurance worthwhile?
« on: February 18, 2013, 09:34 »
Currently I have insurance on my equipment, but every year when the premium is due I reconsider whether it is really worthwhile.  Currently I'm paying $1,526 on $40,000 of equipment (3.8%) with a $1,200 deductable.  The insurance is a dummy insurance so it covers everything, even if I were to drop it on a concrete floor.  The problem is, for most small accidents the damage isn't going to be over $1,200.  My 70-200 f/2.8 dropped out of my backpack on concrete once and I sent it to repair and the cost was $500 or so... so insurance didn't help.

I feel the only time I'd really find the insurance useful is if my entire gear bag was stolen while shooting or someone came into my house and took all my gear.  In those cases insurance would be very nice but I've also heard that if you can afford to replace something, insurance probably isn't worth it.  It would certainly hurt but I could probably afford to replace most of my equipment if I had to.

Thoughts?  Do you have equipment insurance?  How much are you paying?

Food Photography Master class by Jamie Oliver

They don't really give any tips or anything, more of just watching Jaimie and David in action.  I always liked Jaime Oliver's style and the photography is real and unstaged.  A fun little vid.

I have a simple little directory site for wedding photographers in Norway and I'm having a logo made.  I can't for the life of me decide which is better.  Logo 1 or 2.  The site/logo should appeal to brides, but also to the photographers who will have their businesses listed on the site.

Stocksy / Bruce, Our Knight in Shining Armor? Stocksy Co-op
« on: February 07, 2013, 04:43 »
Wow.. a little bird whispered in my ear about a new start up that is arriving on the scene.  A CO-OP microstock agency .. backed by none other than the grandfather of microstock.

I know only as much as the splash page reveals but I'm already as excited as a 5 year old at Christmas.

Site Related / StockPerformer 3month Eagle Membership Give-Away
« on: February 01, 2013, 06:26 »
Here's a little give-away for anyone who is interested.

StockPerformer has offered to give away a 3 month Eagle membership (value: 87EUR, or approx $117) to one MicrostockGroup member.  To pick the winner I thought I'd do the following...

Anyone who is signed up to either the weekly or daily MicrostockGroup email updates will be entered into the draw.  These updates are relatively new and even though I'm on the forum all the time I've actually found them quite useful.  I'm signed up to both because I want to see what is being sent out to everyone, but I've actually found them quite usefull.  The email simply highlights the top 5 (daily email) or 10 (weekly email) forum threads.  Often a thread can become popular without me even realizing it and the daily email makes me take note.

So, if you are interested, you can sign up here
http://eepurl.com/bRqiz

If you've already signed up to the email you'll get a notice that you have to click a link to update your preferences.

I'll make the draw randomly next friday from everyone who is signed up to the weekly or daily email list.  If you don't like the daily/weekly emails after that, you can just unsubscribe.

General Stock Discussion / Microstock Earnings Thread Jan. 2013
« on: February 01, 2013, 04:51 »
How was your January?

Here are a few stats from me
Dreamstime - 6.3%
iStock - 8%
the 'others'  - 12%
Shutterstock 44%
Bigstock - 2%
123RF - ?? I'm not sure, I haven't been able to see my earnings
Fotolia - 16%
DepositP - 3%

I love that Shutterstock is doing so well, but I'm not sure the contributer wins anything by having one agency so dominant.  It is almost like being exclusive.. without being exclusive.  Alamy had a few good sales this month.  I still really like them and love that they give the photographers a fair 50% of the sale.

Overall income was up about 20% from December 2012 (not surprising) and about about the same about from Jan 2012. The goal this year is to keep the income above 2012 levels.

As always, don't forget to vote in the monthly poll

Site Related / Yearly Stock Awards? What should they be called?
« on: January 17, 2013, 04:56 »
Microbius started a thread suggesting there be a yearly stock awards for a number of categories.  I think it's a great idea and so do obviously a lot of others.

What should they be called?

... taking suggestions and I'll create a poll in this thread with the ideas once a few come in.
