Off Topic / Translation help?
« on: December 01, 2008, 15:33 »
Is there anyone out there who can help with a few translations?

I have to do a sign for work that shows "Seasons Greetings" in the following languages (but I need the actual font (so I can get it into an illustrator document, not just an english spelling of it)

Farsi
Urdu
Vietnamese
Arabic
Tamil

I have found a bunch already in various other languages, but the ones above, I could not find in any free online translations.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks much and "Seasons Greetings"!

Penny

I get maybe four sub sale per month, but almost fell over when I checked last week. I had one sale that netted $24.00. I thought I was having double vision!

scuse me?  :o

as quoted by yourself....

Some peoples humour is hidden in sarcasm which is not funny at all.
Words that we read can be well meaning and good humoured but in fact ends up being totally misunderstood and insulting to the reader.

Thanks everyone for the info!    ;D Took me all morning, but I have found (and spoke to them directly) a branch of Bank of America located right across the border (rainbow bridge) in Niagara Falls, who can open a bank account for a Canuk. (not all banks and branches do this apparently)

Wow! That took me four hours, my friends on the internet and a great telephone long distance plan to get that info?

Was this simpler to do things back in the 50s and 60s? I can't imagine doing this without the net or long distance plans. but back then, I guess you didn't do what we do today. I'd probably be stuck in a dark room and canning peaches/ironing shirts and going to pta meetings in between.

Ok... no luck! Called both Wells Fargo and JP Morgan. Both tell me that I must go into a branch to open an account because I do not have a US Sin number (no US address necessary).  ok, fine, I try find a branch that I can drive to near Niagara Falls (Ontario Border crossing) Neither (they claim?) have a branch in Buffalo, New York State or even in the upper New York State at all.  Would I be willing to come to Ohio, or Texas ??? Uh - NO

Sorry, southern cousins... No wonder the banking system is going t*ts up???  You can't get there from here.

How bad is Bank of America? They have a branch in Buffalo.

I need to open a US bank account (in the USA) to transfer my paypal money into, so I can withdraw my US dollars out when I go on vacation. (paypal won't transfer US dollars into a Canadian US dollar bank account.)

With the Canadian dollar so weak at $0.77 cents, I want to retain my photo money in US dollars so I don't have to pay the conversion.

A lot of banks are in trouble in the US so I don't know which bank to pick. Can any of my neighbours south of the Canadian border help me out with the name of a secure bank that has branches in most major cities/locations?

Will probably open the account in Niagara or Buffalo or somewhere just below the border.

Thanks everyone and regards
Penny

I didn't know that either - thanks for the tip Sharply.

Hi Avava:  I was just jaded that day -  I've been doing this part-time for a while, and like everyone else here, its just nice to bitch once in a while when you get fed up because of things that you have no control over, like the odd rejection you don't agree with or best match shake ups, or new inspectors, or mergers, economic failure in general etc. etc. etc.

Thanks for your words, I'm back in the saddle.

^^ bitter much?

??? - what do you mean? and directed to who?

Besides... I feel better now  - thanks for listening everyone! Bad hair day; we all have them I'm sure?

Ok... Haven't been able to get a photo accepted by Fotolia since June. - TOAST

Snapvillage is a waste of time - one or two subscription a month. - TOAST

Shutterstock - .66 cents a day but not on weekends - TOAST

so that leaves me with StockXpert, (love them) but they've just been bought by Getty so its iStock in reality. AMALGAMATED TOAST + all I've been getting are subscription sales for .30 lately - so looks like they sold us down the river.

Bigstockphoto has been giving consistent sales lately, but they hold my photos for 90 day. TOO BIG A COMMITMENT TOAST

Dreamstime - good sales but must hold my photos for 6 months - ALMOST MARRIAGE TOAST and no prenup!

So... Look like I'm ready to doane the crown !

Sigh... anyone else fed up lately?

No Sean... I meant mere mortals heading for silver newbs like me, not diamond newbs.

And yes, I've had a good time at all the iStock events too. I hope they don't ever exclude Non-exclusives. These are a fabulous learning opportunity and a great way to meet fellow iStocker. (if you get to know them, people won't be so quick to judge)

It stands to reason that if they are helping defer costs, that you only upload the shots to IS. Thats only fair and reasonable plus you agree to that prior. Other sites allow you to have "exclusive" images.

The minilypses in Toronto were quite large (limited to 20 photographers) and there is never "any" question at the time of registration whether you are exclusive or not.

The larger lypses ie for Diamond and up, is understandable too. If I were diamond, I would like an event where I could concentrate on what I was doing instead of helping a bunch of newbs.

Well... I've been to two minilypse in Toronto and I'm not exclusive. I tell you I've never met a nicer bunch of people, (different bunches at each one) that were so helpful and willing to share tips, advice, suggestions - there were even inspectors there. And I don't feel I got treated any different then any exclusive in attendance.

I have great respect for all those people and am "Really" looking forward to the next lypse that I can get to!

Fabulous Events - Thanks iStock !

Don't know how well this works, but the price is right. Don't think it would be good enough for stock, but if you just want to preserve your family memories?

I would like to do the same thing. Please post on how you make out - prices and quality etc.?  Thanks.

actually, I'm doing ok there. It seems to go in fits and starts but I'm getting payouts regularly now.

Don't think I'm making any more at Shutterstock.

Good questions Hali... I'm not a tech expert but...

I've got 3 batteries that I won't charge until they get to the bottom bar (which is almost crap out time on my D300) and I rotate them. I usually upgrade my camera before any of the batteries wear out (ouch) but this time I think I'll keep my current camera for a while. (Henrys have that half back trade up thing that makes it irresistable to me). I think one is almost a goner, but I think it was left over from my previous camera. I do a lot of "chimping" on my screen, so thats hard on the batteries.

Cards... Got 3 - a 4, 2 and 1. I always use the 4 gig, but the only time I format it (them) is before a big shoot. I usually delete individual shots as I run out of room for every day.

I've got one of those card reading storage devices which is a Wolverine 80 gigs that I take if I'm doing a big shoot like an iStock minilypse, but I also take my card reader and back up to a laptop to be safe, if I'm off sight before I format the card. I've never had a card fail yet. I'm always popping them in and out too.

Thanks Pixart and Hali. Sounds like lovely spots. Hope the rain holds off a bit - we'll see where I can get to. Just in case, I'm bringing my Alien Bees and worst comes to worst, I can take pictures in the hotel room. Dam... knew I should have got the "ring flash".

I love heading off to strange places for an adventure. Ottawa sounds very big to my Son. We live in a small town albeit an hour north of Toronto. I've been coast to coast in Canada, although never spent time in the prairies other than Alberta. I've ridden horses through the rockies and through the forests of PEI.

Newfoundland is on my bucket list. I hear it is magnificent !

We still do the wood thing for heat (50%) and I have lived in many a place in my younger days with no indoor plumbing. If we ever get together Hali, we can arm wrestle. heheh.

Thanks again for the info!
Penny

Hi All:

I'm going to Ottawa for University tours with my Son for 3 days and will have some time to visit some of the Museums and Our Parliament buildings. Does anyone know whether the are any restrictions on shooting in any of these places? or can suggest any great places to see through the lens. Looks like its going to pee rain all the days I'm there. poop. I wanted to get up to the Gatineaus.

Thanks
Penny
