Nelson, I agree with berryspun; nowadays I find myself using a tripod for almost every photo, even on a sunny day at the beach. Results are always just that little bit sharper, even at 1:250th F11 on a sunny beach.
Your D70s is a noisy camera, and even noisier if you shoot RAW. Don't even bother. Turn down all the camera processing algorithms to 'zero', ie sharpening, saturation etc and go out and shoot a few jpegs and RAWs and compare the results.
With my D200 I shoot only jpegs. I've been through the RAW stage. So long as I can get exposure spot on, my jpeg results are as good if not better than RAW. I never use noise reduction, ever.
Also, watch out for that zoom lens. Try using a standard 50mm and compare it with that zoom. I use a 60mm micro for 70% of my shots, whether macro, medium or even portraits. My next lens will be the 35mm F2 or even one of the old 35mm F1.4 if I can find a good one.
If you keep everything simple the results improve. Good lens, tripod, zero settings, correct exposure.

Freezing, you should never divulge an interesting business idea unless you have confidence that the other parties will not take that idea for themselves. On the other hand it is sometimes difficult making business decisions without the advice of others. It all comes down to whom you trust, or not.
There might be one or two people on this forum whom you trust enough to share that idea.
Leaf might be a good start.

Currently I only upload to IS, SS and DT.
I hate the fact that FT misleads by publishing that 2.5 mill headline figure (lying *insult removed*), but looking through their top sales list, it does seem that they are making sales.
Anyone here noticed any trends at FT recently (increased or decreased sales)?

Waiting for approval list is still up at 35,000. My own uploads have continued as before, but the waiting time for approval seems to have lengthened considerably. I've got 28 in the list, the largest number ever, even though I am uploading at the same rate.
It's all very well attracting such huge numbers of images. But can they get the customers?
A quick look at the 'most popular' list shows downloads of the biggest sellers at very small levels.

I have only been there a week, but of my initial 84 approved images, 58 have been downloaded. That's 69%.

That sounds like the right approach to me Tom. I am not convinced that uploading to munerous agencies is efficient use of time and energy; oarticularly the small ones who make only occasional sales. Better to invest that time in creating images.
I have always believed that IS would produce the goods over and above all the others, and my initial experience is that those thoughts were correct. It is slow and tedious (and frustrating) getting established there, but it is the only agency where I have had designers write to me about my images. Istock seems to have a massive customer base, and that is what is needed to produce sales.
I started with DT and IS at the same time (first week of February). Although I have many more images up at DT, IS has produced double the income and is already producing downloads at an average of 2.2 per day (which I am pleased with after only six weeks).
My third agency is SS following your recommendation. 156 downloads in my first eight days. But I suspect that this will tail off as per everyone else's experience on this board, unless I can upload like a furious maniac (but I do not have the library to be able to do that).

Your experience seems to be the same as everyone else on this board Penny.
I suppose SS have a bunch of clients who want to download everything, so once uploads stop so do the downloads.
Only answer to that is to upload furiously on a constant basis I suppose. But I think that might take some of the pleasure out of what we do.

Glad its improving for you Lee. I've had a quick look at my keywords etc and everything seems fine. I have been uploading three or four images every day as usual but DT has comnpletely died for me. Was making what I thought was good progress until about a week ago.
Perhaps its just a phase.

I know I have only been uploading to SS for a week or so. But so far the speed of the thing is surprising me. I heard so many stories about huge rejection rates etc etc. Yet they are accepting almost all of my images and approving within hours. This surprises me - its not what I expected. Huge numbers of downloads too. How can they accept so many images so quickly?
It took me six weeks to get 60 images up at IS. At SS I've got 80 in six or seven days.
Does SS publish a waiting list etc like some of the other agencies do?

Well DT is still dead (for me). Saw their statistics page; a whopping 37,000 images waiting to be approved. No wonder things are taking so long. And no wonder they've reduced the number of images people can submit. Have the price increases caused this rush?
At the same time, the waiting list at IS has declined from 30,000 to 20,000 and I am finding my images being accepted more quickly than ever before.

At SS my images are being accepted so quickly it's frightening - acceptance usually within hours. And almost every image is being accepted; out of 80 submissions I have had only 2 declines. That doesn't tie in with all the stories of difficulty, noise, high rejections etc.
So something is going on. Or perhaps I am just suspicious in my old age.....
I expect to see price and commission increases at SS and eventually at IS. Competition seems rife....

Interesting comments from everyone. I've just taken a look through the latest exclusive uploads, and - yes - there are lots of holiday snaps and many images which are borderline quality (IMHO).
It remains the case that iStock appears to have the customers. Where else can an image get 1,000, 2,000 or even 3,000 downloads in a three month period (looking at the top downloads list).

Hey, calm down everyone. You know I was talking in a general sense. Sheesh...
Look at it this way. iStock has 1.5 mill images accepted out of a total of 3 mill sent in. Someone has had to pay good money to examine and reject half of 3 mill.
A diamond exclusive is allowed to submit 200 images a week. Why? Because they hardly need looking at.
A 30% profit from a diamond exclusive is a more valuable and reliable business asset than a 70% profit from the other 80% of contributors.
