General Stock Discussion / This poor guy.

I'm sure everyone in the U.S. has seen this image by now. https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/photo/concept-of-sars-cov-2-or-2019-ncov-coronavirus-royalty-free-image/1208953647

What's funny is that there's never a photo credit or attribution attached. So I thought I'd do some digging. The first use was Hungarian, from Getty images. The funny thing is though, when you go to that page on getty it doesn't appear that we can license it in the U.S and a local radio station JUST used it this morning.

So, what are you guys doing with your quarantine time? lol.

General Stock Discussion / The race to the bottom
« on: March 18, 2019, 21:07 »
I think I might just move everything to Adobe Stock. Has anyone gone exclusive FT/AS? I haven't contributed work since ... well since whenever I realized that SS royalties were only 12.5 cents and I've got a hell of alot better things to do than sorting and uploading all of these for pennies. I like the quarters rolling in though ... and like the way that they're doing it (as a contributor AND a buyer). Even the subscription price seems more legitimate than the pricing model at other places.

I'm listening to this Seth Godin thing he said something like "The problem with the race to the bottom, is you might actually win"

I get like ... 2 payouts a year, like why . do I care. The self hosted site paid for itself and let me have at least the freedom of what to do ... I'm about sick of this crap.

This would/should have gone in a self-hosting sub forum but, there isn't one.

For the past few months we've been setting up our server to provide web hosting services and the like. We provide free SSL, some great WordPress options and .... etc.

I wanted to post it here because I know some are still self-hosting using symbiostock, woo, or easy digital downloads ... etc. Our prices are very competitive, it's an empty server so the speed is great. We just need some people to get the ball rolling. I've written a little mission statement if it matters much.

"We believe in helping everyone get the best website and hosting service that they can afford. Were here for the little guy, the small businesses, those that need reliable and affordable service to help their dreams get off the ground. We offer design, development, hosting, SEO and maintenance services."

Anyway, sorry for the lame promo message but, I'd love to get some of you guys on board. Thanks for reading.

Off Topic / ugh ... end of the year ... accounting.
« on: December 31, 2017, 20:28 »
So ... third year freelancing and now SP. Do you guys that do Micro alongside other business activities count the micro accounts as accounts payable (EDIT: receivable)? I rarely have sales and have only had a couple payouts, so it definitely wouldn't be a "current" asset but, an asset nonetheless. I so far haven't added or tracked the microstock accounts at all ... since I've counted payouts as business profits I should count them as receivables though I'd imagine.

In the past, I've done everything on spreadsheets and such which has been fine but, it's getting more confusing as clients grow and receivables are starting to get overlooked so as the year starts I'm thinking I should invest in some bookkeeping software or I'm kind of toying with GNUcash ... it seems a bit confusing though, and adding everything seems like a real pain.

General Stock Discussion / In Search of ...

I'm trying to find this Scott Maxwell feller that makes these little gold guys.

https://us.fotolia.com/search?p=20394

I had found them posted on a blog or something last year, tried to email him about cost on a custom one and never heard back. We've used it for our local newspaper annual contest thing for years and tonight I can't find a 2017 one anywhere. At this point it's branded the contest pretty heavily :/

General Stock Discussion / Advice please, don't burn me too hard.
« on: November 09, 2016, 23:53 »
Hey guys, I know I'll probably get run out of here crying when I visit this tomorrow but, I've been getting some increasing business for product photographs ... where I was mostly just shooting family/friend portraits and scenery ... So I invested in a couple lights (new 55000k office bulbs as well) and one of those little pop up light tents.

As far as stock goes, I'll probably just randomly shoot whatever I find around to be interesting that day/week/month I shot these single solar cells a week or so ago, and thought you guys might have some advice or something ...

edit: guess I should link it. https://us.fotolia.com/id/125340483

Shutterstock.com / Someone should do something
« on: May 21, 2016, 13:16 »
I've been getting quite a bit of photo editing work through Fiverr recently but, it's about ... once a day or so that I run in to something like this and can't find a simple way to report it (the intellectual property support thing asks a bunch of questions about, copyright and trademark). Where this is not only unethical, immoral and against the ToS of all parties involved. It's also illegal in most countries, seems like there should just be a simple way to have an admin take one second of their day to look at it. Maybe someone up there in the chain of supporty type things can find a solution.

123RF / Uhh ...
« on: March 08, 2016, 07:19 »
So like ... not that I needed a real reason to delete my portfolio or anything but, you're going to let the contributors bear all of the weight of poor reviews over a copyright issue? I'm not entirely sure who this company is (though I think I've seen that on soy sauce before) ... your agency, reviewers and other employees need to bear as much of the weight of this as any single person. That's ridiculous.

I suppose some of the people here that I talk to already know but, I have never really planned on selling photography. I'm a designer, I just ... don't intend to be a photographer but, I've been getting a bit of attention because I have a little herd of models. Is this sort of thing worth any money? I mean ... some of the location oriented spots and others (clothing and things) would need to be editorial but ... I guess I've all but given up on stock so it really doesn't matter much ... I've just been grooving on shooting the kids. lol.

I'm not sure what you're trying to get at Dallas. When an artist sells their image to a stock photo company then anyone can buy the rights to that photo. When you purchase an image you agree to their TOS which in this case is for unlimited usage: AN...See More

Actually Dallas, No this is not my logo. My logo is a word. This is just a pic that is purchased and used under license without limitation and incorporated into merchandise as artwork. Nothing illegal, or unethical about it! Yes, the original artist still maintains all intellectual rights of the image but once he sells a pic the purchaser has right to use that pic in any way outlined in the TOS. Yes, I was only giving an example of a standard TOS...which is pretty much the same across the board. But regardless, I have the legal right to use this picture as a purchaser of the stock photo. That is why artists sell their photos in the first place! Good night and thanks for hijacking my post!

We drove out for some family photos this evening for some shots. I got a few good ones but, tons of grain in some. Thinking I still want a new (or new to me) camera in a month or so. Anyone selling their old equipment or have suggestions for working with my crap camera.

To sum up 2014 in one word interesting. Designers never really stop working Even when we entirely disconnect ourselves its always a subconscious process Some designers do fairly well with letting go of past projects and disconnecting themselves with current work. While others, myself included, can dwell on them until we are literally sick.

Photography Equipment / SLR window shopping
« on: January 07, 2015, 11:23 »
I was just kind of window shopping some SLR cameras on Ebay and noticed that the T3i and D3200 cameras have dropped pretty significantly in price since the last time I got curious.

I doubt I would be shooting much for microstock but, more for my own collection, family, friends and the like ... Is there any reason not to jump on say http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nikon-D3200-Camera-Kit-w-AF-S-VR-DX-18-55mm-lens-L-/291345854093?pt=Digital_Cameras&hash=item43d590ee8d or one of the others that include a lens?

20 Epic Advertisement Designs

I thought Id do something a little bit different this week and share with you some advertisements that I think are really cool. It takes a lot of work to become a brand that can pull these off, and the ad agencies that do them communicate the message clearly, and in some cases with only art and a logo. Its pretty incredible.

I finally got accepted at Shutterstock! Couple sales from Wednesday to now with only 7 files up, I'm super stoked and hopefully it'll give me some motivation.

Anyhow, I've found twitter to be a decent way to attract traffic and "followers" however, the shuttertweet thing seems to be broken and I can't sign up. I haven't contacted support yet because, I figured someone here would have a reasonable answer or solution.
