iStockPhoto.com / No sales reported today on Istock
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:09 »
I don't see any sales reported today on Istock - last sale I see is from yesterday. I usually have around 10 sales per day... Did sales stop or reporting is broken? Anyone else seeing this?

General Stock Discussion / How long are reviews on 500px?
« on: March 18, 2016, 13:23 »
I have occasional sales on 500 prime and considering uploading more photos...
However, when I upload and submit my photos for sale, they seem to sit in the queue forever. Last summer, after waiting 2 months for my images to be reviewed, and had to contact them to inquire if there is anything wrong with my submissions. My images got reviewed and I was told that it should normally take 2-4 weeks. Next time, I waited longer than 2 months before contacting the agency again. My images got reviewed and I was told that I am the only one experiencing such delays since nobody else reporting them. My next wait was over 4 months. I submitted an image on Oct 9, 2015 and it was not reviewed until I sent them another email on Feb 12, 2016.

Please share your experiences with 500 prime review times. If I am the only one experiencing this, then I would need to contact the agency again and find out why my images are given this "special" treatment.

Shutterstock.com / Cap on daily earnings?
« on: September 18, 2015, 21:06 »
Not sure if fellow conspiracy theorists here discussed this topic already... but it looks to me there is a cup on daily earnings on SS - well at least something funny is going on. This morning I had a couple of large SODs and a couple of extended license sales, nice surprise, no complaints there. But after that my downloads just stopped - never seen anything like that before, and by the end of the day, even though I had a nice total, if you subtract the SODs and extended sales I ended up with the total well below my daily usual, even for a Friday.
It seems to me once you images sold up to certain daily amount they push your portfolio down the search results??
Would hate to think that I am working for a salary and can't grow because someone there decided how much they should pay me.
Anyone else with large ports and tin foil hats seen anything like that?

I thought FAA let you set your own prices for prints and didn't add anything on top apart from printing/framing and shipping charges. Am I mistaken? It looks like they are adding anywhere from 12 to 20% on top of my markup!
Here is what I see (FAA's markup on top my markup in brackets):
My markup   FAA "print price"
8"  - $30           35  (5)
10" - $40          45  (5)
12" - $50          60  (10)
14" - $75          87  (12)
16" - $100      115 (15)
20" - $125      142 (17)
24" - $150      170 (20)
30" - $175      197 (22)
36" - $225       252 (27)
40" - $250       280 (30)

So, while they advertise that they are being "fair" to artists and pay 100% of print price, they sneak up they own percentage on top of the price they present to the customer. And here is silly me thinking that I charge $250 for a 40" print when in fact it's $280. Not amused. Do they explain this additional markup anywhere - why it is there? Seriously, you want to get extra money - increase my annual fee, but don't burden my customers with additional mysterious charges!

General Stock Discussion / ImageBrief "premium" membership
« on: August 11, 2015, 11:40 »
ImageBrief is closing their "founding premium program" on Aug 14... I have a basic account there and never managed to earn anything, although been "shortlisted" a number of times. To upgrade to "premium" is $500 a year. Anyone here holds their "premium" account? And if yes did it help at all with getting sales?
Thanks in advance.

General Photography Discussion / Can you do that??...
« on: June 02, 2015, 10:42 »
Apparently it's ok to take any instagram photo and sell it as your own "artwork"! I guess we've been missing out ... <sarcasm>

General Stock Discussion / Requests to use images for free
« on: May 12, 2014, 11:42 »
I often get emails from people asking if they can use one or few of my images for free on their web sites, blogs, their future company logos, and so on. Usually what's offered in return is "credit" - they promise to put my name next to the photo, or put a link to my website.
It really puzzles me. You can buy a small size image for a price of a coffee these days. No one walks into a coffee shop and asks for a cup of coffee for free and in return just offers to tell their friends that they got a coffee from that shop. It doesn't even occur to people. Why do they think they can use the product of my work for free? I don't understand. I don't care about credit  - if I wanted to be famous, I wouldn't be shooting stock, plus I doubt very much that my name on their webpage would make any difference whatsoever. If I was begging on the street, they'd drop a few coins into my cup - but they wouldn't pay the same few coins for the image they like!
How did this attitude even come into existence??

I was wondering if anyone is using Photoshelter to sell stock photos, particularly Rights-Managed, and what is your experience?
Thanks in advance!

Photoshop Discussion / Text in jpeg files
« on: November 15, 2013, 19:32 »
While browsing some files on stock agencies, especially on Shutterstock, I noticed that many contributors have "Sample text" or "Your text here" text in their images... which I presume means that I am supposed to be able to modify that text after downloading the file. But I am downloading a JPEG - how does the text layer get preserved there?? I thought JPEGs were supposed to be flat... Can someone please enlighten me? :-)

Mostphotos.com / How to contact Mostphotos support?
« on: August 01, 2013, 16:20 »
Anyone had success contacting Mostphoto's support recently? I've been trying to contact them since May about a financial issue, and didn't get any reply whatsoever. I used [email protected] and [email protected] email addressed, their web form, tried to reach Arian through LinkedIn - nothing. Any help would be appreciated.

General Stock Discussion / Blend images selling on micros?
« on: April 24, 2013, 11:36 »
I just read John Lund's newest blog post here: http://blog.johnlund.com/2013/04/choosing-stock-photo-agency.html
Apart from other things, he is saying:
"With Blend my images not only get a wider audience with both RF and RM content on Getty, Corbis, Masterfile, Superstock and God knows how many other distributors, but I also get my images up on Microstock sites at macro prices. How cool is that? The eyeballs appear to be migrating to places like Shutterstock, Fotolia and others. With Blend Images, without any additional work, I get representation on Shutterstock, Fotolia, iStockphoto and others."

I didn't know Blend was selling through micros - anybody knows how to find their files on Shutter or Fotolia? I would presume they would be in some kind of "special" collections?

Adobe Stock / Fotolia earnings lower than Dreamstime
« on: February 11, 2013, 10:40 »
Based on the first week of February my Fotolia earnings are lower than earnings on Dreamstime.... For the first time in 7 years. And I have less files on DT  - 11,676 versus 13,160 on Fotolia. I guess lowering the prices for emeralds didn't help them with their sales...
Sad - Fotolia used to be among my top 3 earners, sometimes number 1.

Shutterstock.com / Files not online for several days?
« on: November 26, 2012, 11:24 »
My last batch was approved on SS on Nov 20; today is 26th, but the images still not showing in my portfolio or any search results - is this usual? I had delays maybe for a day before, but not for almost a week!

Shutterstock.com / Are new images selling on Shutterstock?
« on: May 07, 2012, 10:12 »
My recent batches accepted during last month are not selling at all on SS.  They do sell well on all my other agencies. What's your experience - do new files have a chance of making it on SS these days? I still have very nice overall sales there, but it's all my old portfolio...

iStockPhoto.com / Istock doesn't show new sales
« on: November 25, 2011, 13:10 »
Hmmm... for a few days now every time I go to "My uploads" page and try to sort by "Last DL" it shows me the same page ending with 01/11/2011. My total shows there's been many sales since then, but they don't show on the page! Anyone else is seeing this?

I got Nikkor 50 and 85 mm 1.4 lenses and the stupid things don't focus properly when wide open - focus is in the front by 2-3 inches at least! Took them to the Nikon service center with my D3X, they adjusted the AF on the camera a bit and told me there are no problem with lenses. I take it home, try again - same crap! My 24-70 mm focuses just fine open at 2.8 on the same camera body. I tried AF fine-tune, but even that is not enough to compensate for the front-focusing. You focus on person's eye and get a tip of their nose if you're lucky, but most of the time something in the front, like folds of clothes, etc...
Anyone else seen problems like that?

Nikon / NIKKOR 300mm f2.8 G AFS ED VR II Lens
« on: August 30, 2011, 13:56 »
Anyone has 300mm f2.8 G AFS ED VR II Lens? Am thinking of getting it, wondering if anyone had any experience with it. It seems quite heavy (about 3 kg) and bulky, but they claim you can shoot hand-held with it. Anyone tried? I would like to use it hand-held, for some action shots...

I don't think I'll ever complain about a stock agency again. Now that I am selling images from my own site I understand how much time and pain in the ass it takes to deal with clients' special requests, questions, legal considerations, technical problems and so on. Not mentioning time and money needed to attract those customers to the site in the first place. You know, the cut that a good-selling agency takes is very well-deserved. We are lucky we can get money for our creative work and not be bothered with all that stuff. Seriously.
I think it was worth it getting my own site going just to realize that:)
