Here's a link.  To think that I'm one of the poor saps that paid for Viveza then got a free upgrade to the collection.

That sounds great to me.  I used a trial version for a while and a couple of those tools were doing good things for me.

Wow! This is big. Thanks for the heads-up.
It's always good to have an extra tool in your tool-box.

Hmm... I'm not getting my hopes up for any great enhancements or new products in the suite now that this has happened. I'd rather that they keep on charging if it means they're going to keep developing the tools. Ah well, they're pretty much indispensable already.

Great news if you like free stuff. Possibly not such great news if you are a developer working on a competing paid product.

It's the same arguments as exist around people giving away photos.

If they were to open source it then that would be a different set of arguments.

etc, yada-yada

wowww indeed -- even a refund for recent buyers!

Sorry, but if that alone doesn't sound too good to be true then what is? Where is the catch here? C'mon people, this still is Google, and they have never ever done anything for free without a hidden agenda (collecting our data, violating our Privacy, forwarding to Big Brother what's actually ours etc)...

Hope no one here is going to be too disappointed when the next whistleblower comes along telling us what really was behind this "change in policy" at Google.

There are still a few people in this world to know the difference between "Free Beer" and "Free Speech". Usually you're given the former so they can make you forget about the latter.

How do you feel about free high quality stock photos? It's the same.

No it's not the same.

Nik Malius sold his project to Google in 2012. He stopped developing it then. Instead of $100 and up a module, Google made it $150 for all. They sold these for two years and probably decided it was time to set them free.

Google claimed they were going to keep developing the Nik Collection. They didn't. Once the sales dropped below the expense and return, giving it away free could be cost cutting. Maybe they are going to introduce a new better collection.

Paint is free. Microsoft dropped it and gave it to the workers. Would you pay for photoscape, irfanview, paint.net, or http://topbestlisted.blogspot.com/2011/09/best-free-photo-editing-softwares.html

Chrome is free, Firefox is free, Flock, Omni, Internet Explorer is free. Do you pay for your browser?

And, just to add to this, all of the people involved with the creation and development of the software above were paid to make it.

So, it has nothing in common with free stock photos.

" If you purchased the Nik Collection in 2016, you will receive a full refund, which well automatically issue back to you in the coming days."

It does not tell you nothing??

Thanks Pauws99 and Chichikov. I thought from google page that downloadable setup is 15 days trial.  I never tried and purchase these plugin.

Anyway, I have downloaded 450mb installation setup. Bundle setup include HHR Efect Pro2, Viveza 2, Sharpener Pro3, Silver Efecx Pro 2, Dfine 2, Color Efet Pro 4, and Analog Efecx Pro2.  Setup installed 8bf(plugin file) and also standalone exe file. Great and awesome plugin.

easy: that's because some of us are more awake than others. More boys-with-toys around here than journalists or ordinary grown-ups with at least some kind of a memory here, it seems.

You do know how long exactly it takes from a Google search to an unsuspicious-looking FBI van pulling up in your driveway on Long Island, NY when you're an outdoors enthusiast and want to buy backpacks and hot water bottles -- don't you?

So, sure you're totally free to dream on your innocent little life like a kid out there, but the above is a fact -- and it shows the kind of "friends" you have in Google :)

Also, as a photographer, you are aware of what metadata is? And you listen to the news every now and then, yes? And you are able to figure out what's 2+2?

(Or maybe you always have to wait for an Edward Snowden to risk his life and "do the math" for you...)

-- just encouraging people to THINK (but I was aware of this being highly unpopular before). Still, there are people even on this forum who know what I mean, so it's not just me...

None of those products is really free. They all have a competitive business model. You use Chrome and Firefox, for example, in exchange for your use being monetized. It's a become a clich - but you are the product and they sell you to the advertisers.

Nik being free undermines all similar paid-for packages. In the same way as free stock photos undermine the business models of those who still try to sell stock photos. Perhaps that is an inevitable outcome. Perhaps it is crazy to still try to charge for software or content.

Always look a gift horse in the mouth, especially if it's from Google.
