In the past I owned both speedotron and balcar studio flashes. After being twenty years old they are now antiquated and not really useable with newer digital cameras. I went down to the local pro-shops here in Los Angeles (Samy's and Calumet). I gave a real hard look at Profoto and Elinchrom. I quickly decided against them at this time due to the fact I would need a to take out a loan to get all of the lights and accessories. While at Calumet the salesperson pointed out their house brand (made by Bowens). They are the monoblock style not too much different from my older balcars bit with more precise control and much less cost. In my conversation with the salesperson he pointed out that these heads use the same mount as Elinchrom so if and when I upgrade to Elinchroms all of my speed rings and reflectors will go with them, something I could not do if I went with Profoto. I came home and started looking at other lower cost mono block heads like the Alienbees. I really liked the service that alien gives their customers but the frequency of problems scared me away. The next week I went back to Calumet and bought two 200ws heads. At $199.00, I felt I really could not get hurt. Once at home I opened up the boxes and started to put the reflectors on the heads. They f2 lug bayonet style, they go on easily and the head itself has a ring that is turned to lock it into place. The reflector does not fit on tightly but that is no a big thing since I will use speed rings with my soft boxes. The heads come with a 150 watt modeling light. With the lights out they give plenty of light, but in daylight; it is hard to see where the shadows are falling. I may try putting in a 250 watt bulb to see if will help out. Being the tech head that I am I put a color chart on some white background paper and started to shoot a shot every ten seconds for a total of ten times. I did this on full, 3/4, 1/2 and 1/4 powers. I imported all of the photos into Adobe lightroom 2.7 and check the color temps on 18% grey and was very happy with the results. All of the shots were within 100 degrees kelvin. After this test I broke out my medium sized soft box (32"x24") and mounted it. It went very easy. I would not recommend any larger SB. I do not know if the head can handle the weight. The standard 7"reflector comes with a hole to mount an umbrella. The umbrella goes into quite easy and there is a lock on the head hold into place. I have nothing but praise for these inexpensive heads and plan on buying two 400ws heads in the near future. http://www.calumetphoto.com/item/CF0502/ shotupdave Thu, 19 Aug 2010 17:11:58 -0700 24-70 f/2.8 http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=39

by: vonkara

Description: Professional, fast aperture, standard zoom lens with SWM for fast and quiet Autofocus. A maximum aperture of f/1.2 makes it the professional's choice for shooting without flash in low light conditions. The large aperture also provides fine control over depth of field for compelling portrait photography. Retaining the impressive optical performance and large aperture of its predecessor, this medium telephoto lens has been improved with a Ring-type USM, high-speed CPU and optimized algorithms to achieve an autofocus speed approximately 1.8x faster than the original. The high-speed AF and circular aperture create a shallow depth-of-field that brings attention to the subject and blurs the background, which is ideal for portraits and weddings. • L-Series The L-series is Canon's flagship professional lens range, combining outstanding image performance and ultimate operability with dust and moisture resistant construction. • Large f/1.2 Aperture The large maximum aperture of f/1.2 provides outstanding speed for shooting in low light conditions, without the need for flash. • Fast and Quiet AF The ring USM uses ultrasonic frequency vibrations to drive extremely rapid auto focus with near-silent operation. A high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms contribute further to AF speed. Full time electronic manual focus override is available without having to switch out of AF. • Super Spectra Coatings Super Spectra lens coatings and lens element shaping suppress flare and ghosting, more prone to occur with digital cameras due to reflection off the image sensor. Coatings also help achieve true color balance and increase contrast for vivid hi-fidelity images. • Aspherical Element The floating optical system, which includes an aspherical lens element, suppresses aberrations and ensures excellent imaging performance. • 9-Bladed Circular Aperture The circular aperture creates a shallow depth-of-field that brings attention to the subject and blurs the background, which is ideal for portraits and weddings. leaf Mon, 06 Jul 2009 02:48:00 -0700 EF 85mm f/1.8 USM http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=35

by: leaf

Description: A highly practical medium telephoto lens with superb delineation and portability. The 12.2 megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor employs large microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and enhance sensitivity up to ISO 1600, while the 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process means the Rebel XSi camera records up to 16,384 colors per channel and allows the camera to produce images with finer and more accurate gradations of tones and colors. The camera also incorporates the Highlight Tone Priority and High-ISO Noise Reduction functions (previously found only on Canon's Professional Digital SLRs) and the camera is equipped with Canon's Auto Lighting Optimizer technology, which corrects image brightness and contrast automatically to prevent underexposure with backlit scenes. The EOS Rebel XSi is fast - capable of continuously capturing 3.5 frames per second for bursts of up to 53 images. The faster frame rates and finer focusing capabilities of the Rebel XSi together with its impressive image burst rate will help photo enthusiasts capture split second action at just the right moment. Furthermore, the camera is equipped with a host of useful creative controls, including shutter speeds ranging from 1/4000 sec. to 30 sec. plus Bulb, a choice of four metering patterns including 4% spot metering, a wide range of exposure modes from fully automatic to fully manual, depth of field preview, mirror lock and much more. The large, 3-inch, 230,000 pixel LCD monitor makes it easier for users to review images and scroll through the menus, and also features a broadened color gamut and a wide viewing perspective in all directions. Furthermore the EOS Rebel XSi camera features Live View - which allows users to frame shots through the LCD screen rather than the viewfinder - this is particularly useful when shooting at odd angles or in situations when looking through the viewfinder is impractical. The Rebel XSi DSLR utilizes Canon's EOS Integrated Cleaning system. This involves a Self-Cleaning Sensor Unit that shakes dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor, along with post processing with the supplied Digital Photo Professional software. Here the camera maps any spots that may remain on the sensor and subsequently subtracting dust spots from the final image during post processing. In a departure from previous EOS Digital Rebel models, which accommodated CF type memory cards, the EOS Rebel XSi camera utilizes SD and SDHC memory cards including those with capacities higher than 2GB, making it the perfect upgrade for users already equipped with SD cards from point-and-shoot model cameras. In addition, it is fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses, as well as EX-series Speedlites, an optional Battery Grip, and remote control and viewfinder accessories. In regards to its overall design, the EOS Rebel XSi camera features a substantial yet streamlined profile, with curved edges, contoured surfaces, conveniently placed controls and comfortably constructed rubber grip and thumb rest that all contribute to fatigue-reducing hand fit. The camera body is constructed of a rugged yet lightweight combination of stainless steel and polycarbonate embedded with glass fiber, and the chassis exterior is enrobed in a durable ABS and Polycarbonate resin that is resistant to impact damage. leaf Fri, 26 Jun 2009 05:25:53 -0700 EOS Rebel T1i (500D) http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=25

by: leaf

Description: The Canon EOS Rebel T1i is the 6th generation of Canon's popular entry-level DSLR camera series and it improves upon earlier Rebels by incorporating many features that up till now could only be found on Canon's pricier mid-level DSLRs. Among the Rebel T1i's key attributes are a 15.1Mp CMOS sensor (similar to the sensor found in the EOS 50D) for detailed, full volume prints, Live View for accurate pre-focusing and editing, continuous burst-rates of up to 3.4 fps, a DIGIC 4 image processor, and a scratch and glare-resistant high-resolution (920,000-dot) 3" Clear View LCD that allows for easy 100% image viewing from angles up to 170° off-center from the screen. The big news however is the Rebel T1i's ability to record a choice of full HD 1080p, 720p, and VGA video capture, which places it among the few DSLRs currently available that can capture true high-resolution video that beats or meets the image quality of far costlier pro camcorders. To help reduce retouching time the Rebel T1i features an EOS Integrated Cleaning System that combats dust through the use of high-frequency vibrations that shake dust loose from the sensor's front-mounted IR filter every time you power up and power down. There are also anti-static coatings on the low-pass filter to keep it shmutz-free, and a body cap designed not to 'shed' particles that can possibly find their way into the mirror chamber. To better enable successful imaging under the most challenging of lighting conditions, the camera's DIGIC 4 Image Processor allows you to set the ISO rating from ISO 100 through 3200 in standard mode, and from 6400 to 12,800 in expanded mode. Once the 9-point wide-area AF system (with cross-type center point) nails the focus you can fire up to 3.4 fps for up to 170 exposures allowing, allowing you the option of capturing longer image sequences. Other image-improving controls include Auto Lighting Optimizer that optimizes shadow details when shooting in contrasty lighting conditions and a Creative Auto mode that allows you to personalize pre-set shooting modes. And regardless of whether you plan on shooting stills or HD video, Canon offers over 60 EF and EF-S lenses and a selection of EX-series Speedlites to satisfy all of your visual and creative needs. leaf Fri, 26 Jun 2009 05:24:11 -0700 EOS 40D http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=24

by: leaf

Description: The Canon EOS 40D SLR Digital Camera is a superb choice for advanced amateur photographers and entry-level professionals. It incorporates an enhanced, 10.1-megapixel CMOS imaging sensor with the proprietary and super-efficient DIGIC III image processor together with a completely redesigned auto-focus sensor. Ideal for shooting - and actually capturing - speed-sensitive subjects such as wildlife-nature shots as well as a wide variety of action and sports scenes, the combination of Canon's latest processor, DDR SDRAM high-speed memory, four-channel-per-line sensor readout, and two separate motors for shutter and mirror operation provides a fast, 6.5 frame-per-second (fps) continuous shooting capability, a top shutter speed of 1/8000 seconds, a fast 0.15-second initial start-up, and nearly instantaneous shutter response. Even with all of this speed, the EOS 40D Digital SLR provides impressive image quality using a 10.1-megapixel CMOS APS-C size image sensor that utilizes large microlenses over each pixel to reduce noise and expand sensitivity up to ISO 3200. Furthermore, the 14-bit Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion process enables the camera to recognize 16,384 colors per pixel for finer and more accurate gradations of tones and colors. Canon's proprietary DIGIC III image processing engine then ensures that the fine details and natural colors of the images are optimally recorded and, as an added bonus, is also responsible for its efficient energy consumption. The Large three-inch 230,000-pixel LCD screen of the EOS 40D provides broad color gamut and a viewing angle of 140-degree perspective in all directions to increase viewing ease in conditions such as bright sunlight. An added advantage of the large display is the ability to use a larger font size for text, making it easier to read setting and menu options. More significantly, the Live View function uses the LCD display to provide an expanded and exceedingly convenient set of shooting options. By permitting the framing and capturing of subjects using the camera's LCD screen instead of the viewfinder, the shooter gains a 100 percent field view to more easily achieve the desired composition, and an added Custom Function allows auto-focus during Live View, and provides the user with the ability to magnify the image by five or ten times in order to ensure optimal focus. Live View is at its best during tripod shooting - particularly for close-up photography where precise focusing is imperative. The EOS 40D is also a boon to more traditional shooters as well with an upgraded viewfinder that has an optical magnification of 0.95x, a viewing angle of 264 degrees and an eye point of 22mm. The enhanced durability of the EOS 40D is attributed to its magnesium alloy exterior with upgraded dust and weather resistant construction, particularly around the camera's connection ports, battery compartment and memory card door. Plus the camera incorporates an extremely durable shutter that has been rated up to 100,000 cycles, The camera also helps to secure it's data from the most common cause of data corruption problems; should the user inadvertently open the CompactFlash card door while the camera is writing to the card, a warning will pop up on the LCD screen and an "alarm" will sound, but the image(s) will continue writing to the memory card without interruption. The EOS Integrated Cleaning System uses ultrasonic vibrations to literally shake dust particles off of the low-pass filter in front of the sensor each time the camera is powered up or shut down. Users also have the option of engaging the "clean now" function at will or bypassing it altogether. Additionally, the manual sensor cleaning function raises the mirror and allows users to clean dust that has stuck to the low-pass filter. The second part of the cleaning system is a software solution that maps the location of any spots that may remain on the sensor. Subsequently, the offending dust information is subtracted from the final image during post processing using the supplied Digital Photo Professional software. The EOS 40D Digital SLR is compatible with the full line-up of Canon EF lenses as well as the expanding selection of high-quality, affordable EF-S lenses created specifically for Canon Digital SLRs with APS-C size image sensors. It is also compatible with any of the EX Speedlite line of flash units and supports the E-TTL II protocol that provides reliable flash output whether shooting fill-in flash pictures in sunlight, or using flash in total darkness. System accessories for the EOS 40D SLR include the redesigned high-capacity BG-E2N Battery Grip, which facilitates high-volume shooting, greater power options, and easier vertical shooting, and the WFT-E3A Wireless File Transmitter which permits wireless transfer and back-up, connection to a GPS receiver, or data transfer to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external storage devices as well as remote control of the camera in Live View mode. Furthermore, the EOS 40D is also the first camera in its class to offer two interchangeable focusing screens in addition to the standard precision matte screen. leaf Fri, 26 Jun 2009 05:21:30 -0700 EOS-1D Mark III http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=23

by: leaf

Description: The Canon EOS-1D Mark III SLR Digital Camera is a robust and durable professional digital SLR camera that uses a unique 10.1 effective megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-H size) with an integrated cleaning system to produce images of stunning quality. The DSLR-A900 starts with a 24 x 35.9mm size CMOS sensor developed especially for this camera. Though that imaging canvas is utterly packed with pixels, the pixels themselves dominate the landscape of the image receiving area, instead of the elements of image sensors which are necessary but not actually collecting the image. Indeed, the A900's pixels are larger than the fine consumer-grade Alpha 700, despite having twice as many pixels. On the physical side of things, the Alpha's designed for professional use: all operations are weather-sealed, its high-performance shutter's tested to 100,000 cycles, and its viewfinder (the forgotten critical SLR element in the age of squinty APS-C size viewfinder dominance) is as good as they come. Despite these claims, together with batteries and a memory card it tips the scales at ~2 lbs (900g), a good competitive number especially considering the enjoyable view. Beyond physical elements, the DSLR-A900's got plenty of brains. To speed up throughput for pro sports and action use, Sony's employed dual "Bionz" image processors. Its two analog-to-digital engines swallow large chunks of information, shoving up to ~5 frames per second into a fast memory card-quite bold capacity considering those big RAW files. With its image quality, handling ease, robust construction, and brilliant viewfinder, the DSLR-A900 should prove a serious tool for professionals and advanced consumers. The benefits of 'full frame' are plentiful; better dynamic range, more natural skin rendition, a cushy viewing experience and superior capacity to blur backgrounds. Super wide angle zooms start at focal lengths more befitting professional instruments, and are awash upon the secondhand market. leaf Wed, 24 Jun 2009 06:06:43 -0700 D700 http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=5

by: leaf

Description: The Nikon D700 SLR Digital Camera brings professional imaging with a full frame image sensor to a lightweight yet durable camera body. It features the exclusive 12.1 Megapixel FX-format CMOS sensor, measuring 23.9 x 36mm, which is nearly identical to the size of a 35mm film frame - thereby eliminating any significant crop factor or focal length multiplier. Images taken with the D700 exhibit exceptional overall quality, broad tonal range and depth, along with extremely low-noise throughout its expansive ISO range of 200 to 6400. Nikon's exclusive EXPEED Image Processing System is central to driving the speed and processing power needed for many of the camera's features; such as the 51-point auto focus system and speedy 5 fps frame advance, and the camera incorporates many of the features that have made point-and-shoot digital cameras so popular - such as Live View, Auto ISO, and in-camera image enhancement. The D700 has been designed with refined ergonomics and usability and a streamlined, aesthetically pleasing layout so photographers can take pictures with greater accuracy and comfort and with less concern about fatigue. The camera's bright viewfinder provides virtually 100 percent coverage for accurate framing, while an ultra-high definition, 920,000-dot VGA LCD screen on the rear of the camera displays images with vivid color and clarity. The 170-degree wide viewing angle makes composing shots using the LCD screen in LiveView mode easy, and the camera also features a unique Virtual Horizon digital level sensor that indicates the camera's alignment relative to the true horizon on the rear LCD screen or in the viewfinder. The cameras impressive durability means that it can be used under the most demanding conditions. The exterior of the D700 is crafted of magnesium alloy and the camera's shutter mechanism is tested to 150,000 release cycles. Furthermore, the comprehensive array of rubber gaskets and seals protect vulnerable entry points from dust and moisture. If for some reason dust were to make its way into the camera (most probably when changing lenses), the Image Sensor Cleaning function employs piezoelectric elements to generate vibrations at four specific frequencies to optimize dust removal. leaf Wed, 24 Jun 2009 06:01:09 -0700 D300 http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=4

by: leaf

Description: Precision engineered to deliver new professional-level functionality, performance and reliability, the Nikon D300 combines innovative Nikon technologies with advanced new features to optimize all aspects of camera performance and form the ideal blend of Nikon DX-format performance. leaf Wed, 24 Jun 2009 05:57:54 -0700 EOS 5D http://www.microstockgroup.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=3

by: leaf

Description: Professional photographers, advanced photo hobbyists and anyone who yearns for the wide-angle shooting ability of a 35mm full-sized sensor are going to fall in love with the 12.8 megapixel EOS 5D.
