Most of the people that have bought directly from me have contacted me and bypassed the online shopping system. So I'm wondering if continuing to invest in a shopping system like Photoshelter is worth it instead of just going with an SEO optimized Wordpress setup or standard gallery website.
What's been your experience?

A little of both. Mostly I'd say people just use the shopping system. I usually encourage it too. I get custom requests as well that I do outside the cart.

How do you deliver the large files if there is no purchase & download area?
(I don't have a store btw, but I do use Smugmug for client proofing and guess I could upload a full size that could be downloaded if I had to).

Same here, everyone contacted me directly.

FTP site or give them access to the file on your web server.

The whole point of doing stock for me is not having to deal with customers directly. So - if I 'll ever set up my own site - I'll do everything possible to avoid them contacting me, even at the cost of losing some sales.
