I've never had anything even close to a S&OD sale that netted me $82.92, on SS or any other site, until today.  It's a shot of my small, experimental pallet vegetable garden:  http://www.shutterstock.com/pic.mhtml?id=146876147 .  I hope it's not gonna turn out to be a mistake or a refund situation.

Congrats! I didnt believe these SODs existed until I got 80 dollars for a simple easter egg image that had never been downloaded before on istock.

They are not a myth, they exist.

All sorts of images get licensed under these special deals - I think $112 was my highest to date. I don't think I've ever had a refund on Shutterstock - not once since 2004.

Ill be sending that quote to my friends, if you dont mind. That is a huge plus for Shutterstock and all the other agencies that dont do clawbacks.

What does SOD stand for? I see it mentioned and thought it might be shoot on demand but it seems it is not. My apologies if this is obvious, I'm not on SS.

I hope not! For you and for me ;)
I got an unexpected $79.69 SOD some days ago too.
All the previous and the successive one were no more than $45

Single & Other Dowloads

It is the name of the licence. Probably the usage of the image is tailormade.

I don't mind at all.

And as far as other agencies, I've had refunds/reversals/clawbacks from just about everyone else: iStock, Alamy, 123rf, dreamstime, Veer.

And for Shutterstock, while I was exclusive at iStock they had some sort of settlement with a buyer who should have purchased extended licenses but didn't. I received the $28 - they notified me by e-mail (I didn't have to ask) AND they made some sort of special arrangement to lower the $75 minimum payout amount for that payment to be made to me with the next month's payouts.

Yup. By his own account of how many he sells I know that I sell more than he does, but my three-figure SODs come round about as frequently as my birthday (and it does feel a bit like a birthday when they turn up. Please send me some more SS!).

I had my first large SOD this month too, and for an image that hadn't sold more than a few times before at the usual rate. It was quite the happy surprise!

From the reports of others, it seems this trend may be increasing. We can all hope!

Don't go to SS they only pay 25c a download. If we tell them about SOD more competition will join. No SOD I only get 25c subs. Warning stay away from SS.

You are OPT IN for sensitive use license?

why i ask...  have tens of thousands of downloads on SS but NOT EVEN ONE big $ sale. My personal best ''Single &other '' sale was a strange $27.9

If you dont opt in for sensitive use you dont get any SODs. Not large and not small.

If you get small SODs you are opted in for sensitive use.

Nope, SOD and sensitive use are two different things. I'm selling SODs even I have option out for sensitive use.

I didnt know that.

I guess the big SODs are only for sensitive use then.

thanks

Large SODs are more likely just licensed by larger companies (ad agencies, for example) with larger clients and larger campaigns. I can't imagine any of my silly illustrations being for "sensitive use," but I've gotten a few large SODs.

As I understand it, the "sensitive use" is more than just sensitive use, but is mainly the large $ SOD sales. I am opted out because of a few kid and other people pics (Why SS doesn't allow opt out on a model or even per image basis is beyond me). They have requested I allow it for a few images (turn on for the whole port 'til it is dled). which I have done I think 3 times. One resulted in a big sale. All were for images that had nothing to do with sensitive uses. I still get SOD sales w/o opting in, but they tend to be single digit or low double digit sales.

I probably should just deactivate those images that I don't agree to "sensitive" use for and then turn on my port.

SS if you are reading, allow sensitive use opt-out based on model releases or per image or something similar.

totally agree with that!

I also agree ... I really would like to allow sensitive use for my images without models ... and those with models but without visible face.

Totally agree.... I'm opted OUT because of some baby and mother and baby images. Hope somebody from SS will read this ( and i know they do) and do something.

I think you would get a response if you opened a dedicated thread about it.
