This is horrendous. My entire SS port for free from thieves. What on earth are SS doing with their security giving Jpeg previews away ?

For anyone else who wants to know how, since Shutterstock support probably won't tell you, here's how to disable your images altogether.
From your dashboard, go to the drop down under your name in the upper right corner of the page, and select "account settings"
On the right side, about half way down on that page, will be buttons to opt out of selling extended license, etc.
Opt out of image sales. Save settings. (big red button, bottom left) You're done.
This doesn't delete your images, so you can opt back in, if Shutterstock gets their s*** together.

Seems like shutting the door after the horse has bolted though. They already have all our images, all this will do is cut off our earnings completely at SS.

yes they probably have all our images! so much for picture-scout and agencies telling us they do everything in their power to find these freebie places. its a joke, theyre taking the piss!

If all their images are withdrawn, Shutterstock's contract with Facebook will be void, and they'll suffer financially for it. Probably won't help us, but it will hurt them.

I'm every day closer to get a regular job and abandon the stock altogether.
When that happens, I'll build a site and give away all my 20.000+ images for free in high-resolution only asking for a donation and I'll advertise the heck out of it.
One thing is certain, one major tourist destination will be "nuclear bombed" for the agencies.

OVH? Reportedly, they are number one in hosting spammers and they'll host whoever they please.

Had a quick look on this thief's site. Found lots of my images being offered for free there. Probably my entire SS portfolio is stolen. I really am furious. Like you all, I also have worked hard to produce these image. Not to mention the expenses for each of the photo shoots. Any suggestions as to what we can do? I would like to wipe them off the internet if possible. Their hosting provider as well.

I have sent an email to both shutterstock and ovh, requesting that ss fix their problem immediately, and requesting ovh shut the site down immediately for massive copyright infringement. Hopefully it actually does some good.

Class action lawsuit?
Class action DOS. If every contributor affected by these dirtbags (hundreds of thousands?) accessed the site say two or three times a day...a perfectly legal way to hack the hackers. I highly doubt their hosting plan allows for that kind of bandwidth. Just don't click on any ad links though.

My entire library is up there as well, and I just joined shutterstock two weeks ago. What .? Can we hold shutterstock accountable for this hack? Photos are not my main focus - but I'm upset enough to make the jump from 'observer' to participant in this forum. Just filled out a complaint on shutterstock.

It seems as if the the photos on foundstock.com was deleted or blocked. BUT now it is possible to download
all photos without water sign about a the side www.shutterget.com (http://www.shutterget.com). You need only the link to the photo
from shutterstock (thumbnail) and you get the photo in high resolution ! What a f... !!!

Our photos are not on that site, they are downloaded on request straight from Shutterstock. That's why you have to put in the link to get the picture. That means everything on SS is available free from these crooks.

I don't know where they are, but they get a 1,000 pixel on the long edge image, which isn't the "high res" image they promise, but still is outrageous to make available.
ShutterGet downloader worked for me too (tested with a couple of my own images) - they are named foundstock_(SS image number).jpg same as those from earlier today - so the same tool/engine/hack is behind both sites

Something is different today. I get an app downloader page, instead of one where I can search for my images. Maybe they have been stopped?

For anyone else who wants to know how, since Shutterstock support probably won't tell you, here's how to disable your images altogether.
From your dashboard, go to the drop down under your name in the upper right corner of the page, and select "account settings"
On the right side, about half way down on that page, will be buttons to opt out of selling extended license, etc.
Opt out of image sales. Save settings. (big red button, bottom left) You're done.
This doesn't delete your images, so you can opt back in, if Shutterstock gets their s*** together.
This is something to consider!! Imagine if we all did this at the same time? SS would NOTICE.

There's the rub - getting a large number of contributors to agree on any action.
I wouldn't disable my portfolio until they took action, but I would consider disabling it for a couple of weekdays just to get their attention. I probably wouldn't want to do it until later in December though as this is a very busy time of year and I don't want to walk away from the sales during such a key month.
The concerns/issues would be:
1) getting a substantial number of images opted out (let's say at least 40 million and who cares if the replicator and marijuana portfolios stay up). I'd rate the odds of this happening as so close to zero as to be zero.
2) worry about retaliation from SS (closing our accounts)
3) SS could very easily eliminate the ability to disable account contents by changing the software and then we lose a useful feature. Given the actual losses from this scammy site, is this worth the risk?
No legitimate business will use these stolen property sites because there's no license and they wouldn't want the legal risk.
The images are small (certainly good for blogs) and easily stolen elsewhere if you don't care about legality (from any web site that's used an image already) so I don't see the actual damage (versus potential) as being all that great.
I did get the standard "we take this very seriously" email back from SS compliance and they acknowledge that they know about the site. The only other avenue I can think of to get attention to this issue is to try and get the financial analysts who watch SS as a public company to be concerned - that it might impact their future profitability if no one pays because sites offer stolen stuff for free. I think that it's unlikely they'd view this as a big threat because the big bucks are business customers who won't be buying from thieves.

There was a deal with Microsoft, but the big stink was over the deal with Google where there was no opt out and a one time minimal payment for eternal giveaways. I removed all but 100 images from iStock over that - arguably making no difference to anyone but me as Getty has lumbered on its march to mess up its business undeterred - so I know all about deleting thousands of images. That's why I'm not doing it again, at least not without a very big issue at stake

I skimmed through this thread pretty fast so apologies if someone already mentioned this but we should be reporting them to Google too rather than relying on the corrupt host or SS to take them down. AdSesnse does NOT mess around and if you get your account cutoff for shady business it should be hard for them to get it running again on the same domain.
Of course they will pop up with a new one but when it comes to playing whack-a-mole with these thieves Google may be our best bet when it come to bulk complaints. If you take away their monetization they have no reason to be giving our files away.
Edit: I just went and reported the site through the ad-sense banner at the bottom to google, only took about 3 minutes I'd encourage others to do this too. If you hover over the the ad banner at the bottom specifically the play button icon the word "AdChoices" will appear in gray.
Click that (Make sure NOT to click outside in the actual ad!) and it will take you to the google site to a page where you can "Leave feedback on the website or ad you just saw" scroll close to the bottom for this option and chose website.
You can then check "The page violates AdSense program policies in other ways" and "This page is distributing someone eles's copyrighted material, possibly without permission."
There is also a place to leave a comment with details and optionally your email.

Facebook and Shutterstock have not been able to keep up with these people, twice reported, twice stopped, up again. Shutterstock should employ them, they seem to have less downtime than them.

Class action DOS. If every contributor affected by these dirtbags (hundreds of thousands?) accessed the site say two or three times a day...a perfectly legal way to hack the hackers. I highly doubt their hosting plan allows for that kind of bandwidth. Just don't click on any ad links though.
Or better yet block those ads.

You win the day in the campaign against fraud!. If everyone reported these free and pirate sites directly to Google ASAP rather than wait for the IT "teams" form these sites who "take your data security seriously" to actually do something it might just have a much more immediate effect. Great idea. Need to report every single one of them and if everyone does their part this can be accomplished quite quickly.

No, but the best selling agency that makes me the most money I would be slashing my income just because of a hasty decision. Buyers use my images, the thieves might not care if I exist, or I could use one sale a month. I wouldn't close my best income over some turds who offer 1000 pixel images. Buyers will not risk using stolen images, the liability is too much risk. People who don't buy just steal these. My opinion is I'm not losing money.
SS is working to block them, it's not like they are ignoring us or the problem. Some things take time, patience and consideration for the long term.

But SS might not be as big of an income-producing site for some as it is for you. Hence the decision to close their account would not be an overreaction or hasty. From what I understand, this problem is not new. How is it that contributors accounts can be closed virtually instantaneously if they so choose, but a pipeline into our assets takes time and patience? I am pretty sure the solution has to do with code. It should take months to close a hole? My guess is that the solution will somehow disrupt their money-making, which is why it is taking so long.

What did you do to take a stand then? I dont think you have ever deleted one image? You rant on a forum, you send emails to Jon. Sorry, but I have never seen you taken a real stand for as long as I am in Microstock since 2012. And I apologise if I've missed something.
I took a stand with Dollar Club, I wrote to every possible government body and organisation in the EU who would deal with copyright and artist rights and I got my account closed as a result.
I closed my Istock account when the Google thing happened,
I deleted 95% of my portfolio when Deposit started selling our images for 3% royalty.
I closed my Phanter account when they started messing about.
I stopped uploading to all other agencies, trying to figure out what to do with my images.
My earnings are down from 1000 a month to 300 a month because of this. And I need money badly with young twins in Ireland, its costly to maintain them.
I actually turned down a job in Ireland working for Getty on their sales team when they approached me. Never will I work for crooks like them.

As for hack sites, take one down, two will pop up.
And I think the problem is entirely with SS not securing their images. The problem is that the 1000px images do not have a watermark when sitting on their server. The watermark is generated when the preview is requested. Thats how/why every contributor has their own unique watermark. These hack sites just pull the image from the server before the watermark is generated. These images on the server should be better protected, something needs to be done by SS to prevent an unwatermarked image to be pulled from their server.

Not sure if you are talking to me or rinderart, but for now I have taken my images offline from SS until they fix their code. If they don't, I will close my account. This problem isn't new, they have had plenty of time to deal with it. I am only at two sites now, SS being one. Free images being advertised (by people posting links even on this forum!) means cutting into the decent sales I have on the other site too. And yes, it's like playing whack-a-mole with thieves, but I will take action with my portfolios as I see fit. Sales have dropped drastically at SS (it is no wonder) so it's not like my taking action is hurting my sales any more than they have already been hurt. I don't really care whether you or anyone here approves of my business, it is my decision. Since I have started in micro in 2005, I have taken a lot of stands, but I never do it because I think I am going to cripple one of these million-dollar companies... I am a nobody to them. I do it for my own peace of mind.

Let's not get sidetracked. This is all about how indifferently Shutterstock deals with the pest sites that steal our work. Don't be fooled, don't explain on Shutterstock's behalf. That is called Stockholm syndrome.
There are no degrees on stealing. If someone breaks into your house and steals your computer, are you happy they did not steal all your electronics and valuables? Are you happy that they stole only little but not a lot? Will you not report this, because it was only a little bit of thieving?
If somebody steals a small image or large image, it is stealing plain and simple. We must maintain ZERO TOLERANCE on stealing!

I hope you didn't mean that for me, I'm always standing up for our rights and when agencies try to cut us, cheat on our share or lower earnings, I'm the last one to defend them. This is a problem that the agency didn't create and that they would like to end, as much as us. Accusing them or doing nothing is kind of odd. Every free image stolen comes from their pockets, 80% more then ours. And it's ever picture, not just maybe one of mine. I don't know that one image has been stolen by any of these sites, why should I close my account? Keep in mine the agency doesn't care or notice and it only hurts me to stop selling on SS.
I've already dropped many others because of policies I don't agree with or what I felt was treating us unfairly.

Not sure if you are talking to me or rinderart, but for now I have taken my images offline from SS until they fix their code. If they don't, I will close my account. This problem isn't new, they have had plenty of time to deal with it. I am only at two sites now, SS being one. Free images being advertised (by people posting links even on this forum!) means cutting into the decent sales I have on the other site too. And yes, it's like playing whack-a-mole with thieves, but I will take action with my portfolios as I see fit. Sales have dropped drastically at SS (it is no wonder) so it's not like my taking action is hurting my sales any more than they have already been hurt. I don't really care whether you or anyone here approves of my business, it is my decision. Since I have started in micro in 2005, I have taken a lot of stands, but I never do it because I think I am going to cripple one of these million-dollar companies... I am a nobody to them. I do it for my own peace of mind.
Let me try a different way of my view. I don't see how cutting my income in half, just because someone might give away one of my images, is a better way to work and earn. I also don't see any direct effect from these free sites, anywhere. You and some others are saying, just because there's a threat that someone could steal a small image, you'll shut down your account? What about the people who steal from all the other agencies, will you close all of them?
Since you say you are only on two and hint that the other is nearly as good or better than SS, please tell me. I think that's what I need. I could use a second good agency as FT is 1/3rd of SS.
That's not a good point, you should speak your voice and take necessary actions whenever needed.

That sounds like a good plan. Everyone does what is right for themselves.
That's the way I see it too Cathy, we all decide for ourselves. I don't think any protest, dropping, closing or not uploading, is noticed by any of them. Writing messages on forums posting on FB or tweets and exposing the issues will get more noticed and maybe warn people of what's going on.

On Alamy, which can be considered traditional/midstock, RM never gave me a better sale value average than RF. And I sell there hundreds of images per year.
I do not see a motive to sell RM anymore, especially when agencies don't care about chasing infringements.

That's disgusting, I suspect SS has banned talk of this and deleted threads because they are well aware of gaping holes in their systems and are afraid of lawsuits, same reason the two other main sites don't like to respond to questions regarding fraud and theft.
We trust these companies with out video and photo content and I am pretty sure that in law they are liable if they lose it or mishandle it and it gets stolen. A class action lawsuit could very well happen and they are being super cautious about covering their behinds I think. They are also super greedy and just can't resist doing these deals with affiliates and partners and whatnot and each one of those sites could have security holes in their systems.
Everyone says we take your data security seriously, so did Target, Equifax, many others and of course that department of national defense that left a whole database sitting on AWS with no password.
A class action lawsuit would cost money and admissible evidence needs to be gathered but a tip to as many of the tech media as possible by as many of us possible to let them know what's going on might generate some investigation and coverage, techcrunch, bleepingcomputer, thehackernews, and many more. My images of course, more than you can shake a stick at, the last one ironically was at Shutterstock :). I do a trawl of the internet about once a year, drives you mad if you can't let it go for a while.
This is not about my images though, it's about our images and if we all notify Shutterstock every time we see another site pop up we have more chance of something being done don't you think?

Yes put pressure on, always. If it is not priority for them to help protect the work you entrusted with them, make it their priority.

I just went over and looked at Arcangel. Talk about all "vroom" and no "zoom"!
The site is very pretty, with lots of cute presentation tricks that make it a pain in the ass to find any useful information in. It's like swimming in loose pages. The contributor information is presented as a catalogue with pages to flip. You can't search for key phrases to get to what you want to know. Everything has to load, Flash has to be activated, it's a mess. The "help desk" link is maximum 404.
If they spend this much bandwidth and coding on promoting themselves to contributors (who don't need to be sold to, since we are actively looking for outlets) the buyer end must be hellish.
I wouldn't expect to sell much there.

Nicely done. Clearly you invest a lot of time and effort into each image.
I got in touch with the Director of Arcangel Michael Mascaro about a year ago when I had 174 images and he had the following advice:
Your email regarding sales was forwarded to me. I've looked over your images and it's a great start to a portfolio but 174 images is only a start (especially when you consider that 50 images is the absolute minimum we accept as a first submission). Submit regularly, add the correct location details to your images and ensure you have uploaded the necessary model/property releases and the sales will
start to come in.
A year has passed and since 400+ accepted images...still waiting..

I looked at Trevellion but I find that my style suits Arcangel more since i like producing artsy dark imagery. Trevellion seems to be more like Stocksy (if I'm not mistaken). Also, quite difficult to get in.
Angela: Did you know that within Arcangel you have the option to submit to a non-exclusive gallery? It's called "NX". So you could submit to Arcangel and other Rights-Managed galleries. I've started doing that because I can't wait forever to get earn.

You can deactivate your port. Then, if/when Shutterstock fixes this, you can turn it back on. You will be stopping your images from being stolen, but you will not sell images, either. Which in most cases is no great loss because sales at shutterstock are in the toilet anyway. Why would anybody buy when they can get them for free.

How amazing if any contributor do anything wrong or copyright even with one image, then their portfolio is immediately banned.
And if ss do same thing even after knowing the fact its hurting contributors, no immediate action is being carried out.

With the logo on it? Watermark. What do you want then to do, go turn off the internet? Anything on anyplace can be copied with the watermark on it, that's the protection. SS isn't the only one and turning off your collection doesn't stop anything, doesn't hurt the theifs, doesn't bother SS, it only hurts yourself. Next month the same people will complain how income is down. You can't make money unless your work is for sale.
I wish there was a way to stop the theives. I liked the idea of writing to their host and isp becasuse legal isn't going to stop them where they are. The laws can't be enforced in some countries, maybe the country is getting paid to look the other way.

Their way of conducting business is very questionable. It's not only that they make millions, but what kind of "business" allows continuous stealing?
For me there were numerous reasons to deactivate my images. It's sickening to see all my work free to steal. When SS doesn't care about image security, we will have to make our own decisions.
I'm selling my work via other agencies, and I don't want to compete against myself by offering them free on SS. That scenario would be just crazy.

Thanks for the heads up. I will see if I can delete those sets. And I hope SS has gotten it sorted. I don't make much from them, but it all helps. EDIT: I have unpublished my sets.

I am also only seeing the word "down" when I go to the thief site. They must be busy getting a new url...i am sure they will pop up somewhere else. Until SS says they have fixed their code, it doesn't really matter because it will just continue happening. 😡

Hardly, people who're not willing to shell out some bucks for an image that someone spent effort on are not going to spend bucks on them in the future
Plus SS just needs to be vigilant. One site means that there is already an image leak.

SS is not on a downhill slope, my income keeps growing. The thieves are mostly beggars who wouldn't buy anything anyways. Real business and customers will not steal our work and would fear what happened if they get caught. Bad for legitimate business and websites. Yes exposure pays nothing.
You told us removed your best selling pictures, you say stopped uploading long ago, you have only a little over 2000 images on SS but you keep saying they caused the problem. Don't your own actions, cutting your own income count into that? Or are you just looking for a way to blame them when you caused most of the problem. Everybody knows you need to upload to keep active and you took away your best selling. Of course your sales will be down.
Pirates aren't the problem, you and your bad attitude are.

A stock agency that openly allows hacking and stealing is not a reputable business or a secure website.

Agreeing Jim! 110% and you seem to know lots about pirates and theft!! I dont need SS but you do! thats the difference here.
You're right for me too, SS is my biggest earner, I wouldn't remove my files and stop uploading to spite my own earnings. Since you do so much in trads and RM I don't know why you have any Micro at all. If we're all so terrible and FT and SS are just down the dumps, why don't you leave?
Come on why should I leave? isnt it better to just leave a port as it is and earn. The port I have in micro is a micro port and completely different from my port at the boutique agencies.
Yes same as everybody else I complain about earnings, just something to rant about isnt it.

yes thank you, I was just gong to ask you what I should do instead since you laugh at micro hahaha, we're all stupid, but you know better. You didn't leave your port as it is, you say you removed your best pictures and stopped uploading. Then you complain about dropping sales. Isn't that a self defeating creation of your own unhappiness.

Jim! I appreciate what youre saying but the thing is the overall majority not only here but everywhere complain over lack of exposure and lack of sales of new uploads. I know a guy way up in the SS admin and he tells me thats the way it is and will be for a long time. I cant see any point in uploading commercial value images under those conditions.
Reason I remove images is because I think they are better suited in the more traditional agencies.
I know you and you also have long experience and know that nothing last forever. Theres been many great years in micro-stock and the first three/four years we were earning bundles but like everything it slows down to lets say " normal".
Anyway the big culprit in all stock-photography isnt SS but Getty. They still after all these years seem to set some sort of a trend in how to con contributors to upload for minimal returns. If an agency output can't match your input then whats the point? working on short term profit thinking isnt exactly my thing.
