It took me a little over 7 months.  SS is now my #1 earner, way ahead of IS.

If forwardcom has the numbers right (and if I do?) that's 264 photos online at 8% to sell 2000 subscription downloads at 25c each. That would be minimum payments and the Max. number of photos necessary.

Getting 264 photos uploaded and accepted in three months is quite a feat, especially if someone assumes that it would take an average of 24.3 downloads a day, and in the beginning, you would have less downloads, because on day one, the portfolio is starting at zero.

So by the end, to make an average of, to be simple, 25 downloads a day, the portfolio would have to be selling about 75 downloads a day, to compensate for the start up and lower number of photos in the beginning.

If someone has 250 photos, selling at 25 per day, that's $187 a month. Minimum!

For someone to make $100 a month, which is a nice goal, you would only need to have 400 downloads a month, which is only 13 or 14 a day. If the 10% figures are accurate... 140 photos! That's easy.  ;D

Or did someone mean 10% of 4000 photos, per month, which is not so easy! Neither is 8% of 2600 photos in only three months.

About 6 weeks.  I sold 1500 in first month and didn't reach that figure again for 6 months inspite of uploading loads more images.

well, not doubting what anyone writes here,
i still like to know how much time any of you take to produce those stock photos.
Racephoto, your calculations are very informative,
which strengthens my need to ask even more,
like... how many hours a day are you ppl assigning yourself to photographing these shots.
because in order to UL that amount, you also have to photograph that amount of stock photo-acceptable shots.

this is a question no one on this forum has volunteered to inform me about.
i have to know because i am a working photographer and is contemplating that perharps stock photo would be a good branch out to my working life, to reduce the hours and days i work on photographic assignments.
but this sounds like it means more hours and days rather than what i am already putting in.
so looks like no extra vacation while having my stock photos make the money for me .
plus, adapting my creative style to one of stock photography, again a lot of readjustment.

Racephoto, won't you agree? :-\

Well I could be misunderstanding what, for example, 10% means? I'm assuming that it means 10% of the photos sell. It doesn't include how many sales, which is where I just divided the $500 by 82 days and came up with some numbers.

Some people may have a portfolio already shot and all they have to do is work every day at keywording and uploading.

I'm only shooting weekends and maybe when I get an idea. I figure I'll hit $500 about March of 2015.  ;) Maybe that's a little pessimistic, and sarcastic, but the point is, and you are correct, some people have more time and resources and create more images per day, than someone else (who has three jobs outside of photography, and shoots sports in the Summer) might in a week.

Some people have a better feel for what stock is and what will sell, and are good at producing stock worthy images. It would be foolish for me to just say, 2500 images and you'll have X dollars a month, because 500 good stock photos, vs 2500 barely stock images, the person with 500 will sell more and make more.

In my little guide that I'm writing for myself, I have included the often repeated generalization, which I think is pretty good advise. If someone has the same images up on multiple sites, even if it's just the big six, they should average about $1 per photo, per month.

That doesn't mens that every photo will sell, and many may never sell. But others will sell over and over again, which makes for the average.

Starting from scratch, means shooting, learning stock, uploading, having rejections and it's not easy to build a big portfolio in three months.

I'm not making any claims, nor am I supporting anything that can't be substantiated. I'm just trying to make sense of the number of people who say they made $500 in under three months, which is pretty amazing. Real simple that means 2000 downloads or 22 downloads a day!  ;D

You make $2000+/- per month on SS? That's 6600 DLs, and sure doesn't gibe with what you wrote here.

With SS I really do not think it matters how big your portfolio is, or how good are your keywords. The only way I get sales is to continue to contribute new stuff.

Although if you search "white van" my white van is now in the top 10 searches so that probably helps.

I've been uploading for 15 months and I still have $100 to go.  :(

At my current pace, I'll make $500 faster, walking around picking up pennies off the ground, faster than I'll make $500 on stock photography.  ;D

Based on the last three months sales and my stock "work ethic" (or lack of one) my latest revised estimate is I'll make $500 on stock about July 2010. That's if I never take another photo or upload anything new.  :P

Keep in mind that stock is interesting and a challenge and 5th or 6th on the list of things I do for income, and third on the list of photographic income sources.

Still if someone like myself can get 25 new photos uploaded a month, that's 300 potential pictures, up working by the end of the year. That's only six photos a week on average.

Even if my photos are weak, after a year, that's still over $100 income a month, which will eventually buy a nice new 300mm L telephoto lens, for what I love shooting most.

Repeatedly, people who just started and have talent have proven that if one invests the time, and is willing to learn what's marketable, they will make a decent side income from stock photography. Some people go way beyond that and work full time at stock. My compliments to all of you. That's not me.

I'm a hobby stock shooter and it's great entertainment and an interesting challenge, when I have the free time.

Today I passed the 1000 dl barrier with this vector:

It took me about 1.5 months and if the trend continues I'll get there in about a month.

Congratulations on that... well it gets slowly here too... I was accepted in mid-March and had 80dl in March, and since today I had just 60dl for this month... With this tempo I'm not sure how long will it take me to reach 500usd... I guess a long long time  ::)

Right now I spend more cash on gas than I earn.   If you guys take off you costs from your monthly earnings. How much you get?

It doesnt matter really, but since everyone seems so obsessed with earnings, you should be equal obsessed with costs :)

it helps provide the 15-20 weeks of travel i do every year.  i'd done RM stock since the 70's and started selling digital images in the early 90s - those sources have decreased dramatically and MS is starting to replace them for me.

it took me 6 mo to break $500 on SS going from 300 - 800 images in my portfolio.  i'll be over 1000 in the next day or so.

my  rate is much lower than $1/image/mo, which i knew going in, since my areas of interest are travel and nature, and i rarely have model releases.
